SummaryOriginally described last century from New Mexico, U.S.A., Worthen's Sparrow Spizella wortheni has subsequently been recorded from just eight states in Mexico centred on the interior of the north-east of the country. Records during the last 30 years originate from just Coahuila and Nuevo León, with those during the last 10 years exclusively from two small areas in south-eastern Coahuila and western Nuevo León: it appears that this poorly known species has been suffering a range contraction owing to the widespread destruction of its shrubby (mesquite or yucca-juniper) grassland habitat. Little detail is known of its specific requirements, local movements, or even its distribution, and it is proposed that Worthen's Sparrow be formally recognized as a threatened species.Originalmente descrito el siglo pasado a partir de ejemplares procedentes de Nuevo Méjico, U.S.A., Spizella wortheni ha sido posteriormente citado en ocho estados mejicanos, todos en el interior del noreste del país. The new material on which this paper is based has lately been received through Mr. D. Ferguson, who recently investigated the geology of the island, and collected the rocks described in an earlier paper. It consists of twenty-seven rock specimens from the south-eastern end of the island, between Cape Disappointment and Cooper Island, and nine specimens from Gold Harbour on the north-east coast between Cooper Island and Royal Bay. All these were collected by the staff of the South Georgia Co., Ltd., under the instructions of Mr. Th. E. Salvesen, managing director, of Leith.

SUMMARYThe objective of this study was to measure the association between deprivation and incidence of 21 infectious diseases in the North East of England (2007–2011). We used count regression models with the Index of Multiple Deprivation and population/landscape data for small areas (~1500 persons). Deprivation significantly predicted incidence (P < 0·05) for 17 infectious diseases. The direction of association was broadly consistent within groups: increased incidence with increased deprivation for all three bloodborne viruses, 2/3 invasive bacterial diseases, 4/5 sexually transmitted infections (STI) and tuberculosis (TB); decreased incidence with increased deprivation for 5/6 infectious intestinal diseases (IID) and 2/3 vaccine-preventable diseases. Associations were removed for all but one IID (E. coliO157 infection) after accounting for recent foreign travel. Hepatitis C virus, TB and STI are priority infections for reduction of inequalities associated with deprivation in the North East of England.

IntroductionThe town of Ningi is located on the western edge of the North East State of Nigeria, about 25 km from the south-eastern corner of Kano State. Old Ningi town (about 50 km from the town's present site) was founded by a Kano Qur'anic teacher-scholar, Malam Hamza, and his followers in the middle of the nineteenth century. Malam Hamza is said to have fled Kano because of political and religious disputes with the Emir of Kano which resulted in a purge of the Malam class. Moving away from the centre of Kano power to the comparative safety of the Kabara hills and the non-Hausa people who lived in them, Malam Hamza was able to establish the separatism he and his followers desired. During this period the Kabara hills were the scene of slave-raiding and warfare, constantly threatened by the Hausa-Fulani emirates which surrounded them. Fighting from the hills, the people of Old Ningi, loosely allied with their neighbours, the Butawa, Warjawa, and others, were able to maintain their independence from Bauchi, Zaria, and Kano.

&lt;p&gt;The south-eastern part of the European continent is known as a region where the types of climate are hard to be delimited, being indicated by Trewartha since 1961 among the so-called Earth's Climate Problem regions of the world. This is given especially by its position at the merges of arid and cold climate of the temperate zone in Europe. Taking to account this aspect, it is not surprisingly that after almost 100 years of climate classification attempts, there is still no agreement regarding the climate type of Romania and its corresponding subdivisions. Even if a weak majority of the Romanian climatologists plead for a temperate continental climate, some others consider that Romania has a typically temperate transitional climate specific for central Europe. However, most of previous regionalizations are highly subjective with no proper quantitative assessment of climate conditions.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In our study a climate regionalization of Romania&amp;#8217;s territory is proposed, based on an objective approach. For this purpose, 9 monthly climate parameters extracted from interpolation gridded data sets (ERA-5 land and ROCADA) were used.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The regionalization was performed by mixing two objective methods. Firstly, all the 108 input variables were reduced at 8 major factors using factor analysis. Secondly, those factors were used in a k-means clustering method and a new scheme of climate regionalization of Romanian territory was obtained. Through this, we succeed to delimitate 8 different climate subtypes within Romania's territory which we aggregated firstly in 2 major zonal climate types: (i) temperate transitional climate (TTC) from maritime to continental type, extended in the north-east part of Romania and (ii) temperate orographically sheltered climate (TOSC) with 2 major subtypes. The first sub-type of TOSC is extended within the Carpathian mountain arch (an extension of pannonian climate) and the second one covers the romanian part of the region between Carpathian and Balkan Mountain (lower danubian climate). Besides these two zonal types the major landforms of Romania impose specific climate conditions: (iii) the Carpathian mountains and sub-mountains area have their own climate features (CMSC) with 3 climate subtypes (precarpathian, eastern Carpathian and alpine climates), while the (iv) Black Sea shapes the main climate conditions of the south-eastern side of the country especially along the coast with 2 climate subtypes (ponto-deltaic and western pontic type). The main features of these climate types/subtypes are presented in detailed in the study.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the meantime, the proposed climate regionalization covers partially the neighbor countries in an attempt to homogenize the different national perspectives on the climate types along the states boundaries in central and south-eastern Europe.&lt;/p&gt;

The town of Dolgelley lies slightly outside the main tract of gold-bearing country of Merionethshire, but it forms a convenient headquarters from which to visit the various gold-mines and auriferous lodes. The Dolgelley Gold-belt lies within the area covered by the quarter-sheets 27 N.E., 27 S.E., 32 S.E., 33 N.W., 33 N.E., 33 S.W., 36 N.W., 36 N.E. of the 6 inch Ordnance Survey maps of Merionethshire. It is on the north side of the estuary of the Mawddach, extending from the sea at Barmouth to the locality of Gwynfynydd on the north-east. The belt forms the south-eastern flank of a range of high ground sloping down to the south and south-east from the mountains of Rhinog, Diphwys, and Garn. It is drained by several tributaries of the Mawddach, of which the principal are the Afons Hirgwm, Cwm-llechen, Cwm-mynach, Wnion, Las, Gamlan, Eden, and Gain.

Abstract Aims To investigate the spatial distribution of self-harm incidence rates, their socioeconomic correlates and sex/age differences using data on self-harm presentations to emergency departments from The Manchester Self-Harm Project (2003–2013). Methods Smoothed standardised incidence ratios for index self-harm episodes (n = 14 771) and their associations with area-level socioeconomic factors across 258 small areas (median population size = 1470) in the City of Manchester municipality were estimated using Bayesian hierarchical models. Results Higher numbers and rates of self-harm were found in the north, east and far southern zones of the city, in contrast to below average rates in the city centre and the inner city zone to the south of the centre. Males and females aged 10–24, 25–44 and 45–64 years showed similar geographical patterning of self-harm. In contrast, there was no clear pattern in the group aged 65 years and older. Fully adjusted analyses showed a positive association of self-harm rates with the percentage of the unemployed population, households privately renting, population with limiting long-term illness and lone-parent households, and a negative association with the percentage of ethnicity other than White British and travel distance to the nearest hospital emergency department. The area-level characteristics investigated explained a large proportion (four-fifths) of the variability in area self-harm rates. Most associations were restricted to those aged under 65 years and some associations (e.g. with unemployment) were present only in the youngest age group. Conclusions The findings have implications for allocating prevention and intervention resources targeted at high-risk groups in high incidence areas. Targets for area-based interventions might include tackling the causes and consequences of joblessness, better treatment of long-term illness and consideration of the accessibility of health services.

The region from eastern Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh of India and the adjacent south-eastern Tibet and northern Myanmar seems to be one of the last frontiers not only for Meconopsis hunting but also for other botanical exploration. Although there remain political difficulties for foreigners to approach the unsettled border between India and China, including the famous Tsari valley with its prominently rich flora, which was visited by Frank Ludlow, George Sherriff, Frank Kingdon-Ward and a few other plant hunters before 1950, some botanical and horticultural treasures in this region have gradually been revealed to recent travellers. As a result of examining the photographs taken by these travellers and our own botanical field research in eastern Bhutan in 2014, accompaniedby subsequent herbarium studies, two species new to science are described. The first, from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet, has long been cultivated under the names M. grandis or M. grandis GS600, and has recently been described as M. grandis subsp. orientalis (Grey-Wilson, 2010). It is the national flower of Bhutan. However, the type of M. grandis from Sikkim belongs to a species quite distinct from the eastern populations and the latter is now described as a new species, Meconopsis gakyidiana. The second novelty, Meconopsis merakensis,is newly described from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh. In the past this species was confused with the closely allied M. prainiana. The two species are isolated geographically, M.prainiana being found only much further to the north-east, in south-eastern Tibet, including theTsari valley. The title of this article is based on a comparison made by Frank Kingdon-Ward of Meconopsis flowers with butterflies in Tibet (see below).

An estimated total of over 20,000 feet of Palaeozoic sediments accumulated in the Bonaparte Gulf Basin. The thickest known continuous section is that in Bonaparte No. 1 Well, abandoned at 10,530 feet in Upper Devonian sandstone and shale. Rocks of the Basin margins are mainly sandstones and limestones (in part reef), whereas a thick shale section has been discovered in the deeper parts. Data from recent seismic surveys indicate that the seaward extension of the Basin is considerable and that a thick pile of sediments is preserved there.The Bonaparte Gulf Basin formed as a result of subsidence of the north-eastern part of the Kimberley Block along fault lines associated with the Halls Creek Mobile Zone. This zone borders the south-eastern margin of the Basin and trends north-east. One basement block, represented by the presentday Pincombe Range, remained relatively high. The Bonaparte Gulf Basin can be divided into two subsidiary basins, the Carlton Basin to the west and north-west and the Burt Range Basin in the east and south-east. The Pincombe Range separates the two.Marine sediments were deposited in the Carlton Basin during the Middle and Upper Cambrian, Lower Ordovician, Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous epochs. Angular unconformities have been mapped between the Lower Ordovician and Upper Devonian rocks, and between Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous rocks. In the Burt Range Basin, deposition began in the Upper Devonian and continued with minor breaks through the Lower Carboniferous. Faults along the south-eastern margin were active through this period and affected the character of the sediments.Permian sediments are widely distributed and lie with unconformity on older units.

In total, 41 species of native rodents have been recorded from Queensland, more than for any other State or Territory in Australia. Assessments of status for these species, using information on patterns of distribution and abundance, indicate that 21 species remain common, 3 are rare, 2 are vulnerable, 7 are endangered and 8 are presumed extinct. Comparisons of body weights, habits and habitats revealed no differences between common and threatened species, but species with broad diets have tended to remain common compared with dietary specialists. South-eastern Queensland has relatively more threatened and extinct species combined than the richer north-east, while species that occur or occurred in two or more regions are more likely to have remained common than those that occurred in one region only. All 12 extant rare and threatened species appear to be afflicted by one or more threatening processes, with only seven of these having ranges that coincide with reserved land. Although native rodents have fared better in Queensland than in other, principally southern States, their status leaves no room for complacency for future management. We propose several measures for survey, research, management and education to assist progress toward conservation goals.

Correa lawrenceana Hook. is a widespread species in south-eastern Australia with eight recognised varieties. The Tasmanian variety, var. lawrenceana, is morphologically diverse. The present study uses multivariate morphometrics, including cluster, ordination and canonical discriminant analyses of samples of all recognised varieties of C. lawrenceana to assess whether more than one Tasmanian form warrants taxonomic recognition. These analyses showed that (1) var. lawrenceana can be divided into two well discriminated groups that are both endemic to Tasmania, a glabrescent form from the north-east and a hirsute form from the western, central and south-eastern regions, (2) the glabrescent form matches the type of C. lawrenceana and thus retains the name var. lawrenceana, and the hirsute form matches the type of C. lawrenceana var. ferruginea Hook.f. that is reinstated. The two varieties are separated geographically except in a small area around Deloraine in the north where intermediate morphological forms occur. The density of trichomes on the abaxial leaf surface is important for distinguishing the two Tasmanian varieties. An updated key to all varieties of C. lawrenceana along with descriptions of the Tasmanian varieties is presented. Nomenclature of the Tasmanian taxa is discussed and C. lawrenceana, C. lawrenceana var. glabra Benth., C. lawrenceana var. glabra L.Rodway and C. ferruginea Gunn ex Hook. are lectotypified.
