A frequency domain linearized unsteady aerodynamic analysis is presented for three-dimensional unsteady vortical flows around a cascade of loaded airfoils. The analysis fully accounts for the distortion of the impinging vortical disturbances by the mean flow. The entire unsteady flow field is calculated in response to upstream three-dimensional harmonic disturbances. Numerical results are presented for two standard cascade configurations representing turbine and compressor bladings for a reduced frequency range from 0.1 to 5. Results show that the upstream gust conditions and blade sweep strongly affect the unsteady blade response.

The unsteady flow field produced by a tandem cylinder system with the upstream cylinder yawed to the mean flow direction is investigated for upstream cylinder yaw angles from α = 60° to α = 90°. Multi-point fluctuating surface pressure and hotwire measurements were conducted at various spanwise positions on both the upstream and downstream cylinders. The results indicate that yawing the front cylinder to the mean flow direction causes the pressure and velocity spectra on the upstream and downstream cylinders to become more broadband than for a regular tandem cylinder system, and reduces the magnitude of the peak associated with the vortex-shedding. However, span-wise correlation and coherence measurements indicate that the vortex-shedding is still present and was being obscured by the enhanced three-dimensionality that the upstream yawed cylinder caused and was still present and correlated from front to back, at least for the larger yaw angles investigated. When the cylinder was yawed to α = 60°, the pressure fluctuations became extremely broadband and exhibited shorter spanwise correlation.

An experimental study of a steady, incompressible, three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer approaching separation is reported. The flow field external to the boundary layer was deflected laterally by turning vanes so that streamwise flow deceleration occurred simultaneous with cross-flow acceleration. At 21 stations profiles of the mean-velocity components and of the six Reynolds stresses were measured with single- and X-hot-wire probes, which were rotatable around their longitudinal axes. The calibration of the hot wires with respect to magnitude and direction of the velocity vector as well as the method of evaluating the Reynolds stresses from the measured data are described in a separate paper (Müller 1982, hereinafter referred to as II). At each measuring station the wall shear stress was inferred from a Preston-tube measurement as well as from a Clauser chart. With the measured profiles of the mean velocities and of the Reynolds stresses several assumptions used for turbulence modelling were checked for their validity in this flow. For example, eddy viscosities for both tangential directions and the corresponding mixing lengths as well as the ratio of resultant turbulent shear stress to turbulent kinetic energy were derived from the data.

Abstract In this paper, the results of computational studies on the unsteady flow features in three-dimensional empty cavities and cavities with a representative store are presented. Flow simulations with a turbulence model based on a hybrid method, which behaves as a standard Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model within the attached boundary layer and as a Large-Eddy Simulation LES sub-grid scale model in the rest of the flow (commonly known as Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES)) are used in this study. The time-mean flow study showed the presence of three-dimensional effects inside the cavities. The mean flowfield visualisation also clearly showed the presence of a pair of ‘tornado-like’ vortices in the upstream half of the cavity which merge to a single, large recirculation further downstream. Visualisation for the cavity-with-store case revealed that the mean flowfield was effectively divided into two halves with significant reduction of the spanwise flow across the cavity width. In the unsteady flow study, near-field acoustic spectra were computed for the empty cavity and cavity-with-store cases. Study of unsteady pressure spectra for the cavity-with-store case found the presence of many peaks and the corresponding mode frequencies were found to agree well with the Rossiter modes. The blockage effect of store and strut on the spanwise flow is thought to have reduced the interaction, and subsequent non-linear coupling, between the Rossiter modes. This may be the reason for the co-existence of multiple modes without the coupling among them.

An experimental investigation was conducted at selected locations in the wall region of a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer relaxing in a nominally zero external pressure gradient behind a transverse hump (in the form of a 30° swept, 5 ft chord, wing-type model) faired into the side wall of a low-speed wind tunnel. The boundary layer (approximately 3·5 in. thick near the first survey station, where the length Reynolds number was 5·5 × 106) had a maximum cross-flow velocity ratio of 0·145 and a maximum cross-flow angle of 21·9° close to the wall. The hot-wire data indicated that the apparent dimensionless velocity profiles in the viscous sublayer are universal and that the wall influence on the hot wire is negligible beyond y+= 5. The existence of wall similarity in the relaxing flow field was confirmed in the form of a log law based on the resultant mean velocity and resultant friction velocity (obtained from the measured skin friction).The smallest collateral region extended from the point nearest to the wall (y+≈ 1) up to y+= 9·7, corresponding to a resultant mean velocity ratio (local to free-stream) of 0·187. The unusual feature of these profiles was the presence of a narrow region of slightly decreasing cross-flow angle (1° or less) that extended from the point of maximum cross-flow angle down to the outer limit of the collateral region. A sublayer analysis of the flow field using the measured local transverse pressure gradient slightly overestimated the decrease in cross-flow angle. It is concluded that, in the absence of these gradients, the skewing of the flow could have been much more pronounced practically down to the wall (limited only by the resolution of the sensor), implying a near-wallnon-collateralflow field consistent with the equations of motion in the neighbourhood of the wall.The streamwise relaxation of the mean flow field based on the decay of the cross-flow angle was much faster in the inner layer than in the outer layer. Over the stream-wise distance covered, the mean flow in the inner layer and the wall shear-stress vector relaxed to a two-dimensional state in approximately 10 boundary-layer thicknesses whereas the relaxation of the turbulence was slower and was not complete over the same distance.

The present work introduces an analysis of the measurement and model effects that exist in monopile scour protection experiments with repeated small scale tests. The damage erosion is calculated using the three dimensional global damage number S3D and subarea damage number S3D,i. Results show that the standard deviation of the global damage number σ(S3D)=0.257 and is approximately 20% of the mean S3D, and the standard deviation of the subarea damage number σ(S3D,i)=0.42 which can be up to 33% of the mean S3D. The irreproducible maximum wave height, chaotic flow field and non-repeatable armour layer construction are regarded as the main reasons for the occurrence of strong model effects. The measurement effects are limited to σ(S3D)=0.039 and σ(S3D,i)=0.083, which are minor compared to the model effects.

AbstractPrevious work has shown that aspects of the evolution of large-scale structures, particularly in forced and transitional mixing layers and jets, can be described by linear and nonlinear stability theories. However, questions persist as to the choice of the basic (steady) flow field to perturb, and the extent to which disturbances in natural (unforced), initially turbulent jets may be modelled with the theory. For unforced jets, identification is made difficult by the lack of a phase reference that would permit a portion of the signal associated with the instability wave to be isolated from other, uncorrelated fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which pressure and velocity fluctuations in subsonic, turbulent round jets can be described aslinearperturbations to the mean flow field. The disturbances are expanded about the experimentally measured jet mean flow field, and evolved using linear parabolized stability equations (PSE) that account, in an approximate way, for the weakly non-parallel jet mean flow field. We utilize data from an extensive microphone array that measures pressure fluctuations just outside the jet shear layer to show that, up to an unknown initial disturbance spectrum, the phase, wavelength, and amplitude envelope of convecting wavepackets agree well with PSE solutions at frequencies and azimuthal wavenumbers that can be accurately measured with the array. We next apply the proper orthogonal decomposition to near-field velocity fluctuations measured with particle image velocimetry, and show that the structure of the most energetic modes is also similar to eigenfunctions from the linear theory. Importantly, the amplitudes of the modes inferred from the velocity fluctuations are in reasonable agreement with those identified from the microphone array. The results therefore suggest that, to predict, with reasonable accuracy, the evolution of the largest-scale structures that comprise the most energetic portion of the turbulent spectrum of natural jets, nonlinear effects need only be indirectly accounted for by considering perturbations to the mean turbulent flow field, while neglecting any non-zero frequency disturbance interactions.

The paper is concerned with the prediction and analysis of dynamic stall of flow past a pitching NACA0012 airfoil at 1 million Reynolds number based on the chord length of the airfoil and at reduced frequency of 0.25 in a three dimensional flow field. The turbulence in the flow field is resolved using large eddy simulations with the dynamic Smagorinsky model at the sub grid scale. The development of dynamic stall vortex, shedding and reattachment as predicted by the present study are discussed in detail. This study has shown that the downstroke phase of the pitching motion is strongly three dimensional and is highly complex, whereas the flow is practically two dimensional during the upstroke. The lift coefficient agrees well with the measurements during the upstroke. However, there are differences during the downstroke. The computed lift coefficient undergoes a sharp drop during the start of the downstroke as the convected leading edge vortex moves away from the airfoil surface. This is followed by a recovery of the lift coefficient with the formation of a secondary trailing edge vortex. While these dynamics are clearly reflected in the predicted lift coefficient, the experimental evolution of lift during the downstroke maintains a fairly smooth and monotonic decrease in the lift coefficient with no lift recovery. The simulations also show that the reattachment process of the stalled airfoil is completed before the start of the upstroke in the subsequent cycle due to the high reduced frequency of the pitching cycle.

This paper presents results obtained from a combined experimental and computational study of the flow field over a multi-element aerofoil with and without an advanced slat. Detailed measurements of the mean flow and turbulent quantities over a multi-element aerofoil model in a wind tunnel have been carried out using stationary and flying hot-wire (FHW) probes. The model configuration which spans the test section 600mm×600mm, is made of three parts: 1) an advanced (heel-less) slat, 2) a NACA 4412 main aerofoil and 3) a NACA 4415 flap. The chord lengths of the elements were 38, 250 and 83 mm, respectively. The results were obtained at a chord Reynolds number of 3×105 and a free Mach number of less than 0.1. The variations in the flow field are explained with reference to three distinct flow field regimes: attached flow, intermittent separated flow, and separated flow. Initial comparative results are presented for the single main aerofoil and the main aerofoil with a nondeflected flap at angles of attacks of 5, 10, and 15 deg. This is followed by the results for the three-element aerofoil with emphasis on the slat performance at angles of attack α=10, 15, 20, and 25 deg. Results are discussed both for a nondeflected flap δf=0deg and a deflected flap δf=25deg. The measurements presented are combined with other related aerofoil measurements to explain the main interaction of the slat/main aerofoil and main aerofoil/flap both for nondeflected and deflected flap conditions. These results are linked to numerically calculated variations in lift and drag coefficients with angle of attack and flap deflection angle.
