Adiabatic transverse waves in a rotating fluid

Adiabatic disturbances propagating as transverse waves in an inviscid fluid rotating as a Rankine vortex about the axis of its cylindrical container are considered. The propagation of the first mode of the first two harmonic waves has been investigated. Relative to a fixed co-ordinate system, for each harmonic, there are three waves. Two waves are rotating in the same direction as the fluid, one faster and the other slower than the core of the fluid, and one wave rotates in the opposite direction. The latter is stable and relative to the core of the rotating fluid it is the fastest wave. Relative to the container, the other two waves are speeded up by rotation. However, relative to the rotating core, the angular velocity of the fast wave decreases when the fluid is speeded up, and when it is zero the wave breaks down. As the region of potential flow decreases the angular velocity of the slow wave increases and its amplitude decreases, and in the limit of vanishing potential flow, the wave rotates as fast as the fluid and its amplitude tends to zero.

Rotating stars are normally presumed to rotate about a unique axis. Would it be possible to determine whether or not that presumption is correct? This is a natural question to raise, particularly after the suggestion by T. Bai & P. Sturrock that the core of the sun rotates about an axis that is inclined to the axis of rotation of the envelope.A variation with radius of the direction of the rotation axis would modify the form of rotational splitting of oscillation eigenfrequencies. But so too does a variation with depth and latitude in the magnitude of the angular velocity. One type of variation can mimic the other, and so frequency information alone cannot differentiate between them. What is different, however, is the structure of the eigenfunctions. Therefore, in principle, one might hope to untangle the two phenomena using information about both the frequencies and the amplitudes of the oscillations.We consider a simple model of a star which is divided into two regions, each of which is rotating about a different fixed axis. We enquire whether there are any circumstances under which it might be possible to determine seismologically the separate orientations of the axes.

This paper is an investigation of the effect of a magnetic field on transverse waves in a perfectly conducting gas which is rotating like a Rankine vortex about the axis of a cylinder. The magnetic field is assumed to be in the axial direction. There are three waves: two waves are rotating in the same direction as the gas, one faster and the other slower than the core speed of the gas, and one wave rotates in the opposite direction.


A new set of solutions for adiabatic transverse waves occurring in an inviscid compressible fluid that is rotating as an unbounded Rankine vortex is presented. It is shown that for each harmonic m , where m ≽ 1, and a specified angular velocity of the core of the vortex there is an infinite spectrum of frequencies that relates to unstable waves. Results are presented for some waves for m = 1 and m = 2. The transverse waves represent a special case of a more general set, which relates to an axial wavenumber b . When b ≠ 0 for an m ≽ 1 there are, in general, two sets of helical waves, one rotating faster and one rotating slower than the vortex core. When b → 0 the former set vanishes and the latter reduces to the transverse waves presented here.

A theoretical study is made of the free periods of oscillation of an incompressible inviscid fluid, bounded by two rigid concentric spheres of radii a, b (a > b), and rotating with angular velocity Ω about a common diameter. An attempt is made to use the Longuet-Higgins solution of the Laplace tidal equation as the first term of an expansion in powers of the parameter ε = (a − b)/(a + b), of the solution to the full equations governing oscillations in a spherical shell. This leads to a singularity in the second-order terms at the two critical circles where the characteristic cones of the governing equation touch the shell boundaries.A boundary-layer type of argument is used to examine the apparent non-uniformity in the neighbourhood of these critical circles, and it is found that, in order to remove the singularity in the pressure, an integrable singularity in the velocity components must be introduced on the characteristic cone which touches the inner spherical boundary. Further integrable singularities are introduced by repeated reflexion at the shell boundaries, and so, even outside the critical region the velocity terms contain what may reasonably be described as a pathological term, generally of order ε½ compared to that found by Longuet-Higgins, periodic with wavelength O(εa) in the radial and latitudinal directions.Some consequences of this result are discussed.

‘The Final “Thank You”’ uses the work of Jacques Derrida and Friedrich Nietzsche to think the occasion of the 1995 rugby World Cup, hosted by the newly democratic South Africa. This paper deploys Nietzsche's Zarathustra to critique how a figure such as Nelson Mandela is understood as a ‘Superman’ or an ‘Overhuman’ in the moment of political transition. The philosophical focus of the paper, however, turns on the ‘thank yous’ exchanged by the white South African rugby captain, François Pienaar, and the black president at the event of the Springbok victory. It is the value, and the proximity and negation, of the ‘thank yous’ – the relation of one to the other – that constitutes the core of the article. 1

This article examines how female conditioning and sexual repression affect the woman’s sense of self, womanhood, identity and her place in society. It argues that the woman’s body is at the core of the many sites of gender struggles/ politics. Accordingly, the woman’s body must be decolonised for her to attain true emancipation. On the one hand, this study identifies the grave consequences of sexual repression, how it robs women of their freedom to choose whom to love or marry, the freedom to seek legal redress against sexual abuse and terror, and how it hinders their quest for self-determination. On the other hand, it underscores the need to give women sexual freedom that must be respected and enforced by law for the overall good of society.

Amlapitta is a very common disease caused by Vidagdha Pitta with features like Amlodgara, Tiktodgara, Hrit, Kantha Daha etc. Pathya recommended in Amlapitta are Yava, Godhuma, Purana Shali, Mudga Yusha, Lajasaktu etc. Apathya recommended in Amlapitta are Navanna, Avidugdha, Masha, Kulattha, Dadhi and etc. So this present review article throws light on Pathya (conducive) and Apathya (non conducive) in Amlapitta.

In this study we investigate how consumers in The Netherlands can be persuaded to adopt sustainable practices when purchasing, using and disposing of clothes. This study investigates the attitude-behavior gap for the sustainable choices for purchase, use and disposing of clothes. For each consumption phase we ran a two-step multiple regression. The findings showed that the importance of the factors vary in the three consumption phases. For purchasing and disposal decisions, the core motivator social motivation predicts sustainable practices best, while it has no role in the usage phase. The factor ability appeared to have a significant role in the disposal phase, but not in the other phases. Finally, the trigger appears to lower the consumers’ ability in the purchasing phase, while it enhances the core motivator social evaluation in the disposal phase.
