This paper develops a stochastic model for comparing payments to U.S. corn producers under the U.S. Senate's Average Crop Revenue Program (ACR) versus payments under the price-based marketing loan benefit and countercyclical payment programs. Using this model, the paper examines the sensitivity of the density function for payments to changes in expected price levels. We also assess the impact of the choice of yield aggregation used in the ACR payment rate on the mean and variance of farm returns. We find that ACR payments lower the producer's coefficient of variation of total revenue more than does the price-based support, although ACR may not raise mean revenue as much. While corn farmers in the heartland states might still prefer to receive the traditional forms of support when prices are low relative to statutory loan rates and target prices, this outcome is not necessarily the case for farmers in peripheral production regions.

Abstract Purpose Studies to examine the impact of end-of-life (EOL) discussions on the utilization of life-sustaining treatments near death were limited and had inconsistent findings. This nationwide population-based cohort study determined the impact of EOL discussions on the utilization of life-sustaining treatments in the last three months of life in Taiwanese cancer patients. Methods This cohort study included adult cancer patients from 2012–2018, which were confirmed by pathohistological reports. Life-sustaining treatments during the last three months of life included cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intubation, and defibrillation. EOL discussions in cancer patients were confirmed by their medical records. Association of EOL discussions with utilization of life-sustaining treatments were assessed using multiple logistic regression. Results Of 381,207 patients, the mean age was 70.5 years and 19.4% of the subjects utilized life-sustaining treatments during the last three months of life. After adjusting for other covariates, those who underwent EOL discussions were less likely to receive life-sustaining treatments during the last three months of life compared to those who did not (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.80–0.84). Considering the type of treatments, EOL discussions correlated with a lower likelihood of receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (AOR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.41–0.45), endotracheal intubation (AOR = 0.87, 95%CI: 0.85–0.89), and defibrillation (AOR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.48–0.57). Conclusion EOL discussions correlated with a lower utilization of life-sustaining treatments during the last three months of life among cancer patients. Our study supports the importance of providing these discussions to cancer patients to better align care with preferences during the EOL treatment.

AbstractRecent advances in fluorescence microscopy have made it possible to measure the fluctuations of nascent (actively transcribed) RNA. These closely reflect transcription kinetics, as opposed to conventional measurements of mature (cellular) RNA, whose kinetics is affected by additional processes downstream of transcription. Here, we formulate a stochastic model which describes promoter switching, initiation, elongation, premature detachment, pausing, and termination while being analytically tractable. By computational binning of the gene into smaller segments, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the mean and variance of nascent RNA fluctuations in each of these segments, as well as for the total nascent RNA on a gene. We also derive exact expressions for the first two moments of mature RNA fluctuations, and approximate distributions for total numbers of nascent and mature RNA. Our results, which are verified by stochastic simulation, uncover the explicit dependence of the statistics of both types of RNA on transcriptional parameters and potentially provide a means to estimate parameter values from experimental data.

<p>We study performance of Islamic and conventional indices of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in the wake of financial crisis of 2008 and test whether Islamic indices were less risky than conventional indices. We make use of data of the six GCC markets as well as the Dow Jones Islamic Market Index GCC. The mean and variance of each of the indices are analyzed based on augmented GARCH models. The results show that the financial crisis impacted on the mean returns of Bahrain, the other indices remained unaffected. The financial crisis, however, impacted volatility in three GCC markets (Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE), while the impact on the remaining markets (Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar) and the Islamic index was insignificant. More interestingly, we show that the Islamic index did not exhibit lower volatility than its conventional counterparts.</p>

Abstract Introduction: The MiniMed™ 670G system was FDA-approved in 2016 for adults and adolescents ≥14yrs, and in 2018 for children ages 7-13yrs with T1D. Since then, use of the system has grown to over 180,000 people in the U.S. The glycemic control benefits of real-world MiniMed™ 670G system Auto Mode use in the U.S. were assessed. Methods: System data (aggregated five-minute instances of sensor glucose [SG]) uploaded from March 2017 to July 2019 by individuals (N=118,737) with T1D and ≥7yrs of age who enabled Auto Mode were analyzed to determine the mean % of overall time spent &lt;54mg/dL/&lt;70mg/dL (TBR); between 70-180mg/dL (TIR); and &gt;180mg/dL/&gt;250mg/dL (TAR). The impact of Auto Mode was further assessed in a sub-group of individuals (N=51,254) with, at least, 7 days of SG data for both Auto Mode turned ON and turned OFF. The % of TIR, TBR and TAR, and the associated glucose management indicator (GMI) were evaluated for the overall OFF (2,524,570 days) and ON (6,308,806 days) periods, and across different age groups. Results: System data TIR was 71.3%; TBR was 0.4% and 1.9%, respectively; and TAR was 26.8% and 6.2%, respectively. User-wise data of Auto Mode OFF versus ON showed a mean of 70.3% of the time spent in Auto Mode, that TIR increased from 60.9% to 69.9%; and that both TBR and TAR decreased. For those 7-13yrs (N=1,417), TIR increased from 48.7% to 61.5%; TBR increased from 0.5% to 0.6% and from 2.0% to 2.2%, respectively; and TAR decreased from 49.3% to 36.3% and from 20.5% to 13.0%, respectively. For those 14-21yrs (N=4,194), TIR increased from 51.0% to 61.5%; TBR decreased from 0.7% to 0.6% and from 2.3% to 2.0%, respectively; and TAR decreased from 46.7% to 36.5% and from 18.5% to 12.5%, respectively. For those ≥22yrs (N=45,643), TIR increased from 62.2% to 70.9%; TBR decreased from 0.7% to 0.5% and from 2.6% to 1.9%, respectively; and TAR decreased from 35.2% to 27.3% and from 9.9% to 6.3%, respectively. The mean GMI decreased by 0.23% (overall), 0.48% (7-13yrs), 0.35% (14-21yrs), and 0.22% (≥22yrs), respectively, with Auto Mode ON versus OFF. Discussion: In over 6 million days of real-world MiniMed™ 670G system Auto Mode use in the U.S., TIR of a large pediatric and adult population with T1D improved by 9% compared to when Auto Mode was OFF, which was comparable to or exceeded the TIR observed in the smaller pivotal trials. These results further support outcomes of the pivotal trials and increased glycemic control with system use.

This paper describes techniques to characterize the number of singletons in the setting of the generalized birthday problem, that is, the birthday problem in which the birthdays are non-uniformly distributed over the year. Approximations for the mean and variance presented which explicitly indicate the impact of the heterogeneity (expressed in terms of the Kullback–Leibler distance with respect to the homogeneous distribution). Then an iterative scheme is presented for determining the distribution of the number of singletons. The approximations are validated by experiments with demographic data.

The mathematical theory of quantitative traits is over one hundred years old but it is still a fertile area for research and analysis. However, the effects of selection on a quantitative trait, while well understood for the effects on the mean and variance, have traditionally been difficult to attack from the perspective of analyzing the probability density of the breeding values and deriving higher (third and fourth) moments as well as analyzing the impact of recombination. In this paper, the exact formula for the breeding value distribution after selection is derived and, using new integral tables, the first four moments are given exact expressions for the first time. In addition, the effects of recombination on the full distribution of breeding values are demonstrated. Finally, the changes of GXE covariance in the selected parent population caused by factors similar to the Bulmer Effect are also investigated in detail.

Background: Cord separation time has evolved as an important justification for recommending against the topical use of chlorhexidine on the cord. Objective: This present study was undertaken to determine the impact of cord cleansing with chlorhexidine on cord separation time and maternal acceptance of chlorhexidine in umbilical cord care. Methods:  Between April 2013 to July 2014, 340 newborns were randomly assigned within a tertiary level hospital in Bangladesh to receive 1 of 2 cord care regimens: clean and dry cord care (control) and single cord cleansing with 4% chlorhexidine. Results: The mean cord separation time in newborns of chlorhexidine group was significantly longer than dry cord care group (p < 0.001). Mother of newborns in chlorhexidine group more frequently reported “longer than usual” cord separation time. Overall satisfaction of mother with cord separation time was high (95.9%). Broadband commonly refers to Internet connection speeds greater than narrowband connection speed of 56kbs. Digital subscriber lines (DSL) and cable modems were the most popular forms of broadband in public use over the last 10 years. In 2004, over 80% of U.S. homes were equipped with cable modems, and up to 66% of U.S. households were able to receive DSL transmissions. It is expected that the impact of broadband technologies will continue to play an important role in the U.S. and the rest of the world. It is predicted that the number of broadband-enabled homes will exceed 90 million worldwide by 2007 (Jones, 2003). Canada and Korea currently are the two countries leading the way in broadband saturation. The following discussion focuses on the Canadian case of broadband development.

Complex networks are omnipresent in science and in our real life, and have been the focus of intense interest. It is vital to research the impact of their characters on the dynamic progress occurring on complex networks for weight-dependent walk. In this paper, we first consider the weight-dependent walk on one kind of transfractal (or fractal) which is named the weighted transfractal [Formula: see text]-flowers. And we pay attention to the first return time (FRT). We mainly calculate the mean and variance of FRT for a prescribed hub (i.e. the most concerned nodes) in virtue of exact probability generating function and its properties. Then, we obtain the mean and the secondary moment of the first return time. Finally, using the relationship among the variance, mean and the secondary moment, we obtain the variance of FRT and the scaling properties of the mean and variance of FRT on weighted transfractals [Formula: see text]-flowers.
