Digenean Trematoda infection of inshore fish at South Georgia

A sample of 111 fish of eight species caught in two fjords at South Georgia were examined for digenean trematode parasites. The alimentary tracts of all specimens were infected with digeneans. The dominant species was Elytrophalloides oatesi (Leiper & Atkinson) which was found in all fish, with a maximum number of 1961 specimens per fish. Other common species were; Macvicaria pennelli (Leiper & Atkinson), Lepidapedon garrardi (Leiper & Atkinson), Lecithaster macrocotyle Szidat & Graefe, Genolinea bowersi (Leiper & Atkinson) and Postmonorchis variabilis Prudhoe & Bray. Three further species, Neolebouria antarctica (Szidat & Graefe), Discoverytrema markowskii Gibson and Gonocerca phycidis Manter, were rare. Infection of the most commonly caught fish at South Georgia, Notothenia rossii Richardson, is compared with that of N. rossii at Admiralty Bay, South Shetland Islands. The species composition of common parasites was similar in both areas but conspicuous differences in the frequency of individual digenean species were found.

AbstractThe infection of black rockcod,Notothenia coriiceps,with digeneans in Admiralty Bay (South Shetland Islands) within three months, from November 2007 to January 2008, is compared with the infection in the same three months in 1978/79, based on the examination of twenty fish collected in each month. Digenea found in 1978/1979 season were more numer-ous, and more diverse. Only five digenean species,Macvicaria georgiana,Neolebouria antarctica,Lepidapedon garrardi,Genolinea bowersiandLecithaster macrocotyle, were re-corded during both investigations, whereas three species,Neolepidapedon trematomi,Elytro-phalloides oatesiandGonocerca phycidis, only in 1978/79.M. georgianawas the dominant species in 1978/79 and sub-dominant in 2007/08. Other digeneans were found inN. coriicepsin 2007/08 invariably together withM. georgiana. G. bowersiwas the sub-dominant species in 1978/79 and the most common species in 2007/2008. Infections with Digenea belonging to other species were much less intense. Of the three rare or common species in 1978/79, the two,L. garrardiandL. macrocotyle, occurred in both seasons, whereasE. oatesioccurred only in 1978/79. Three remaining species were sporadic or absent. The overall results there-fore demonstrated that infections with almost all digenean species were less strong in 2007/08 than three decades earlier, in 1978/79. Only data onM. georgiana,G. bowersiandL.garrardiwere statistically significant (p <0.05). Data on the occurrence of 14 species of Digenea inN. coriicepsfrom South Shetland Islands, South Orkney Islands, South Georgia, Argentine Is-lands, Melchior Islands, Adelie Land and Heard Island are given.

Changes in acanthocephalan infection of the Antarctic fishNotothenia coriicepsin Admiralty Bay, King George Island, over 29 yearsA comparison between the levels of infection with Acanthocephala of the fishNotothenia coriicepsin Admiralty Bay (South Shetland Islands, Antarctic) in 1978/79 and 2007/08 is presented. The same eight acanthocephalan species, three echinorhynchids maturing in fish,Aspersentis megarhynchus(dominant species),Metacanthocephalus johnstoni(subdominant species) andM. dalmori(common species), and five polymorphids maturing in mammals and birds,Corynosoma hamanni, C. pseudohamanni(both co-dominant species),C. arctocephaliandC. bullosum(both common species), andC. shackletoni(rare species), were found. Echinorhynchids were more numerous in 2007/08 (mean abundance 46.54 versus 35.35 in 1978/79), whereas polymorphids more numerous in 1978/79 (mean abundance 74.35versus36.40 in 2007/08). The overall results therefore demonstrated that echinorhynchids were more numerous than polymorphids in 2007/08 and the reverse was true in 1978/79. This situation is dependent mainly upon the decreased infections withC. hamanni, C. pseudohamanniandC. bullosum, and to a lesser degree upon the increasing of infections withM. johnstoni.The decrease of the threeCorynosomaspp. is possibly associated with the decreasing of populations of final hosts, seals, on the shore of Admiralty Bay in the vicinity ofArctowskiStation.

AbstractNew data on the infection with Acanthocephala of 33 fish caught in Admiralty Bay in November 2007 to January 2008 are given. These fish belong to 5 species: Notothenia rossii (22 immature specimens), Lindbergichthys nudifrons (n = 7), Trematomus bernacchii (n = 1), T. newnesi (n = 1) and Harpagifer antarcticus (n = 2). Three species of Echinorhynchida: Aspersentis megarhynchus, Metacanthocephalus dalmori and M. johnstoni and four species of Polymorphida: Corynosoma arctocephali, C. bullosum, C. hamanni and C. pseudohamanni, were found. Prevalence of N. rossii and L. nudifrons was 100%. The mean abundance of infection of N. rossii (125.09) was larger than that of Notothenia coriiceps (82.93). Data of infection of N. rossii in 2007 was almost identical with that in 1979 (mean abundance 118.66). The most abundant in this host were A. megarhynchus, M. johnstoni, C. hamanni and C. pseudohamanni (mean abundances 36.36, 29.77, 13.86 and 44.73, respectively). In total Echinorhynchida were more abundant than Polymorphida in 2007/08 (66.18 versus 58.91). Reverse situation was in 1979 (mean abundance 47.36 for Echinorhynchida and 71.3 for Polymorphida. Only 7 L. nudifrons were examined in 2007/08 and Echinorhynchida were more numerous in this host (mean abundance 26.71) than Polymorphida (10.29). Single specimens of other fish were infected with a few Acanthocephala belonging to species recorded in the same hosts with those found in 1978/79.

An examination of 111 fish of eight species, including 92 immature Notothenia rossii Richardson revealed nine acanthocephalan species, including four Echinorhynchida occurring in the alimentary tract and five Polymorphida in the body cavity. Echinorhynchida were much more numerous (87% specimens of 4855 collected), especially Metacanthocephalus johnstoni Zdzitowiecki (the dominant species) and Aspersentis megarhynchus (Linstow). The Polymorphida parasites of seals (three species) were more abundant than species parasitic in birds (two species). Association of most of species, (except Corynosoma bullosum (Linstow) and Echinorhynchus spp.), with the inshore (fjord) environment was confirmed. The species diversity, prevalence and density of infection increased with the size of immature N. rossii. Differences in acanthocephalan occurrence and changes with time are related to differences in host distribution and abundance. For example, the occurrence of C. arctocephali in N. rossii at South Georgia is related to the increase of the fur seal population. A list of acanthocephalans in fish at South Georgia and the South Shetland Islands (14 species in total) is included.

Contribution to the knowledge of the infection with Acanthocephala of a predatory Antarctic ice-fish Chaenocephalus aceratus Adult females of a predatory fish, the blackfin icefish, Chaenocephalus aceratus examined at the South Shetland Islands and South Orkney Islands were by several orders of magnitude more infected with Acanthocephala than the males and immature females. Such phenomenon has not been observed in the neritic zone at South Georgia. Cystacanths of Corynosoma hamanni and Corynosoma pseudohamanni were the dominant parasites in Admiralty Bay, whereas Corynosoma bullosum was the dominant in the open sea off the South Shetland Islands and South Georgia, and in the sub-coastal waters off the South Orkney Islands. However, the dominance of C. bullosum was observed in several hosts in Admiralty Bay and the co-dominance of C. bullosum, C. hamanni, and C. pseudohamanni in one mature female in the neritic zone at the South Shetland Islands. Probably, these fish previously lived in the open sea. Cystacanths of Corynosoma arctocephali and Corynosoma shackletoni occurred in the fish in Admiralty Bay and off South Georgia. The former parasite was present also off the South Orkney Islands. One cystacanth of Andracantha baylisi was found off South Georgia. Two echinorhynchids, Aspersentis megarhynchus and Metacanthocephalus dalmori, occurred in the alimentary tracts of the fish caught in Admiralty Bay and one specimen of Echinorhynchus petrotschenkoi off the South Shetland Islands. The highest infection, amounting to 816 acanthocephalans, was found in a mature female in Admiralty Bay. One cystacanth of C. hamanni occurred in a single immature fish caught in the sub-coastal area off Deception Island.

AbstractCribroelphidium webbi sp. nov. is the only adequately described sub-Recent elphidiid foraminifer from Antarctica. In Admiralty Bay (King George Island, South Shetland Islands), it is found at several locations within inner fiord setting at water depths between 33 and 165 m, but most commonly shallower than 100 m. In outer basins this foraminifer is absent. In the cores analysed, C. webbi sp. nov. is present in well-constrained sub-Recent horizons that are clearly related to climate warming and deglaciation. These horizons represent a diachronous facies marker rather than a single stratigraphic layer. Cribroelphidium webbi sp. nov. shows clear association with retreating tidewater glaciers, therefore it is an important sensitive glacier-proximal indicator. It appears that it shares similar ecologic affinities with Cribroelphidium excavatum clavatum, which is widely distributed throughout the Arctic.

AbstractAdmiralty Bay (King George Island) is an Antarctic Specially Managed Area and one the most thoroughly studied small-scale marine basins in the Southern Ocean. Our study provides new data on the isopod fauna in this glacially affected fjord. Twelve species of isopods were recorded in this basin for the first time. Six of them were found for the first time in the region of the South Shetland Islands. The highest number of species new for Admiralty Bay were found in the families Munnopsidae (4 species) and Munnidae (3 species).

Abstract This paper presents the scope of geographical research conducted at Arctowski Station during the 30th Polish Antarctic Expedition. The research included meteorological, climatological, geomorphological and glaciological issues. During the expedition, research was conducted on sandur sediments on the outwash plain of Sphinx Glacier, the size of the aeolian transport, intensity of periglacial phenomena, and the way in which environmental conditions are recorded on quartz grains collected on the Admiralty Bay beaches. Detailed measurements of the basic meteorological components were made, geomorphological maps of the outwash plains of Sphinx, Baranowski, and Windy Glaciers were also completed.

This study provides the summary of the reports of the geographical distribution in the Maritime Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions of Parochlus steinenii (Gercke, 1889) (Diptera, Chironomidae), the only flying insect occurring naturally in the Antarctic continent. The distribution encompasses the South Shetland Islands (Maritime Antarctic), South Georgia (sub-Antarctic), and parts of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR, southern Chile). In total 78 occurrence records were identified, 53 from our own records, 19 from the literature, and six from other data present in GBIF. Of the 78 records, 66 are from the South Shetland Islands, eight are from South Georgia, and four from the CHBR. This database was developed as one of the main objectives of two Chilean-funded research projects addressing understanding the effects of climate change on sub-Antarctic and Antarctic insects. It provides dataset documenting the distribution of Parochlus steinenii in the Maritime Antarctic, the sub-Antarctic, and the CHBR in southern South America (Chile). The complete dataset is available in Darwin Core Archive format via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
