Rings of Uranus: A Review of Occultation Results

Since their discovery in 1977 (Elliot 1979), the dark, narrow rings of Uranus have intrigued dynamicists. The main enigma has been how the rings can remain so narrow - only a few km wide - when particle collisions and the Poynting-Robertson effect should cause the particles to disperse. The Uranian rings have posed other problems as well, and have proved to be a unique system for developing dynamical models of rings. The reason for this theoretical interest is the high precision and time coverage of the data available from occultation observations. With occultations we obtain a spatial resolution of 1 km in the position of ring segments and a resolution of 4 km in their structural details. These high-resolution data are available sufficiently often to be useful for dynamical purposes - at the rate of 1-2 events per year. This spatial resolution is somewhat better than that obtained by Voyager imaging of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s rings (Owen et al. 1979; Smith et al. 1981). Ground-based images of the Uranian rings, obtained by Matthews, Nicholson, and Neugebauer (1981), have a spatial resolution of ~50,000 km. Although unable to resolve individual rings, these data have established the mean geometric albedo of the rings at 0.030 ± 0.005.

<p>High-resolution data are readily available and used more than ever in hydrological modeling, despite few investigations demonstrating the added value. Nonetheless, a few studies have looked into the benefits of using increased spatial resolution data with the widely-used, semi-distributed, SWAT model. Meanwhile, far too little attention has been paid to the physically-based, semi-distributed, hydrological model HYDROTEL which is widely used for hydrological forecasting and hydroclimatic studies in Quebec, Canada. In a preliminary study, we demonstrated that increasing the spatial resolution of the digital elevation model (DEM) had a significant impact on the discretization of a watershed into hillslopes (i.e., computational units of HYDROTEL), and on their topographic attributes (slope, elevation and area). Accordingly, values of the calibration parameters were also substantially affected; whereas model performance was slightly improved for high- and low-flows only. This is why, we hereby propose the systematic assessment of HYDROTEL with respect to the resolution of the spatiotemporal computational domain for a specific physiographic scale. This investigation was conducted for the 350-km<sup>2</sup> St. Charles River watershed, Quebec, Canada. The DEM used was derived from LiDAR data and aggregated at 20 m. Due to a lack of accurate precipitation information at time scales less than 24 hr, data from the high resolution deterministic precipitation analysis system, CaPA-HRDPA, were used to generate various time steps (6, 8, 12, and 24 hr) and to control results obtained from observed data. This approach, recently applied to three watersheds in Yukon, proved to be an excellent alternative to calibrate a hydrological model in a region known as a hydometeorological desert (see EGU 2020 presentation of Abbasnezhadi and Rousseau). The number of computational units ranged between 5 to 684 hillslopes, with mean areas ranging from 75 km<sup>2</sup> to 0.5 km<sup>2</sup>. HYDROTEL was automatically calibrated over the 2013-2018 period using PADDS. We combined the Kling Gupta Efficiency and the log-transformed Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency to ensure good seasonal and annual representations of the hydrographs. The 12 most sensitive calibration parameters were adjusted using 150 optimisation trials with 150 repetitions each. Behavioral parameters were used to assess uncertainty and ensuing equifinality. All scenarios were evaluated using flow duration curves, performance indicators (RMSE, % Bias) and hydrograph analyses. In addition, quantitative analyses were done with respect to physiographic features such as: length of river segments, hillslopes, and sub-watershed boundaries for each resolution. We believe this study provides the needed systematic framework to assess trade-offs between spatiotemporal resolutions and modeling performances that can be achieved with HYDROTEL. Moreover, the use of various numbers of CaPA-HRDPA stations for model calibration has allowed us to determine the number of precipitation stations needed to achieve a given performance threshold.</p>

AbstractThe Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) Treasury Survey (CATS) has observed 11 Chandra sources (10 AGN) at z ~ 1 in the GOODS-South field with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGSAO) system at Keck Observatory. We combine this K band imaging with ACS imaging in the B, V, I, and z bands to obtain multi-color imaging at a spatial resolution better than 100 mas in all bands. We attempt to remove central optical point sources from AGN using the GALFIT (Peng et al. 2002) routine. We fit Bruzual & Charlot (2003) tau-models to the residuals and find young, dusty stellar populations in the central 1-2 kpc (the mean central optical depth at rest-frame 500 nm is 4-5).

In recent days, requirement of high spatial resolution remote sensing data in various fields has increased tremendously.  High resolution satellite remote sensing data is obtained with long focal length optical systems and low altitude. As fabrication of high-resolution optical system and accommodating on the satellite is a challenging task, various alternate methods are being explored to get high resolution imageries. Alternately the high-resolution data can be obtained from super resolution techniques. The super resolution technique uses single or multiple low-resolution mis-registered data sets to generate high resolution data set.  Various algorithms are employed in super resolution technique to derive high spatial resolution. In this paper we have compared two methods namely overlapping and interleaving methods and their capability in generating high resolution data are presented.

Strychnine has an interesting oligocyclic structure of seven condensed rings. It is easy to crystallize and gives crystals of excellent quality which diffract nicely to high regions in reciprocal space. It was thus chosen for a comparative charge-density study based on four high-resolution data sets (sin θ/λ ≥ 1.15 Å−1) that were measured with different experimental setups in the temperature range 100–15 K. In addition, a theoretical charge density was derived from a B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) calculation. The agreement expressed in bond topological parameters among the four experimental charge densities is better than between experiment and theory.

Abstract Background: The post-mastectomy changes to the locomotor system are related to the scar and adhesion or to the lymphatic edema after amputation which, in turn, lead to local and global distraction of the work of the muscles. These changes lead to body statics disturbance that changes the projection of the center of gravity and worsens motor response due to changing of the muscle sensitivity. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the static balance of women after undergoing mastectomy. Methods: The study included 150 women, including 75 who underwent mastectomy (mean age: 60±7.6) years, mean body mass index (BMI): 26 (±3.6) kg/m2) and 75 who were placed in the control group with matched age and BMI. The study was conducted using a tensometric platform. Results: Statistically significant differences were found for almost all parameters between the post-mastectomy group and group of healthy women, regarding center of foot pressure (COP) path length in the Y and X axes and the mean amplitude of COP. Conclusions: First, the findings revealed that balance in post-mastectomy women is significantly better than in the control group. Second, physiotherapeutic treatment of post-mastectomy women may have improved their posture stability compared with their peers.

<p>The studies on heterosis were carried with four male sterile lines namely; ms<sub>7</sub>, ms<sub>8</sub>, ms<sub>9,</sub> ms<sub>10</sub> and 18 diverse pollinators as tester by using line × tester crossing programme. The 72 F<sub>1</sub> hybrids were produced and evaluated along with 22 parental lines during summer 2009 and rainy season 2009 in Randomized Block Design. Observations were recorded on nine quantitative traits during both the seasons. Highly significant variances for all the traits indicated the sufficient variability in the parental material for all the characters under study. The performance of F<sub>1</sub> hybrids was much better than the mean performance of parents during both the crop seasons. Appreciable heterosis was observed in all the characters, except flower weight in summer and plant height in rainy season.</p>

Abstract. Based on the map of landscapes and permafrost conditions in Yakutia (Merzlotno-landshaftnaya karta Yakutskoi0 ASSR, Gosgeodeziya SSSR, 1991), rasterized maps of permafrost temperature and active-layer thickness of Yakutia, East Siberia were derived. The mean and standard deviation at 0.5-degree grid cell size are estimated by assigning a probability density function at 0.001-degree spatial resolution. The gridded datasets can be accessed at the PANGAEA repository (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.808240). Spatial pattern of both variables are dominated by a climatic gradient from north to south, and by mountains and the soil type distribution. Uncertainties are highest in mountains and in the sporadic permafrost zone in the south. The maps are best suited as a benchmark for land surface models which include a permafrost module.
