A record of the genus Trochochaeta (Polychaeta) in the southern hemisphere with description of a new species

The small polychaete family Trochochaetidae is monogeneric and had been recorded almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere before this study. During a benthic investigation in the coastal shelf zone off Angola at 15°S several specimens were collected from 84 m depth differing from other members of the family and we described it as a new species herein. The only known African species so far was Trochochaeta kirkegaardi from the eastern Atlantic. Trochochaeta ankeae sp. nov. is characterized by having four minute eyes, a small conical antenna, a nuchal crest projecting through chaetiger 2, by lacking notochaetae on chaetiger 2, by having acicular spines on neuropodia 2 and 3 and a pair of conical papillae ventral on abdomen. A key to all 11 known species (including an unnamed one) is given.

AbstractMost species of the genusPliosaurusOwen, 1842 come from the Northern Hemisphere, however, a growing number of new specimens are now available from the Southern Hemisphere. Here, a new species ofPliosaurusis described, the second for the genus from the Southern Hemisphere, collected from the upper Tithonian (Jurassic) levels of the Vaca Muerta Formation, Neuquén Province, Patagonia.Pliosaurus almanzaensisnew species is characterized by two autapomophies: the angular participating in the mandibular symphysis and the occipital condyle without a notochordal pit or several, irregularly arranged grooves. Additionally,P.almanzaensisn. sp. can be differentiated from otherPliosaurusspecies by the following characters: trihedral teeth, nine or more symphyseal alveoli, 15–17 post-symphyseal alveoli, and the parasphenoid without a ventral keel.Pliosaurus almanzaensisn. sp. shows thatPliosaurusspecies with nine or more symphyseal alveoli persisted until the late Tithonian, contrary to previous assumptions that only species with six symphyseal alveoli were present.

A new South African species of the genus Chaperiopsis is described from material deposited in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Chaperiopsis stephensoni is redescribed and figured from the original material.The genus Chaperiopsis Uttley, 1949 is widely distributed in the southern hemisphere. Numerous species of this genus have been described in different works; notable amongst these are the works of Busk (1854, 1884), Kluge (1914), Uttley (1949), Gordon (1984), Hayward & Thorpe (1988), Reverter Gil & Fernández Pulpeiro (1995) and Hayward (1995). Some previous records of Chaperiopsis spp. from South Africa are included in the works of Jullien (1881), Busk (1884), O'Donoghue & De Watteville (1935), O'Donoghue (1957) and Hayward & Cook (1983).

During recent investigations of the groundwater fauna of Cameroon, specimens of a new species of the stygobitic genus Metastenasellus, M. boutini sp. nov. were collected in wells of the city of Douala. The new species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the genus by its relatively large size (up to 11 mm), pleonite 1 and 2 half the length of pereonite 7, the shape of pleopod 2 in males (presence of an external lobe on the protopodite, distal part of the spermatic duct slightly protruding out of the second article, lack of a distal seta on the exopodite), and uropod half the length of the pleotelson. Ecological data and a key to Metastenasellus species are provided. We also performed an exhaustive analysis of the literature on Stenasellidae in Africa to study the geographical distribution of the family in this continent and discuss some hypotheses about the origin of African species.

During recent decades, Althenia with two species in Eurasia and Africa was accepted as one of four genera of submerged aquatics comprising the family Zannichelliaceae. Molecular phylogenetic data confirmed monophyly of Zannichelliaceae in its traditional circumscription but placed the clade together with Potamogeton and its segregate genera, so that Zannichelliaceae is currently placed in synonymy of Potamogetonaceae. Recent molecular data demonstrated that Eurasian and African species traditionally placed in Althenia s.str. are nested within the Australasian (Australia and New Zealand) Lepilaena. As a result, the two genera were combined under the name Althenia s.l. The present study describes a new species, A. hearnii T. Macfarlane & D.D. Sokoloff from southwestern Western Australia which fills a morphological gap between species traditionally placed in Althenia s.str. and Lepilaena, thus supporting molecular phylogenetic evidence for lumping the two genera. The new species has a polysymmetric circular stigma like Althenia s.str. but 12-sporangiate anther like most species traditionally classified in Lepilaena. Like some other Australian species, Althenia hearnii is dioecious with dimorphic male and female inflorescences. The dimorphism includes the presence of a ligule in leaves within male inflorescences and the absence of a ligule in leaves within female inflorescences as well as strong differences in internode length between male and female inflorescences. A new combination Althenia patentifolia (E.L. Robertson) T. Macfarlane & D.D. Sokoloff is also made in order to allow Althenia to be fully applied in Australia. A revised key to the species of Althenia is provided.

A new genus and a new species, Haplodendron buzwilsoni, from the southeastern Australian mid bathyal are described. This is the first record of the family in the Southern Hemisphere IndoPacific. Diagnostic characters of the new genus are compared with those of other genera in the family. The possible significance of the joint possession, between the new genus and Dendrotion (Dendrotiidae), of a stalk carrying the antennulae and antennae is discussed. New observations on male reproductive structures are made.

The family Hypoxidaceae is mainly distributed in the southern hemisphere of the Old World and in the North America (Sanchez-Ken 2010), with about 200 species belonging to 11 genera (Sanchez-Ken 2010, Liu et al. 2012, Snijman & Kocyan 2013, Odyuo et al. 2016). The genus Curculigo Gaertner (1788: 63) includes 17 species and 4 varieties (Govaerts 2016). It is characterized by its pseudopetiolate leaves, subterranean beaked ovaries, indehiscent fruits and strophiolate seeds (Zimudzi 1994). The first detailed taxonomic treatment of Indian Curculigo was published by Baker (1878), who recorded 7 species and 3 varieties from British India. Hooker (1892) recognized five species from British India and grouped them into two sections, namely C. sect. Curculigo and C. sect. Molineria Colla (1826: 331). Karthikeyan et al. (1989: 82) listed five species of Curculigo from India. However, Curculigo maharashtrensis Almeida & Yadav (2009: 401) and C. savantwadiensis Almeida & Yadav (2009: 402) have been recently described from Western Ghats of India. Hence, the total number of Indian species of Curculigo is now eight.

A new species of Zelandothyas, Z. balloti, is described from South Island, New Zealand. The deutonymph and larva of Zelandothyas diamphida Cook, 1983 are described for the first time. The deutonymph of Malgasacarus rarus Tuzovskij et al., 2008 is redescribed. The family Malgasacaridae Tuzovskij, Gerecke and Goldschmidt, 2008 is synonymized with Zelandothyadidae Cook, 1983 and Malgasacarus Tuzovskij et al., 2008 is transferred to the subfamily Zelandothyadinae. Thus redefined, the family Zelandothyadidae shows an interesting disjunction in the southern hemisphere. Here, it is considered a family incertae sedis, provisionally comprising the monophyletic Zelandothyadinae and the enigmatic Australiothyadinae Cook, 1986. Zelandothyadidae are unusual in combining character states previously considered diagnostic for either Eylaoidea or Hydryphantoidea.

A new species of stomatopod crustacean, Oratosquillina nordica sp. nov. is described from the Indo-West Pacific region (type locality: Taiwan). It is most similar to O. quinquedentata (Brooks, 1886), with which it has been confused. Oratosquillina quinquedendata is presently known only from the southern hemisphere, and most of its northern hemisphere records are referable to O. nordica. Records of O. quinquedentata from India and Sri Lanka require confirmation, possibly representing a third species. A key to the species of Oratosquillina is provided.

Stalked jellyfishes (Cnidaria: Staurozoa) are cryptic, benthic animals, known mainly from polar and temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere. We describe a new species, Calvadosia lewisi, from South Africa and review the staurozoan fauna of the region. Three other species are previously known from South Africa: Calvadosia capensis (Carlgren, 1938); Depastromorpha africana Carlgren, 1935; and Lipkea stephensoni Carlgren, 1933, but all of these are known from very few records and have been poorly illustrated and documented to date. We provide brief descriptions and photographic illustrations for each species and a list of local and global geographical records. Two (L. stephensoni and C. lewisi), but possibly three (D. africana), of the four known South African staurozoan species are endemic from South Africa. The new species, images, and extra distributional records presented here greatly improve knowledge of the staurozoan fauna in South Africa and, consequently, of the Southern Hemisphere.

Polychaetes of the family Alvinellidae (Terrebellida) are endemic to hydrothermal vent communities. A new species from the Juan de Fuca and Gorda ridges in the Northeast Pacific is described; aspects of its buccal appendages, segment number, and uncini placement are unique. Because of initial confusion with a sympatric species, Paralvinella palmiformis Desbruyères and Laubier, protein mobilities were examined to differentiate the species electrophoretically with reference to a third alvinellid, Alvinella pompejana. Among the 17 loci scored, fewer than a quarter of the alleles were present in the two Paralvinella species; Paralvinella sulfincola n.sp. has several diagnostic allozymes. This new species inhabits tubes on the sides of active smoker chimneys and migrates upward as the chimney grows. Individuals are recorded within 1 cm of hydrothermal fluids at temperatures in excess of 300 °C; the species appears to have several molecular adaptations to high ambient temperatures. The Alvinellidae form a fascinating group within which to study phylogenetic and selective processes.
