In Iran, the availability of the protein supplements resources for ruminant animals is low. Therefore, protein enrichment of fibrous substrates such as sugar beet pulp (SBP) could make this by-product to be used as a protein supplement for livestock. Several workers have studied the effect of different fungi on the concentration of crude protein in the SBP (Lena and Quaglia, 1992; Shojaosadati et al, 1999). However, very little information is available in the literature regarding the effect of Neurospora Sitophila (NS) fungi on the nutrients digestibility as well as the protein quality of SBP for ruminants. Therefore, this experiment was carried out to study the changes in the chemical composition, the digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) and the protein degradability of SBP treated with NS.

This study deals with effects of pressing of ensiled sugar-beet pulp and of application of a chemical preservative on the quality of fermentation process. The experimental silages had a better sensory evaluation than the control ones. In silages treated chemically with a mixture of acids, statistically significantly (P < 0.01) higher dry matter content, lowest pH value, the value of lactic acid and the lowest content of all acids in dry matter were found after 180 days of storage from the beginning of the experiment. The statistically significantly (P < 0.01) highest lactic acid content (43.39 ± 1.25 g/kg DM) was determined in the control pressed silage. The highest LA/VFA ratio (1.40 ± 0.18) was calculated for non-pressed experimental silage (D – 3 l/t of KEM). As compared with untreated control the highest percentage (P < 0.01) of lactic acid and of all fermentation acids was found out in silage D treated with 3 l/t of KEM (58.18 ± 0.47 g/kg DM). Undesirable butyric and propionic acids were not found in chemically treated silage samples (C, D, E, F). However, the highest (P < 0.01) contents of butyric acid (26.37 ± 0.91 g/DM) and propionic acid (4.58 ± 0.78 g/DM) were measured in untreated non-pressed silage samples (B). The highest (P < 0.01) contents of acetic acid and ethanol were found in control silage samples. The quality of these silages was evaluated as very low.

SUMMARY1. The effects of 0·9 to 1·0 kg molassed sugar beet pulp cubes, supplemented with minerals and vitamins and with either 0, 3·0 and 7·8% urea, on the voluntary intake of oat straw (either 2·0 or 3·0% crude protein) were measured in two experiments with 250 to 300 kg British Friesian steers.2. Straw intake was increased by a maximum of about 20% when a total of about 165 g crude protein was supplied by the urea-containing sugar beet products.3. In one digestibility trial conducted with 385 kg steers, the inclusion in sugar beet pulp of urea equivalent to 89 g and 169 g crude protein/day comparably and significantly increased the digestibility of dry matter and crude fibre.

Previous studies (e.g. Galbraith, McCulloch, Scalfe, Keeling and Atkinson, 1987) showed that differences in growth and metabolic responses Were obtained in sheep offered diets based on barley compared with those offered sugar beet pulp. At similar intakes of dry matter, barley based diets gave faster live-weight gain and heavier carcasses Which contained greater Weights of crude protein and fat and a higher proportion of fat in the carcass than those based on sugar beet pulp. The differences in fat and protein deposition in the carcass are of particular interest particularly in the context of the greater content of cellulose and hemi-cellulose in the fibre component of sugar beet-based diets. The objective of the present study Was to investigate the response to diets based on sugar beet pulp and supplemented With varying proportions of barley. It was Intended to study the utilisation of the diets which differed in the content of fibre and starch and to provide information on whole body, carcass and selected metabolic and endocrine parameters.

The object of the investigation which has been described in the present communication has been to secure information concerning the feeding value of sugar beet pulp as produced at the present time in this country. Data have been obtained respecting:(1) The composition and digestibility of wet sugar beet pulp.(2) The composition of dried sugar beet pulp and the digestibility of this feeding stuff when fed to ruminants (a) in the dry condition, and (b) after preliminary soaking in water.(3) The composition of molasses-sugar beet pulp.Data have been given showing the amounts of sugar beet by-products which are becoming available for use on the farm.The commercial processes of drying wet sugar beet pulp, and the method of manufacture of molasses-sugar beet pulp, have been described.It has been shown that crude fibre (20.3 per cent.) and N-free extractives (65.7 per cent.) constitute together more than four-fifths of the dry matter of sugar beet pulp, the latter being deficient in respect of protein, ash and oil. The carbohydrate of sugar beet pulp is invested with, special interest, being mainly in the form of pectose. A short account of the chemistry of the pectic substances has been given.

Sugar beet pulp (SBP) is a by-product of the sugar industry in which the dietary fiber content ranges from 73% to 80%. Compared to cereal fibers mainly used in biscuit production, sugar beet fibers are gluten free and have a perfect ratio of 2/3 insoluble fiber. In this work, sugar beet pulp was extruded with corn grits (ratios of corn grits to sugar beet pulp in extrudates were 85:15, 70:30, and 55:45), and the obtained sugar beet pulp extrudates (SBPEs) were used for improving the nutritional quality of cookies. The wheat flour in cookies was replaced with SBPEs in the amount of 5, 10, and 15%. The influence of three factors (the percentage of sugar beet pulp in the SBPEs, the size of the SBPE particles, and the percentage of wheat flour substituted with SBPEs) and their interactions on the nutritional quality of cookies, as well as their physical and sensory characteristics are examined using the Box–Behnken experimental design. The addition of extruded sugar beet pulp (SBPEs) significantly increased the amount of total dietary fiber and mineral matter of cookies. On the whole, the addition of SBPEs increased cookie hardness, but the hardness decreased with an increase in extrudate particle size. Sensory characteristics (except for the taste) were the most influenced by extrudate particle size.

The once bred gilt system of production has a number of benefits in terms of feed efficiency and welfare, however the system relies on the production of a quality carcass and acceptable reproductive performance. Previous studies have indicated that welfare might be improved if gilts were ad-libitum fed a diet containing 60% Sugar beet pulp (Stewart et al 1993). There was a suggestion however that reproductive physiology may be put at risk using such a diet. The objective of this experiment was to identify differences in reproductive performance using two different energy sources in gestation and to manipulate nutrition during lactation to study the effect on carcass quality.

ABSTRACTSugar-beet pulp as normally produced in Great Britain contains about 400 g molasses per kg dry matter (DM). It has been demonstrated that either a reduction in the amount or even the full removal of the molasses did not affect the yield or composition of the milk of cows (e.g. Ronning and Bath, 1962; Hemingway, Parkins and Fraser, 1986). The dried, shredded pulp without molasses was, however, generally less palatable.

SUMMARYEffects of the correction of microbial contamination (using15N techniques) and of considering the comminution rate (kc) of particles in the rumen on effective estimates of the ruminally undegraded (RU) fraction and its intestinal effective digestibility (IED) were examined in a sample of dehydrated sugar beet pulp (DBP) generating composite samples (from rumen-incubated residues) representative of the chemical composition of RU. Tested fractions were dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM, tested only for RU), crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA). The study was performed on three rumen and duodenum cannulated wethers fed with a 2 : 1 (fresh weight basis) chopped oat hay-to-concentrate diet supplied at 40 g DM/kg BW0·75in six equal meals per day. The DBP showed sigmoid degradation kinetics: the fractional degradation rate increased by 5·8 times as time (h) increased from 0 to∞. Thekcrate (measured in the diet concentrate) represented 5·74% of the total rumen retention time of particles. As a result, the RU of DM was over-evaluated by 6·53% whenkcwas not considered. Microbial contamination of RU was high as in DM as in CP. Therefore, the overestimation of RU of DM was increased to 12·2% when this contamination was not corrected. The lack of this correction also led to large over-evaluations of RU and IED of CP and AA. As a result, the overestimation of the intestinal digested fraction was 40·9% for CP and 45·0% for total analysed AA. This overestimation varied largely among AA (from 18·9 to 88·7%). Corrected proportions of RU and IED were also variable among AA. Hypotheses on the causes of this variability are given. Resultant changes in the AA profile of the intestinal digested protein had some negative impact on the supply of essential AA and cysteine without affecting lysine. This problem is limited because the microbial protein synthesized from DBP fermentation in the rumen is largely predominant in the AA supply to the host.
