Antarctica, an isolated and long considered pristine wilderness, is becoming increasingly exposed to the negative effects of ship-borne human activity, and especially the introduction of invasive species. Here, we provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of ship movements into Antarctic waters and a spatially explicit assessment of introduction risk for nonnative marine species in all Antarctic waters. We show that vessels traverse Antarctica’s isolating natural barriers, connecting it directly via an extensive network of ship activity to all global regions, especially South Atlantic and European ports. Ship visits are more than seven times higher to the Antarctic Peninsula (especially east of Anvers Island) and the South Shetland Islands than elsewhere around Antarctica, together accounting for 88% of visits to Southern Ocean ecoregions. Contrary to expectations, we show that while the five recognized “Antarctic Gateway cities” are important last ports of call, especially for research and tourism vessels, an additional 53 ports had vessels directly departing to Antarctica from 2014 to 2018. We identify ports outside Antarctica where biosecurity interventions could be most effectively implemented and the most vulnerable Antarctic locations where monitoring programs for high-risk invaders should be established.

Antarctic fur seals (AFS) are an ecologically important predator and a focal indicator species for ecosystem-based Antarctic fisheries management. This species suffered intensive anthropogenic exploitation until the early 1900s, but recolonized most of its former distribution, including the southern-most colony at Cape Shirreff, South Shetland Islands (SSI). The IUCN describes a single, global AFS population of least concern; however, extensive genetic analyses clearly identify four distinct breeding stocks, including one in the SSI. To update the population status of SSI AFS, we analyzed 20 years of field-based data including population counts, body size and condition, natality, recruitment, foraging behaviors, return rates, and pup mortality at the largest SSI colony. Our findings show a precipitous decline in AFS abundance (86% decrease since 2007), likely driven by leopard seal predation (increasing since 2001, p << 0.001) and potentially worsening summer foraging conditions. We estimated that leopard seals consumed an average of 69.3% (range: 50.3–80.9%) of all AFS pups born each year since 2010. AFS foraging-trip durations, an index of their foraging habitat quality, were consistent with decreasing krill and fish availability. Significant improvement in the age-specific over-winter body condition of AFS indicates that observed population declines are driven by processes local to the northern Antarctic Peninsula. The loss of SSI AFS would substantially reduce the genetic diversity of the species, and decrease its resilience to climate change. There is an urgent need to reevaluate the conservation status of Antarctic fur seals, particularly for the rapidly declining SSI population.

Phaeosphaeria deschampsii was described from dead leaves of Deschampsia antarctica (Antarctic Grass). We surveyed other islands of the South Shetland archipelago, Antarctica, and also found Arctic Grass whitening, the disease associated with this fungus, indicating that is disease is widespread.

Pseudomonas sp. strain LAP_36 was isolated from rhizosphere soil from Deschampsia antarctica on King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Here, we report on its draft genome sequence, which consists of 8,794,771 bp with 60.0% GC content and 8,011 protein-coding genes.

AbstractDetailed knowledge of habitat use by marine megafauna is critical to understand their ecological roles and for the adequate management of marine resources. Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) inhabiting the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean prey largely on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and play a central role in managing the krill fishery. Here, we assessed the demographic structure of three post-mating, early moult male haul-outs in the South Shetland Islands in early March and calculated the relative contribution of juveniles (1–4 years old) and sub-adult males (5–6 years) to the population remaining in maritime Antarctica after the breeding season. We also satellite tagged 11 juvenile males and four sub-adult males to analyze their movements and develop a species distribution model including both age classes. Our results highlighted the dominance of young individuals in the male population, revealed that they do not behave as central place foragers and identified key environmental drivers that affected their distribution at-sea throughout winter. Predicted potential foraging habitat overlapped highly with the known distribution of Antarctic krill, and identified the waters off the western Antarctic Peninsula and the Scotia Sea as the core of the distribution area of juvenile and sub-adult male Antarctic fur seals in winter. This pattern is similar to that of adult males but totally different from that of adult females, as the latter overwinter in areas at latitude 45–55° S. This segregation has implications for the ecology and management of the krill fishery.

AbstractAntarctica plays a fundamental role in the Earth's climate, oceanic circulation and global ecosystem. It is a priority and a scientific challenge to understand its functioning and responses under different scenarios of global warming. However, extreme environmental conditions, seasonality and isolation hampers the efforts to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the physical, biological, chemical and geological processes taking place in Antarctica. Here we present unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as feasible, rapid and accurate tools for environmental and wildlife research in Antarctica. UAV surveys were carried out on Deception Island (South Shetland Islands) using visible, multispectral and thermal sensors, and a water sampling device to develop precise thematic ecological maps, detect anomalous thermal zones, identify and census wildlife, build 3D images of geometrically complex geological formations, and sample dissolved chemicals (< 0.22 µm) waters from inaccessible or protected areas.

ABSTRACT The continental margin is of profound importance as it records continental growth by accretion of orogenic magmas and following continental rifting. A high degree of mantle melting due to hydrous fluid input is expected to simultaneously stimulate continental growth and lower the intrinsic density of the mantle than more fertile mantle, which in turn isolates the continental lithosphere from the convective mantle. The mantle peridotites from Gibbs Island (South Shetland Islands) and Bruce Bank in the Drake Passage provide us an insight into the tectonic history in the circum-Antarctic region. To elucidate the continental growth of Antarctica, we present geochemical data of eight dunites from Gibbs Island and one dunite from Bruce Bank, including Re–Os isotope and highly siderophile element compositions. The dunites are severely affected by serpentinization as evidenced by antigorite + brucite or lizardite (loss on ignition = LOI ranging from 3 to 34 wt.%) but contain primary euhedral to subhedral chromites with or without spherical inclusions. The chromites rarely form lens-shaped aggregates. A dunite from Gibbs Island contains fresh olivine grains filling a fracture in the chromite with low LOI (3 wt.%), indicating a deserpentinization origin from a precursor serpentinized dunite. The dunites show highly depleted bulk-rock major element compositions (Mg/Si = 1.4–1.6 and Al/Si = 0.004–0.01 for Gibbs Island dunites, Mg/Si = 0.66 and Al/Si = 0.008 for Bruce Bank dunite), overlapping a compositional field defined by forearc peridotites. The positive correlation in Re/Ir–LOI space corroborates Re input during the later serpentinization process. The 187Os/188Os ratios of the dunites range from 0.11907 to 0.14493. Phanerozoic Re-depletion (melt depletion) ages of ca. 535–129 Ma are recorded in the Gibbs Island dunites, except for one with a Mesoproterozoic Re-depletion age of ca. 1.2 Ga. Since there exists serpentinization-related perturbation of Re, the ages provide minimum time estimates for melt depletion events. The early Paleozoic melt depletion is inferred to have occurred at a very early stage of Antarctic Peninsula formation in response to plate convergence along the margin of Gondwana, whereas the Mesoproterozoic Re-depletion age reflects convecting mantle heterogeneity unrelated to any nearby crust-forming events. The petrographic characteristics of the chromites and highly depleted nature of the dunites are attributed to melt–peridotite reaction in a subduction zone setting. A feasible interpretation for the dunite formation is that the mantle had experienced two stages of melting with the final stage occurring along the Gondwana continental margin in the subduction zone setting. Resultant highly refractory lithospheric mantle was later displaced and dispersed during the Gondwana breakup. Widespread existence of the dunite may be attributed to multi-stage melt depletion along the continental margin.

Abstract Antarctic lakes have generally simple periphyton communities when compared with those of lower latitudes. To date, assessment of microbial diversity in Antarctica has relied heavily on traditional direct observation and cultivation methods. In this study, sterilized cotton baits were left submerged for two years in two lakes on King George Island and Deception Island, South Shetland Islands (Maritime Antarctic), followed by assessment of diversity by metabarcoding using high-throughput sequencing. DNA sequences of 44 taxa belonging to four kingdoms and seven phyla were found. Thirty-six taxa were detected in Hennequin Lake on King George Island and 20 taxa were detected in Soto Lake on Deception Island. However, no significant difference in species composition was detected between the two assemblages (Shannon index). Our data suggest that metabarcoding provides a suitable method for the assessment of periphyton biodiversity in oligotrophic Antarctic lakes.
