Reproductive biology of the Egyptian sole, Solea aegyptiaca (Actinopterygii: Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae), in southern Tunisian waters (Central Mediterranean)

AbstractSolea aegyptiaca (Chabanaud, 1927) is one of the most common Soleid species in southern Tunisian waters. This study provides the first detailed information on the reproduction biology of S. aegyptiaca in these areas. Samples of S. aegyptiaca were collected by trawl from the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) between April 2013 and March 2015. A total of 1638 specimens were examined, ranging from 9.7 to 30.7 cm total length. The sex ratio was in favour of males in smaller size classes and females in larger size classes. The macroscopic analysis of the gonads and the progression of the monthly values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that the reproductive season extended from October to February, with GSI peaking in November and December for males and females respectively, and that spawning occurs once a year from November to February. The utilization of lipid reserves, stored predominantly in the liver as well as in muscles, was depicted. The estimated average length at first maturity was 22.31 ± 0.41 cm for males and 23.19 ± 0.184 cm for females. Total fecundity of mature females ranged from 14,160–62,700 eggs per fish, showing a significant increase with size, with an average of 33,020 ± 5239 eggs per fish.

<p>Ikan kurisi (<em>Nemipterus japonicus</em>) merupakan salah satu sumber daya ikan ekonomis penting di Perairan Teluk Banten dan banyak didaratkan di Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Karangantu, Banten. Intensitas penangkapan yang tinggi akan menyebabkan tangkap lebih (<em>overfishing</em>), sehingga mengancam kelestarian ikan kurisi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui beberapa aspek biologi ikan kurisi di Perairan Teluk Banten, seperti struktur ukuran panjang, rasio kelamin, hubungan panjang berat, tingkat kematangan gonad, ukuran panjang rata-rata tertangkap (Lc) dan ukuran pertama kali matang gonad (Lm). Informasi yang diperoleh dapat menjadi bahan pertimbangan dalam kegiatan pengelolaan perikanan. Lokasi pengambilan contoh dilakukan di Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Karangantu, Banten dari bulan Mei hingga Agustus 2012. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ukuran panjang total ikan kurisi<em> </em>berkisar antara 98 dan 211 mm. Perbandingan kelamin jantan dan betina dalam keadaan seimbang dan memiliki pola pertumbuhan allometrik negatif yang menunjukkan pertumbuhan panjang lebih cepat dibandingkan pertumbuhan beratnya. Lebih dari 50% ikan-ikan yang diamati baik jantan maupun betina selama bulan pengamatan belum matang gonad (<em>immature</em>).  Ukuran pertama kali matang gonad adalah 196 mm sedangkan ukuran panjang rata-rata tertangkap adalah 146 mm. Banyaknya ikan yang tertangkap dalam ukuran kecil (kurang dari panjang pertama kali matang gonad) akan mengganggu kelestarian ikan kurisi.</p><p><em><br /></em></p><p><em>Japanese threadfin bream </em>(Nemipterus japonicus<span style="text-decoration: underline;">)</span><em> is one of the most important economical fish resources in the Gulf of Banten and many landed at Archipelago Fishing Port (PPN) of Karangantu. High intensity of fishing activity can cause an overfihing, and threat sustainability of japanese threadfin bream. The research was aimed to determine some biological aspects of japanese threadfin bream in the Gulf of Banten, such as structure of the length, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, gonad maturity stage, the average length of captured (Lc) and the length of first maturity (Lm). It is believed that the collected information can be taken into consideration in the fisheries management activities. The sample was collected at PPN Karangantu, Banten from May to August 2012. The result showed that the length of </em><em>this fish </em><em>ranged between 98 and 211 mm. Ratio of male and female is balance and have negative allometric growth pattern show that the length of growth is more faster than the weight of growth. More than 50% of fish sample both males and females were immature gonads. During observation, length of  first maturity was 196 mm and the average length of captured was 146 mm. </em><em>Many fishes caught was smaller than Lm, It will interfere the sustainability of japanese threadfin bream.</em></p>

ABSTRAK Ikan Wader Ijo (O. hasselti) merupakan ikan khas di Danau Rawapening.  Populasinya saat ini diduga mengalami penurunan, akibat penangkapan ikan Wader Ijo yang sedang bertelur dan penggunaan alat tangkap dengan mesh size kecil. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aspek reproduksi ikan Wader Ijo, faktor lingkungan dan mesh size gill net yang aman digunakan. Penelitian yang dilakukan bersifat deskriptif, dengan teknik pengambilan sampel acak. Penelitian dilaksanakan Juli - Agustus 2016 di Danau Rawapening. Sampel diperoleh 93 ekor menggunakan gill net mesh size 2 inchi, dengan panjang total 111 – 210 mm. Nisbah kelamin 1:6,75 dengan dominasi ikan betina. Sampel didominasi ikan matang gonad pada TKG IV. Berdasarkan analisa PCA, Ikan Wader Ijo pada TKG II, III dan IV memiliki korelasi negatif dengan pH, arus dan oksigen terlarut. Angka Indeks Kematangan Gonad tertinggi betina diperoleh 30,30%, sedangkan jantan 19,67%. Ikan Wader Ijo yang tertangkap belum mengalami recruitment overfishing karena ukuran ikan pertama kali matang gonad jantan 100,63 mm dan betina 110,90 mm lebih kecil dari ukuran rata-rata yang tertangkap153 mm. Fekunditas diperoleh 80.862 – 19.880 butir/individu. Berdasarkan analisa Regresi Power, fekunditas Wader Ijo dipengaruhi oleh panjang tubuhnya. Diameter telur yang diperoleh berkisar 0,01 – 1,01 mm. Berdasarkan analisa Chi-Square, bagian yang berbeda dalam ovarium memiliki hubungan dengan ukuran diameter telur. Mesh size gill net yang aman digunakan minimal berukuran 1,54 inchi. Kata Kunci : Wader Ijo; Aspek Reproduksi;  Rawapening ABSTRACT Bonylip Barb (O. hasselti) is a local fish in Rawapening lake which population of this species in Rawapening already decrease, because of exploitation spawning Bonylip Barb and the used of fishing gear with small mesh size. This research aimed to know reproduction aspects of Bonylip Barb, environmental factors and mesh size of gill net. The method used in this research was descriptive with random sampling method. A total of 93 specimens were collected by gill net mesh size 2 inch from July to August 2016 at Rawapening. Specimens have total lenght 111 – 210 mm. Sex ratio was 1 : 6,75 dominated by female. Gonadal stage dominated by mature fish on level IV. Based on PCA analysis, gonadal stage level II, III and IV have negative correlations with pH, current and dissolved oxygen. The highest Gonadosomatic Index on female was 30,30%, while the male one was 19,67%. Length of first maturity not only male 100,63 mm but also female 110,90 mm smaller than average length of capture 155 mm, it means that Bonylip Barb in Rawapening still safe from recruitment overfishing. Fecundity ranged from 80.862 to 19.880 granules/individual. Based on power regression, fecundity was determined by the total length. Egg diameter ranged from 0,1 to 1,01 mm. Based on Chi-Square, different path of ovary have a corelation  with  egg diameter. Mesh size gill net that used in Rawapening was not recommended under 1,54 inch. Keywords: Bonylip Barb, Reproduction Aspect, Rawapening

To study the reproductive dynamics of the mandi-beiçudo, Iheringichthys labrosus, in the Capivara Reservoir, Paranapanema River, Parana, Brazil, specimens were captured trimonthly from March 2001 to July 2004 at four sampling sites. The sex ratio showed a predominance of females in most of months sampled and the larger length classes. The majority of the individuals captured showed a standard length between 16 and 22 cm, with a maximal length of 27.5 cm. The size at first maturity was estimated to be 18.1 and 19.7 cm for females and males, respectively. Analysis of the temporal variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and frequency of occurrence of gonadal maturation stages of males and females for the months sampled showed that I. labrosus reproduces during the whole year, with peak reproduction in November and December. There was a positive correlation between the mean values of GSI and variation in rainfall values, suggesting that this abiotic factor can influence the reproduction of this species. The mean absolute fecundity was 67274.5  16562.5 oocytes, and the mean relative fecundity was 350.6  186.3 oocytes per gram of total weight.

ABSTRACT Relationship between length and weight (LWR) is used to describe aspects concerning the life cycle of fish, but does not considers possible changes during the lifetime mainly due to the sexual maturation. Thus, this study aims to identify the size at first maturity of Auchenipterichthys longimanus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) and infer if the reproductive engagement could change growth pattern, concerning the LWR. Estimates of the size at first maturity (L 50 ) were made by visual identification of gonadal development and through the gonadosomatic index (G SI ). L 50 was estimated as 12.5 cm for males and 13.0 cm for females when applied visual identification of gonads development. L 50 estimates increased to 13.05 cm for males and 13.7 cm for females when estimated from G SI values. LWR was adjusted by using a regular power function and through the polyphasic growth model, with proportionality and allometric coefficients changing in a two phases. The results indicate differences in the growth pattern concerning males and females, as well as polyphasic growth. The change in the growth pattern of the polyphasic LWR was estimated at 11.42 cm for males and 12.53 cm for females, suggesting that changes in the growth pattern can sign-out the attainment maturity in this catfish.

The reproductive features of four commercially important species of the Diplodus genus were studied in the Gulf of Tunis to contribute to better fisheries management on the local scale. The study was specifically aimed to estimate sex-ratio and size at first maturity, to determine spawning season, to analyse hepatic and muscular energy reserve changes and to highlight possible regional difference over the Diplodus geographical distribution. A total of 570 Diplodus vulgaris (two-banded seabream), 428 Diplodus annularis (annular seabream), 350 Diplodus sargus sargus (white seabream) and 218 Diplodus puntazzo (sharpsnout seabream) were collected from the commercial catches of the artisanal fleet between October 2004 and June 2006. Male:female ratio was initially skewed in favour of females for the four Diplodus species and especially among larger-sized individuals. Length and age at first maturity was 17.4 ± 0.2 cm total length (TL) (4 years) for D. vulgaris, 9.7 cm TL (2 years) for D. annularis, 21.0 ± 0.3 cm TL (4 years) for D. s. sargus, 21.5 ± 0.2 cm TL (3 years) for D. puntazzo and a recommendation is made for the increasing of the captured length. According to the monthly succession of gonad maturity stages and the yearly gonadosomatic index (GSI) fluctuation, the spawning season of Diplodus species present a temporal succession along the year. The two-banded seabream has a winter spawning period, the white seabream is mainly a spring spawner, the annular seabream spawns essentially in summer months and the spawning of sharpsnout seabream takes place in autumn. Generally, hepatosomatic index presented an inverse trend to GSI in relation to the breeding activity. The condition factor showed significant monthly variations affected by the sexual cycle of the Diplodus species.

Abstrak: Biologi reproduksi suatu organisme merupakan salah satu informasi penting dalam upaya pengelolaan sumberdaya perairan. Penelitian biologi reproduksi ikan kembung (Rastrelliger brachysoma) di Teluk Staring, Sulawesi Tenggara dilakukan dari bulan Maret sampai Juli 2018. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis biologi reproduksi ikan kembung yang meliputi tingkat kematangan gonad (TKG), indeks kematangan gonad (IKG), dan ukuran pertama kali matang gonad. Koleksi ikan menggunakan alat tangkap jaring insang permukaan bermata jaring 2 dan 2 ¼ inci. Kematangan gonad ikan diamati berdasarkan morfologi gonad yaitu bentuk, warna, dan bobot gonad. Sebanyak 215 individu ikan kembung tertangkap dengan kisaran panjang 206-297 mm dan bobot 110,0-366,0 g. IKG ikan jantan dan betina tertinggi ditemukan saat bulan Maret (1,80 dan 2,22) dan Mei (1,77 dan 1,91). Ukuran pertama kali matang gonad ikan jantan dan betina terjadi saat berukuran panjang 247 mm dan 239 mm. Research on the biology of short mackerel reproduction (Rastrelliger brachysoma) in Gulf of Staring, Southeast Sulawesi was conducted from March to July 2018. The objective of this research was to describe aspects of the reproductive biology of short mackerel such as gonadal maturation, gonadosomatic index, and length at first maturity (Lm50). Fish collection was done using gillnets (with mesh sizes of 2 and 2¼ inches). The gonadal maturation of fish was determined morphologically by comparing the shape, size, color, and gonad weight. A total of 215 individual fish were caught with ranging 206-297 mm in length and 110.0-366.0 g in weight. The gonadosomatic index of male and female were found in March (1.80 and 2.22) and May (1.77 and 1.91), while length at first maturity (Lm50) of male and female were 239 mm and 247 mm, respectively. This research indicates that the peak of short mackerel spawning in Gulf of Staring waters occurred during March and May.Keywords: Reproduction; short mackerel; spawning season; Gulf of Staring, Southeast Sulawesi

There is practically no information on the biology of Lolliguncula (Loliolopsis) diomedeae. We analyzed specimens caught in four shrimp fishing trips in the Gulf of Tehuantepec in 1999-2001, 2004 and 2006.Sexual maturity and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were used as indicators of reproductive activity. A total of 1 200 individuals were captured, 89% female. Females ranged from 35 to 97mm in mantle length (LDM),with a mode at 80mm and weights 2 to 30,9g; males 20,7 to 65mm LDM with a mode at 35-40mm and weights from 0,4 to 12g. Differences in the LDM and the PT between males and females were significant (KS, p<0,05). The sex ratio was 8:1 H:M (p <0,05). The weight-length relationship type is potential for both sexes, with a negative allometric growth.83% of mature females had high IGS values, in contrast to less than 20% of mature males. The size at first maturity (L50) indicates that males (42,7mm LDM) mature when shorter than females (74,5mm LDM). Maturity, IGS and oceanographic features of the Gulf of Tehuantepec indicate that L. diomedeae spawn there.

The gonadal development, reproductive cycle and growth of Macquarie perch, Macquaria australasica Cuvier, in Lake Dartmouth and selected tributaries of the Murray–Darling River Basin in south-eastern Australia were evaluated. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological analysis were used to determine gonadal development and age and size at first maturity in the resident Lake Dartmouth population. GSI analysis was also used to determine age and size of Macquarie perch at first maturity in the inflowing Mitta Mitta River and other riverine populations within the Goulburn River catchment. Males appeared slightly smaller at first spawning than females at all sites; both sexes were fully mature at four years of age. Differences in size at first maturity were found between the lake and river populations; both males and females of river populations tended to mature at a much smaller size than the fish resident in the lake. Spawning occurred around November. Ovarian and testicular development in this species follows a pattern similar to that of other native Australian percichthyids. The implications for management of recreational fisheries based on minimum size regulations is discussed in relation to site-specific differences in growth rates and size of first maturity of fish.

The biology of the introduced species Clarias gariepinus in lagoa Encantada (Ilhéus, Bahia State) was studied. Samples were obtained with gillnets between May 2002 and February 2004. All individuals caught exceeded the average length at first maturity cited in literature. Males and females in maturation stages indicate that the species is already established in the lake.

Abstract The reproduction biology of Caspian vimba, Vimba vimba (L.), was investigated on the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea using 712 fish specimens collected at three fisheries catch stations located in Talesh, Anzali, and Kiashahr over a two-year period from April 2012 through June 2013. Seasonal changes in the gonadosomatic index, gonad histological status, size frequency distribution of oocytes, and the fecundity of the species were studied. The peaks of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) were observed both in females and males in June 2012 and May 2013 indicating the variable peak spawning time of this species. Histological examinations and oocyte frequency distribution patterns showed synchronous oocyte development in the Caspian vimba. Absolute fecundity ranged from 5873 to 35421 eggs. The size at first maturity for females was 120 mm FL. We concluded that the Caspian vimba is a total spawner with variable spawning dependent on environmental factors.
