The diffuse background of 2–20 keV X-rays over a band of the sky extending from Scorpius to the North galactic pole is found to be isotropic to within 5%, with a spectrum given bywheren= (1.35 ±0.100.07).A comparison with spectra at higher energies indicates that the lower energy spectrum is flatter, corresponding to an apparent unit change in spectral index within the band 20–80 keV. A spectral break in this energy region has been discussed in connection with the collisional energy loss lifetime for metagalactic protons that radiate X-rays via inverse bremsstrahlung collisions with the ambient electrons of the intergalactic medium (Boldt and Serlemitsos, 1969; Hayakawa, 1970).

This paper demonstrates the potential of a new 3D imaging technique, Spectral Computed Tomography (sp-CT), to identify heavy elements inside materials, which can be used to classify mineral phases. The method combines the total X-ray transmission measured by a normal polychromatic X-ray detector, and the transmitted X-ray energy spectrum measured by a detector that discriminates between X-rays with energies of about 1.1 keV resolution. An analysis of the energy spectrum allows to identify sudden changes of transmission at K-edge energies that are specific of each element. The additional information about the elements in a phase improves the classification of mineral phases from grey-scale 3D images that would be otherwise difficult due to artefacts or the lack of contrast between phases. The ability to identify the elements inside the minerals that compose ore particles and rocks is crucial to broaden the application of 3D imaging in Earth sciences research and mineral process engineering, which will represent an important complement to traditional 2D imaging mineral characterization methods. In this paper, the first applications of sp-CT to classify mineral phases are showcased and the limitations and further developments are discussed.

The 1/4 keV diffuse X-ray background (SXRB) is discussed in relation to the local interstellar medium (LISM). The most likely source for these soft X-rays is thermal emission from a hot diffuse plasma. The existence of a non-zero flux from all directions and the short ISM mean free path of these X-rays (1020HI cm-2), coupled with ISM pressure constraints, imply that the plasma has a local component and that it must, at least locally (nearest hundred parsecs), have a large filling factor. Our understanding of the geometry and physical parameters of the LISM is therefore directly tied to our understanding of the SXRB.

We present results of the optical identification of a spatially complete, flux limited sample of about 700 ROSAT All-Sky X-ray sources contained in 6 study areas north of δ = −9° with |bII|> 20° (including one region near the North Galactic pole (NGP), another one near the North Ecliptic pole (NEP)). Countrate limits are 0.01 cts s–1 near the NEP and 0.03 cts s–1 for the other areas. The optical observations were performed at the 2.15-m telescope of the Guillermo Haro Observatory, Mexico, using the Landessterwarte Faint Object Spectrograph Camera which allows to carry out direct CCD imaging and multi-object spectroscopy. The limiting magnitude is about 19m for spectroscopy and about 23m for B and R direct imaging. Our analysis shows a dependency of the ratio of ‘extragalactic’ (e.g., AGN, cluster of galaxies) to ‘stellar’ (e.g., coronal emitters, active binaries) counterparts on NH. In the area near the NGP (low NH) ‘extragalactic’ counterparts dominate, while in the area with the highest NH ‘stellar’ counterparts dominate.

The VLA FIRST survey is now in its second year. We have completed mapping over 1500 deg2 of the North Galactic Cap and present here the catalog of the 138,000 radio sources detected therein. We discuss the statistics of this new catalog including the two-point angular correlation function for all radio emitters, present our optical identification of 24,000 sources using the APM catalog, and report followup studies on radio variability, X-ray source identification, and our bright quasar sample.

Below 1 keV, analyses of X-ray background data are complicated by galactic absorption effects, which cause the received intensity to vary with galactic latitude. Bowyer et al. (1968) observed that the diffuse background did not fall off as rapidly as was expected towards the galactic plane. One plausible interpretation of their data would be to suppose that a significant flux of soft X-rays emanates from the disc itself. I wish to discuss what could be inferred about the latter component from improved observations of its latitude-dependence, and by indirect methods.

ABSTRACT Multiband observations on the Type Ia supernova remnant SN 1006 indicate peculiar properties in its morphologies of emission in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. In the hard X-rays, the remnant is bilateral with two opposite bright limbs with prominent protrusions. Moreover, a filament has been detected at the radio, optical, and soft X-ray wavelengths. The reason for these peculiar features in the morphologies of the remnant is investigated using 3D HD simulations. With the assumption that the supernova ejecta are evolved in the ambient medium with a density discontinuity, the radius of the remnant’s boundary is smaller in the tenuous medium, and the shell consists of two hemispheres with different radii. Along particular line of sights, protrusions appear on the periphery of the remnants since the emission from the edge of the hemisphere with a larger radius is located outside that from the shell of the small hemisphere. Furthermore, the north-west filament of SN 1006 arises as a result of the intersection of the line of sight and the shocked material near the edges of the two hemispheres. It can be concluded that the protrusions on the north-east and south-west limbs and the north-west filament in the morphologies of SN 1006 can be reproduced as the remnants interacting with the medium with a density discontinuity.

X-ray bursts are defined as electromagnetic radiation originating from electronic transitions involving the lowest electron shells; gamma rays are of nuclear origin. Abstract. The PULSAUR II rocket was launched from Andøya Rocket Range at 23.43 UT on 9 February 1994 into a pulsating aurora. In this paper we focus on the observations of precipitating electrons and auroral X-rays. By using models it is possible to deduce the electron energy spectrum from X-ray measurements. Comparisons are made between the deduced electron fluxes and the directly measured electron fluxes on the rocket. We found the shape of the observed and the deduced electron spectra to fit very well, with almost identical e-folding energies in the energy range from 10 ke V to ~60–80 ke V. For the integrated fluxes from 10.8 to 250 ke V, we found a discrepancy of 30% . By combining two models, we have found a good method of deducing the electron precipitation from X-ray measurements. The discrepancies between calculations and measurements are in the range of the uncertainties in the measurements.Key words. The article presents the developed structure of the novel needle proportional gas detector (NPC – Needle Proportional Counter) used for the detection of X-rays and gamma rays. The advantage of the detector is its simple mechanical construction and the possibility of detection of incident radiation in a direction parallel to the needle. The measured energy spectrum of the isotope Fe-55 by means of the developed detector is presented.

We present the results of a temporal and spectral study of the BL Lacertae object OJ 287 in optical, UV, and X-ray bands with observations performed by Swift satellite during September 2019–March 2020. In this period, the source showed moderate variability characterized by variability amplitude of ∼22–31% in all the wavelengths on a short timescale, except the hard X-ray band which was variable by only ∼8%. We observed that the X-ray flux of the source was significantly dominated by the soft photons below 2 keV. Soft lags of ∼45 days were detected between the optical/UV and soft X-ray emissions, while there is no correlation between the hard X-rays and the lower energy bands indicating the presence of two emission components or electron populations. Although two components contribute to the X-ray emission, most of the 0.3–10 keV spectra were well fitted with an absorbed power-law model which outlines the dominance of synchrotron over inverse Compton (IC) mechanism. The X-ray spectra follow a weak “softer when brighter” trend.
