Nutritional attributes in the fillet of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) from the Arabian Sea near the south-west coast of India

Inter-annual and seasonal variability in the nutritional parameters of the edible portion of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) collected from the Arabian Sea were determined for a period of 4 years. Greater levels of long chain n-3 fatty acids (35% during pre-monsoon), critical in the human diet for their anti-inflammatory properties with greater n-3:n-6 fatty acid ratio (8:12) demonstrated that this species may serve as an alternative to balance the greater amount of n-6 fatty acids. The present study demonstrated skipjack tuna as a significant source of protein, amino acids, minerals and vitamins. A balanced essential to non-essential amino acid ratio (1.2:1.4) in the fillets indicated that this species could provide well-balanced protein depositions. Vitamins A and K1 demonstrated post-monsoon maxima, whilst vitamins D3 and E showed pre-monsoon maxima. Greater calcium (172 mg 100 g−1) and phosphorus contents (923 mg 100 g−1) were recorded in the fillets of skipjack tuna during the pre-monsoon season. The chlorophyll-a concentration and sea surface temperature of its habitat were considered to understand their effect on the nutritional composition of skipjack tuna all through the study period. Significant correlation between long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (r2 ~ 0.99) of skipjack tuna alongside chlorophyll-a concentration was observed, particularly during the monsoon. The lesser atherogenic/thrombogenicity indices (<1), greater hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratio (>1.0), and lesser cholesterol contents (<50 mg 100 g−1) of the fillets in skipjack tuna contributed towards its parameters to be qualified as a high value, balanced nutritional source.

The muscle lipid, fatty acids and total cholesterol profiles of the spiny cheek grouper, Epinephelus diacanthus, collected from south-west (Arabian Sea) and south-east coasts (Bay of Bengal) of India were evaluated over four years (2008–2011) with regard to three seasons (pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon). Fatty acids were correlated with chlorophyll-a concentration and sea surface temperature. Lipid content, total polyunsaturated, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acids of the samples from the south-west coast showed positive correlation with chlorophyll-a concentration during the monsoon (r2 = 0.93, 0.97, 0.97 and 0.99, respectively). Higher hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratio (>1.0) and low atherogenic (<1.2), thrombogenicity (≤0.6) indices make the groupers collected from the coast of the Arabian Sea a valued candidate species for human nutrition. High levels of n-3 fatty acids (>19% during post-monsoon), important in the human diet for their platelet anti-aggregating and blood pressure-reducing properties, for groupers collected from the south-west coast, with higher n-3/n-6 fatty acid ratio (>5.1) proved this species from the coast of the Arabian Sea to be a desirable item in the human diet.

The fishing ground is identical and closely related to chlorophyll-a abundance in the waters, associated with its fisheries potential. This research has been conducted to determine the concentration and distribution of chlorophyll-a in the seas, especially in the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 712 encompassing the Java Sea. The analysis used monthly time-series data collected from the satellite imagery over the last 11 years, taken through the ERDDAP website. The mean concentration of chlorophyll-a in the study area was 1.13 mg/l in June 2013. Based on 11 years of data processing, it can be concluded that the highest concentration of chlorophyll-a occurred in the west monsoon season from November to April, where increased rainfall caused the nutrient wash from terrestrial to the open waters. The lowest chlorophyll-a concentration happened in the east monsoon season from April to November, where the dry season arrived. The existence of pelagic fishes in FMA 712, such as Sardinella Lemurs and Sardinella Fimbriata, in waters highly influenced by the chlorophyll-a concentration, while Thunnus Sp. and Exocoetidae Sp. not affected significantly to the existence of chlorophyll-a concentration and its distribution.

The concentrations of linoleic and linolenic acids and their metabolites in the liver, kidney, brain, erythrocytes and plasma of fetal lambs at various stages of gestation, and of newborn and 2-week-01d suckled lambs was determined. Throughout gestation the fetal tissues, erythrocytes and plasma all contained low levels of linoleic and linolenic acids together with consistently high levels of their long-chain polyunsaturated metabolites. The triene : tetraene (eicosa-5,8, 11-trienoic acid/arachidonic acid) ratio was always 0 . 4 or less except at birth when it reached 0 . 6 in liver and 0 . 9 in plasma. Milk intake significantly increased the linoleic and linolenic acid levels in the lamb by 2 weeks after birth. These results show that the developing fetal lamb should not be regarded as being deficient in essential fatty acids, as suggested by previous investigators. It is proposed that the total metabolites of linoleic and linolenic acids are the most appropriate measure of the essential fatty acid status of the fetal lamb.

Isochrysis affinis galbana is a single-cell marine species. Isochrysis affinis galbana is used as a live feed source in aquaculture because it contains high amount of long chain unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially in the feeding of larvae of bivalves, Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a diatom species of pennate with oval and fusiform cell forms. Phaeodactylum tricornutum contains 30-45% long chain unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of which 20-40% is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). And the diatom which is thought to be sources of essential fatty acids and carotenoids (fucoxanthin) is used in the feeding of animal in aquaculture and human. The aim of this study was to estimate the dry matter content of cultured Isochrysis affinis galbana and Phaeodactylum tricornutum by using multiple regression analysis method. Species were cultured in the laboratory conditions with a control group with 20% inoculation rate in F/2 medium and 50% nitrogen deficient medium. During the experiment, optical density, dry matter and chlorophyll a were measured daily. A mathematical model was developed using optic density and chlorophyll a data of the control group and in the group where 50% of the nitrogen was eliminated. Significance test of these models, R2 and MSE were found.
