The need for deinking mills to reduce their fresh water consumption has resulted in higher loads of various contaminants in the process water. Lower recovered paper quality also leads to higher contamination levels in the mills. This higher load has an influence on achievable target brightness. The objective of the work was to determine and explain the main reasons for relatively poor deinked pulp quality or poor deinking potential based on the influence of recovered paper composition and process water quality. The process water parameters significantly affect the deinking potential of recovered paper. The test results showed the negative effects of increased water hardness. For standard recovered paper mixtures, flotation selectivity is higher with increasing flotation pH-value. Good results were realized for standard recovered paper with low hardness, low surface tension, and high pH-value. The results for recovered paper containing flexo newsprint could be slightly improved with low hardness, low surface tension, and low pH-value. The results of the test program using design of experiments showed interacting effects of pH-value and surface tension on luminosity and flotation selectivity.

Effects of pH value on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of super 13Cr tubing steel were investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution, that mechanics properties and fracture morphology and SCC resistance and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility index (kscc) were analyzed by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) stress corrosion cracking experiment method and σ-ε curve and SEM. the results Effects of pH value on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of super 13Cr tubing steel were investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution, that mechanics properties and fracture morphology and SCC resistance and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility index (kscc) were analyzed by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) stress corrosion cracking experiment method and σ-ε curve and SEM. the results showed that super 13Cr tubing steel has good properties of resistance stress corrosion cracking in acidic medium, effects of pH value on super13Cr tubing steel resistance stress corrosion was not very obviously in the acidic medium, with pH value decreased, super 13Cr tubing steel tensile strength decreased, elongation rate decreased, fracture area contraction ratio decreased, break time reduced, the tendency of the stress corrosion cracking increased. the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility index kσ and kε were all increasing, that increased degree of kε were obviously than kσ, effects of pH value on the plastic deformation of super 13Cr tubing steel were greater than tensile strength.

Many studies have drawn attention to the occurrence and concentration of toxic elements found in the fruiting body of mushrooms. Some edible mushroom species are known to accumulate high levels of inorganic contaminants, mainly cadmium, mercury, and lead. There are about 2,000 known edible mushroom species, but only 25 of them are cultivated and used as food. In Brazil, the most marketed and consumed mushroom species are Agaricus bisporus, known as Paris champignon, Lentinus edodes, or Shitake and Pleurotus sp, also called Shimeji or Hiratake. In this study, the concentration of cadmium was determined in Lentinus edodes mushrooms from different cities in São Paulo state and some samples imported from Japan and China. The analyses were performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after HNO3-H2O2 digestion. The results showed a lower concentration of Cd in the mushrooms cultivated in São Paulo (0.0079 to 0.023 mg.kg-1 in natura) than that of the mushrooms cultivated abroad (0.125 to 0.212 mg.kg-1 in natura). Although there is no tolerance limit for Cd in mushrooms in Brazil, the results show that Lentinus edodes mushrooms can be safely consumed.

Abstract Knowledge of pH and buffering capacity of raw fiber materials is important for understanding the effects of raw material on the curing rate of urea formaldehyde (UF) resin, used for panel manufacturing, especially with some less-desirable wood materials such as bark, top, and commercial thinnings. The effects of pH and buffering capacity as well as catalyst content on the gel time of UF resin were investigated. The results obtained from this study indicate that bark has a lower pH value as well as higher acid and alkaline buffering capacities than wood of the same species due to their extractives. The pH values of the raw fiber materials studied decrease with increased absolute and relative acid buffering capacity due to the increased absolute acidity mass in the solution. At lower levels of added catalyst, the effect of raw material pH on UF resin gel time is significant, while it is insignificant at higher catalyst contents. This may be due to the acidity of wood, which is the main acid catalyst source of the mixture at lower levels of added catalyst, while at higher levels, catalyst is the main source. With higher catalyst contents, all studied raw materials mixed with UF resin result in a longer gel time than does UF resin alone.

In the presence of acetic acid, the effects of pH, processing time, addition of Fe2+ and H2O2 on dye wastewater treatment were studied. Experimental results showed that in the presence of acetic acid, when the pH value was 4, the processing time was 30.0min, addition of ferrous sulfate was 4.8g/L, and addition of hydrogen peroxide was 56mL/L, the treatment effect was the best, COD removal rate reached 51.0%. Further studied of the effect of the presence of acetic acid on Fenton’s oxidation of dye wastewater, the results showed that without of acetic acid, the COD removal rate was higher than that with acetic acid. And the effect of Fenton's reagent on oxidation of dye substances was interfered by the presence of acetic acid.

The aim of this study was to optimize the adsorption performance of activated carbon (AC), derived from the shell of Penaeus vannamei prawns, on heavy metal ions. Inexpensive, non-toxic, and renewable prawn shells were subjected to carbonization and, subsequently, KOH-activation to produce nanoporous K-Ac. Carbonized prawn shells (CPS) and nanoporous KOH-activated carbon (K-Ac) from prawn shells were prepared and characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, and TEM. The results showed that as-produced K-Ac samples were a porous material with microporous and mesoporous structures and had a high specific surface area of 3160 m2/g, average pore size of about 10 nm, and large pore volume of 2.38 m3/g. Furthermore, batches of K-Ac samples were employed for testing the adsorption behavior of Cd2+ in solution. The effects of pH value, initial concentration, and adsorption time on Cd2+ were systematically investigated. Kinetics and isotherm model analysis of the adsorption of Cd2+ on K-Ac showed that experimental data were not only consistent with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, but also well-described by the quasi-first-order model. Finally, the adsorption behaviors of as-prepared K-Ac were also tested in a ternary mixture of heavy metal ions Cu2+, Cr6+, and Cd2+, and the total adsorption amount of 560 mg/g was obtained.

Batch tests were used to investigate the effects of pH and contact time on the adsorption capability of peat. The results indicate that adsorption of uranyl ions on peat increase with increasing pH from 1 to 5. However it takes longer contact time to reach the adsorption equilibrium with increase of pH from 1 to 5. The adsorption process can be described by type 1 of the pseudo-second-order kinetics excellently.
