There is a strong need in the industry to develop lead-free piezoelectrics for sensors and actuators. Although these materials have become an important component of many electronic devices, it is very important for the industry to decarbonise ceramic technology, especially through the introduction of modern sintering technologies. Among the many piezoelectric compounds available, Calcium Barium Titanate (BCT) have been widely investigated because of its similar performance to lead-containing Lead Titanate Zirconate (PZT). In this paper, a modified Pechini method for obtaining ceramic Ba0.9Ca0.1TiO3 nano-powders is described. Deviation from the established procedure resulted in the precipitation of the solution or obtaining of a low-quality (poorly crystallized) product with numerous impurities. The samples of BCT materials were examined to find their ideal microstructures and structures; these factors were confirmed by their outstanding X-ray diffraction spectra and high piezoelectric constant values that are comparable to commercial lead-containing materials.

This paper presents on ionic conductivity of MG30-PEMA blend solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) prepared by solution cast technique. The analysis has shown that conductivity increases with the increasing salt composition. It is observed via x-ray diffraction analysis that the crystallinity of the sample decreased with the amount of salt composition as expected It is also observed that the dielectric value increases with increasing amount of LiCF3SO3 in the sample. Surface morphology revealed that ion aggregation occurred after optimum conductivity which has lowered the conductivity.

New aromatic polyamides and polyazomethines containing pendent pentadecyl chains were synthesized by polycondensation of pentadecylbenzene-1,3-diamine with (i) four commercially available aromatic diacids, viz., biphenyl-4,4′dicarboxylic acid, 4,4′-oxybisbenzoic acid, terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid, and (ii) dialdehydes, viz., terephthaldehyde, isophthaldehyde and a 50 : 50 mol% mixture of terephthaldehyde, and isophthaldehyde, respectively. Inherent viscosities of polyamides and polyazomethines were in the range 0.35–0.56 dL g−1 and 0.33–0.38 dL g−1, respectively, indicating the formation of medium molecular weight polymers. The presence of pendent pentadecyl chains in polyamides and polyazomethines led to an improvement in their solubility in organic solvents. Polyamides could be cast into flexible, transparent and tough films from their solution in N, N-dimethylacetamide while polyazomethines could be solution cast into transparent, flexible and stretchable films from their CHCl3 solution. 1H-NMR studies based on amide proton signals and azomethine proton signals indicated the presence of constitutional isomerism in the polyamides and polyazomethines. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited broad halo indicating that the polymers were amorphous in nature. X-ray diffractograms also displayed sharp reflections in the small angle region (2 θ ≈ 3°) indicating the formation of layered structure arising from packing of flexible pentadecyl chains. The glass transition ( Tg) temperatures of polyamides were in the range 169–215 °C while Tg values for polyazomethines were in the range 16–55 °C. The temperature for the 10% weight loss of polyamides and polyazomethines were in the range 430–460 °C and 425–440 °C, respectively, in a nitrogen atmosphere, which indicated their good thermal stability. Polyazomethines were also characterized by UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy and optical band gap ( Eg) values, calculated according to the maximum of the UV absorption, were found to be in the range 2.82–3.10 eV.

AbstractAdhesion of metals to ceramics is an area of extreme importance for packaging of electronic devices. In one of the several adhesion schemes that can be employed to promote adhesion between metals and ceramics, the metal is preferentially oxidized at the interface and there is solid solution mixing between the substrate and the oxidized metal at the interface. An example is the Ni/MgO system. Estimation of the extent of mixing at the interface is often difficult and time consuming. This work describes a simple non-destructive method to estimate the extent of interdiffusion between the oxides using a standard x-ray diffraction measurement. This technique relies on the changes in the peak shapes and positions as a function of the nature and extent of interdiffusion. The technique is precise enough to allow one to estimate interdiffasion coefficients in some oxide/oxide systems. The diffusion and intermixing phenomena in the NiO/MgO system will be examined as an illustrative example.

Thin film is a thin material that is resulting from the condensation of species through the deposition of atoms on the substrate. Thin films are usually used in the production of electronic devices, optical coatings, solar cells, and for decorative items. The bilayer of TiO2/ZnO and ZnO TiO2 thin films have some advantages such as can enhance the surface state and surface atomic mobility, which are useful for improving the photocatalytic activity. The motivation to a used double layer of ZnO and TiO2 is to enhance the properties and photocatalytic activity using the different deposition temperature between the layers. The structural of ZnO/TiO2 thin films were studied using X-Ray diffraction (XRD). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) was used to determine the surface morphology of ZnO/TiO2 thin films. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 thin films was analysed using the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) solution. The XRD analysis revealed that highest anatase crystalline phase for TiO2 growth with orientation (1 0 1), while the ZnO crystal phase, zincite occurred at the highest intensity with (1 0 1) orientation.. The bilayer TiO2/ZnO thin film had the highest reaction rate, K, which is 0.0972 h-1 for photocatalytic activity. The characteristics of bilayer TiO2/ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 thin-film is strongly influenced by the calcination temperature and the presence and combination between the two types of materials.

ABSTRACTA New method of the low resistivity α-Ta deposition technique has been developed. The sputtered Ta film deposited on TaMo alloy has bcc structure (α-Ta) in contrast to tetragonal of the Ta mono layer (β-Ta), and shows the resistivity as low as 22μΩ cm. The mechanism of this transformation is not explained by simple epitaxial growth. X-ray diffraction analysis and RBS analysis indicated that the TaMo alloy layer, due to Mo diffusion from the under layer, acts as a seed plane of growth. The Ta/TaMo layered film is suitable for Large Area Electronic devices for its low resistivity.

AbstractSingle-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotube blends (0 to 0.5 vol% ) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have been prepared using solution cast method and characterized. By acid treatment, it has been observed that nanotube has been well functionalized and uniformly dispersed into the polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has revealed that carbon nanotube alters the crystallinity of PVDF and thereby enhances the β-phase in PVDF. Experimental results have demonstrated that enhancement of β-phase is a function of carbon nanotube concentration.

In this paper, the composition and dielectric properties of Ba2Ti9O20-BaFe12O19system ceramics were studied. The ceramics were prepared successfully through the conventional ceramic processing. The x-ray diffraction results showed that all specimens were made of multi-phases, and the sintering temperature on the phase structure of the ceramics did not affected. The effects of sintering conditions and the components on the dielectric properties were investigated in detail. The investigations indicated that the initial Ba2Ti9O20/ BaFe12O19ratio had a great effect on the dielectric of the ceramics. The permittivity increased as the BaFe12O19content increased, whereas the dielectric loss decreased in the composite systems, which could be attributed to the variance in the formation of phases. At last, we suggested that further studies on magnetic properties should be considered for the application in electronic devices like LC filter.
