On the role of phonology and discourse in Francilian Frenchwh-questions

It is argued that in Francilian French, the dialect of French spoken in the Paris metropolitan area, in-situ and frontedwh-questions have the same answerhood conditions but vary with respect to their respective focus-set (Reinhart 2006). The difference between the two types of questions lies in the discourse status of their non-whportion. Whereas thewh-phrase is never discourse-given, the non-whportion may or may not be, depending on the discourse context. In Francilian French in-situwh-questions, the non-whportion must be discourse-given. As this language exhibits a strong requirement on sentence stress to be kept rightmost it cannot, in contrast with English, assign sentence stress to a frontedwh-phrase when the non-whportion is discourse-given and needs to be destressed. The only way to simultaneously destress discourse-given items and keep sentence stress rightmost is by aligning thewh-phrase with the right edge of the clause. Whereas in Hungarian prosody triggers movement (Szendrői 2003), in Francilian French, prosody prevents it from occurring. An Optimal Theoretic analysis in the spirit of much recent work on focus and givenness in declaratives (Samek-Lodovici 2005, Féry & Samek-Lodovici 2006) captures this phenomenon.

To date there has been little work that uses fine-grained interactional analyses of the in situ doing of leadership to make visible the role of non-human as well as human actants in this process. Using transcripts of naturally-occurring interaction as data, this study seeks to show how leadership is co-achieved by artefacts as an in-situ accomplishment. To do this we situate this study within recent work on distributed leadership and argue that it is not only distributed across human actors, but also across networks that include both human and non-human actors. Taking a discursive approach to leadership, we draw on Actor Network Theory and adopt a ventriloquial approach to sociomateriality as inspired by the Montreal School of organizational communication. Findings indicate that artefacts “do” leadership when a hybrid presence is made relevant to the interaction and when this presence provides authoritative grounds for influencing others to achieve the group’s goals.

1. Static pressure/volume curves have been determined for isolated frog lungs inflated with either air or saline. In both cases a hysteresis was present: the pressure required to produce unit change of volume being greater during inflation than deflation. 2. The pressure necessary for a given volume change was less for the saline-filled than the air-filled lungs. The difference between these curves is due to the surface tension at the air/lung interface. 3. Pressure/volume curves for air-filled lungs in situ were similar to curves for isolated lungs. However, a greater pressure was required for the same volume change during both inflation and deflation. 4. Compliance was calculated from different parts of air pressure/volume curves and gave values greater than those obtained using similar calculations for higher vertebrates. 5. These observations support other evidence for the presence of a surfactant in the lung lining of frogs in spite of the relatively large diameter of their ‘alveoli.’ The precise role of such a lining is uncertain and it is concluded that similar forces may be involved during the inflation and deflation of lungs of frogs and higher vertebrates in spite of differences in gross morphology.

For some time now, following the constitutional reform, the debate on the metropolitan city has been reignited. The topic has been at the centre of attention given that cohesion policies attribute to metropolitan cities a key role in planning and the constitutional reform seems to have given an answer to the spending review which wipes out the provinces and formally identifies the European Strategy under the form of a programmatic suitability of intermediate metropolitan level. This level should counterbalance the municipal egoism which provides a distorted interpretation of subsidiarity which has marked planning since the revising of Title V. Very few are acquainted with the implications and complexities of these entangled mechanisms which will fail if all conditions are not met whether they be effective, nominal or opportunity related. This explains why the term Metropolitan City is preferred to conurbation, agglomeration or metropolitan area. Metropolitan Area and City do not coincide the area is in a portion of territorial recognition which entails attractive and competitive factors, the city is identified as such only if within the territorial organization that explains why the creation of both must be ensured: the city must be promoted in terms of competition, with or without a demographic dimension, by fostering the shared political project and by creating relational and productive conditions to attract and offer services and what else is necessary. What makes the difference is how to build and what to build. The strategy and the role of the future Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria and Messina stem from two different regulations and from the attempt to integrate interregional functions through the project I put forward: the strategic corridor platform of the Straits area. The platform is a non-confined territorial dimension which encompasses the two metropolitan cities and shares relational functions and understandings with the vast territory. It fully exploits the possibilities and available reforms in order to organize and provide the territory with competitive and functional dimensions so as to compete in Europe and in the Mediterranean. The prototype-project, the first part of the study has already been published, fosters an idea of governance and urban system which will devise, through future cohesion policies and multidimensional strategies, a single strategic vision of the territory able to dialogue at a local and Euro-Mediterranean level with the new scale economies and meet the challenges of 2020-2050. Without going into detail, the project proposes and organizes the intangible functions of the Area (new assets and networking) so as to satisfy the demand for services and infrastructures physical and non-physical (functional and international indicator).

To evaluate the functional role of phosphocreatine (PCr) and creatine in muscle metabolism, these compounds were depleted by feeding rats the creatine analogue, beta-guanidinopropionate (beta-GPA, 2% of diet). Changes in phosphate metabolites and intracellular pH were monitored in gastrocnemius muscle in situ by phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) at 162 MHz using the surface coil technique. After 3 mo of feeding, 25 mumol/g of phosphorylated beta-GPA (beta-GPAP) had accumulated, and PCr, creatine, and ATP levels were reduced to 6, 17, and 56%, respectively, compared with muscles of control animals. In resting muscle, there was no measurable exchange of phosphate between beta-GPAP and ATP by the NMR saturation transfer method. During muscle stimulation at 1 and 5 Hz, the maximum net rate of beta-GPAP hydrolysis was 10% that of PCr in control muscles, so that after 150 s inorganic phosphate had increased to less than 50% of the level attained in control muscles. At both rates, peak twitch force declined toward a steady state more rapidly in beta-GPA-loaded muscles, but after 100 s force was either not different (1 Hz) or significantly greater (5 Hz) in the beta-GPA-fed animals. Intracellular pH initially decreased more rapidly during stimulation and recovered more rapidly afterward in the beta-GPA-loaded muscles compared with controls. This difference could be explained by the difference in expected proton consumption due to net PCr hydrolysis. However, despite buffering by PCr hydrolysis, pH ultimately decreased more in control muscle (6.1 vs. 6.3 for 5 Hz), indicating greater acid accumulation compared with beta-GPA-loaded muscles. In the superficial, predominantly fast-twitch glycolytic section of muscles clamp-frozen after 5-Hz stimulation for 150 s, lactate accumulation was twofold greater in controls. The results indicate that PCr is not essential for steady-state energy production but that the phosphate from PCr hydrolysis may be important for maximum activation of glycogenolysis and/or glycolysis.

Disjunctive questions are ambiguous: they can either be interpreted as polar questions (PolQs), as open disjunctive questions (OpenQs), or as closed alternative questions (ClosedQ). The goal of this paper is to show that the difference in interpretation between these questions can be derived via effects of focus marking directly. In doing so, the proposal brings out the striking parallel between the prosody of questions with foci/contrastive topics on the one hand and that of alternative questions on the other. Unlike previous approaches, this proposal does not rely on structural differences between AltQs and PolQs derived via ellipsis or syntactic movement. To show how this works out, an account of focus and contrastive topic marking in questions is put forward in which f-marking in questions determines what constitutes a possible answer by signaling what the speaker's QUD is like. By imposing a congruence condition between f-marked questions and their answers that requires answers to resolve the question itself as well as its signaled QUD, we predict the right answerhood conditions for disjunctive questions.


This study aims to identify the effect of Teachers’ Work Ethics (TWE) practice based on the teachers’ work ethics code outlined by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The research sample involved teachers who are teaching at one of the daily schools in the Kubang Pasu District whom were given intervention for a month. Questionnaire was used to seek the effect of intervention prescribed in the effort to develop TWE Model. The study employed inferential statistics of t-test paired sample to see the difference between pre test and post test result. The finding showed that there is an increase in ethics practice in terms of the right intention, good conduct, initiator of goodness, fulfilling promise and; disciplined and civilised. However, in the aspect of discipline and conduct, there is significant difference between pre and post test that is (p< 0.05). This difference shows that teachers focus more on practicing this particular aspect in their daily lives. Study findings give the implication that attitude, training and role of leaders are important in determining that this principle is implemented successfully.

The article presents the results of long-term field studies of methane in the upper part of permafrost for the different geomorphological levels of Central Yakutia. Patterns of spatial distribution of methane content across different landscapes were found. The highest concentrations of methane are found in alas deposits, the major role of methane in the conservation there goes to the moment of freezing the thermokarst lake draining. The difference in methane content in the sediments of the Late Pleistocene Ice Complex on the left and the right bank of the river Lena was identified. That is likely caused by the conditions of ice complex formation.

Abstract Background Residency program directors rely on an informal network of faculty mentors to provide guidance for residents. Faced with increasingly sophisticated competency-based evaluation systems and scrutiny of patient safety and resident well-being in today's environment, residency programs need more structured mechanisms for mentoring. Objective To clarify the role of resident advisors and mentors so that residents receive the right combination of direction and oversight to ensure their successful transition to the next phase of their careers. Methods The Duke Internal Medicine Residency Program undertook a formal assessment of the roles, responsibilities, and resource needs of its key faculty through a focus group made up of key faculty. A follow-up focus group of residents and chief residents was held to validate the results of the faculty group assessment. Results The distinction between advising and mentoring was our important discovery and is supported by literature that identifies that mentors and advisors differ in multiple ways. A mentor is often selected to match resources and expertise with a resident's needs or professional interests. An advisor is assigned with a role to counsel and guide the resident through the residency processes, procedures, and key learning milestones. Conclusion The difference between the role of advisor and that of mentor is of critical importance and allowed for the evolution of faculty participants' role as resident advisors, including the formulation of expectations for advisors, and the creation of an advisor toolkit. Our modifiable toolkit can enhance the advising process for residents in many disciplines. We saw an improvement in resident satisfaction from 2006 to 2009.

The mental rotation (MR) is an abstract mental operation thanks to which a person imagines rotating an object or a body part to place it in an other position. The ability to perform MR was belived to belong to the right hemisphere for objects, and to the left for one’s ownbody images. Mental rotation is considered to be basic for imitation with the anatomical perspective, which in turn is needed for social interactions and learning. Altered imitative performances have been reported in patients with resections or microstructure alterations of the corpus callosum (CC). These patients also display a reduced MR ability compared to control subjects, as shown in a recent behavioral study. The difference was statistically significant, leading us to hypothesize a role of the CC to integrate the two hemispheres’ asymmetric functions. The present study was designed to detect, by means of a functional MRI, the cortical activation evoked during an MR task in healthy control subjects and callosotomized patients. The results suggest that performing MR requires activation of opercular cortex and inferior parietal lobule in either hemispheres, and likely the integrity of the CC, thus confirming that the main brain commissure is involved in cognitive functions.

How do we represent extent in our spatial world? Recent work has shown that even the simplest spatial judgments — estimates of 2D area — present challenges to our visual system. Indeed, area judgments are best accounted for by ‘additive area’ (the sum of objects’ dimensions) rather than ‘true area’ (i.e., a pixel count). But is ‘additive area’ itself the right explanation — or might other models better explain the results? Here, we offer three direct and novel demonstrations that ‘additive area’ explains area judgments. First, using stimuli that are simultaneously equated for number and all other confounding dimensions, we show that area judgments are nevertheless explained by ‘additive area’. Next, we show how ‘scaling’ models of area fail to explain even basic illusions of area. By contrasting squares with diamonds (i.e., the same squares, but rotated), we show a robust tendency to perceive the diamonds as having more area — an effect that no other model of area perception would predict. These results not only confirm the fundamental role of ‘additive area’ in judgments of spatial extent, but they highlight the importance of accounting for this dimension in studies of other features (e.g., density, number) in visual perception.
