Background: Both oral and injectable hormonal contraceptives are the most popular type of birth control measures used in Bangladesh. Objective: The purpose for the present study was to see the effects of hormonal contraceptives on serum lipid profiles. Methodology: This was case-control study which was carried out in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2004 to December 2005 for eighteen (18) months. Women of reproductive age group who had given the history of taking low-dose OCP containing 30 meg EE plus 150 meg LNG were included as case group and women who were presented without the history of hormonal contraceptives use were included as control group. Blood was collected from each woman in fasting state and serum was sent for estimation of serum lipids profiles like serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL. Result: The study included 40 women (control) who were not using OCP and 40 women (case) who were using OCP for more than one year. Comparison of age between control (31.75±4.85 years) and case (30.43±5.44 years) groups showed no significant difference (p>0.05). No significant difference with raised cholesterol levels (207.50±3.54 and 254.71± 45.54 mg/dl) was reported. Comparison of normal (136.16±39.46 and 154.05±35.33 mg/dl) and raised (229.00±24.52 and 246.32±35.98 mg/dl) triglyceride levels between control and case groups did not statistically significant. Comparison of normal and raised HDL levels did not show statistically any significant difference in control (32.07±3.02 mg/dL) and case (32.48±1.76 mg/dL) groups. Mean (±SD) of normal and raised levels of LDL was significantly high in case group. Normal LDL level was 82.71±26.82 and 111.05±15.40 mg/dl and raised LDL level was 138.55±3.03 and 188.82±40.37 mg/dL. Conclusion: In conclusion use of low-dose OCP containing 30 meg EE plus 150 meg LNG significantly increases serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol levels but not HDL-cholesterol. Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign progressive expansile bone lesion that usually involves often located in vertebrae, long tubular bones and flat bones. A small percentage of aneurysmal bone cysts arise from the skull base. Skull base involvement is very rare. Here, we describe a 22-year young man presented with diplopia, right sided facial paresis and right sided sensori-neural hearing loss. CT scan and MRI showed a right petrous apex skull base mass that was confirmed as ABC in histopathology after surgical removal. Journal of Science Foundation, January 2020;18(1):25-28

Background: Recurrent laryngeal nerve is varied anatomically with inferior thyroid artery. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to observe the anatomical variation of recurrent laryngeal nerve with inferior thyroid artery among Bangladeshi people. Methodology: This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck surgery at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Sylhet, Bangladesh from January 2004 to December 2004 for a period of one (01) year. Patients whose recurrent laryngeal nerve was identified during thyroidectomy due to various pathological conditions of thyroid gland were selected as group I. Again, the dead body which were undergone dissection were designated as group II. All the patients whose recurrent laryngeal nerve and inferior thyroid artery were identified during total, near total, sub-total, hemithyroidectomised or lobectomised were included in this study. Result: A total number of 32 patients were recruited for this study. On the left side nerve was found anteriorly in 2(10.53%), in between in 4(21.05%) and posteriorly in 13(68.42%). On the right side-nerve was found anteriorly in 7(30.43%), in between in 6(26.09%) and posteriorly in 10(43.48%). In this series nerve was seen posterior relation more than other two relations and anterior relation more on right side whereas posterior relation on left side, anterior relation more than in between relation on right side but reverse on left side. In group II On the left side nerve was found anteriorly in 2(6.25%), in between in 6(18.75%) and posteriorly in 24(75%). On the right side-nerve was found anteriorly in 8(25%), in between in 9(28.12%), and posteriorly in 10(46.88%). Conclusion: In conclusion each recurrent laryngeal nerve lies posterior to the inferior thyroid artery in the majority of the occasions whereas the nerve lies anterior to the branches of the inferior thyroid artery less commonly except right side of both study group. Schwannomas are encapsulated tumors arising from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath, and are usually solitary sporadic lesions. The schwannoma of the ilio-hypogastric nerve especially in the retro-petoneal space is very rare. We are reporting a case of the schwannoma of the left ilio-hypagastric nerve over the psoas muscle. The diagnosis was done by ultarsonogrsphy and MRI. The histopathological study confirmed the diagnosis. The tumour was excised through retro-peritoneal approach. By this approach total excision of the tumour with preservation of ilio-hypogastric nerve is possible. Journal of Science Foundation 2019;17(2):71-74

Background: Objective: The study was conducted to investigate the fish diversity and socio-economic profiles of the fishermen of Karatoya River in Panchagarh district in the Northern part of Bangladesh. Methodology: Pertinent information was collected from forty randomly selected fishermen from the study area who were directly involved in fishing in the rivers during the period of twelve months from July 2017 to June 2018. The data interpretations showed that 50 fish species under 8 orders and 17 families were recorded from the Karatoya River during the study period. Cypriniformes was found as the most dominant order constituting 48% of the total fish populationfollowed by Channiformes (6%), Sliuriformes(18%), Clupiformes (6%), Mastacembeliformes (6%), Perciformes (12%), Beloniformes (2%), Tenaodontifomres (2%). Fishes in this river are seriously affected by the various kinds of natural and manmade causes. Under this circumstance, a better understanding of the diversity and distribution of fishes in the Karatoya River is urgently needed. Result: In the study area the fishermen age range from 16 to 65 years. It was found that most of the fishermen (35%) illiterate though a small proportion completed primary level of education. 75% percent of the fishermen used their own tube-well, while 20% and 5% used government and neighbors’ tube-well, respectively. In the study area, 55% of the fishermen were far from power plants and the rest of them had (45%) access to electricity. Majority (45%) of the fishermen was 1-10 decimal land, while 17.5% had 11-20 decimal lands and 15% had above 40 decimal lands and significant proportion of fishermen depend upon village doctors (62.5%) for their health facilities. Forty five percent of fishermen were engaged in fishing as their main occupation, 40% in agriculture and 15% in daily labor. Conclusion: Fishermen of Karatoya River were mostly illiterate, poor income, lack of training exposure and lack of awareness about their health facilities and sanitation.
