The morphology and the growth mechanism of lithium borate crystals from the vitreous state have been studied for various compositions, X = B/(Li + B), from 0.62 to 0.75. Crystalline phases and morphology of grown crystals varied with the composition. Octahedral and/or spherical Li2B4O7 crystals are seen in the specimen with X = 0.62, 0.64, 0.67, and 0.68. The spherical crystal is composed of an octahedral core and fibrous crystals. The size of the core varied with the composition of the starting glass, X. The fibrous crystal growth is supposed to arise from the morphological instability due to the compositional variation caused by the solute pileup at the growth interface.

Crystallisation processes of amorphous Cu-film on Pd(001) substrate have been investigated by molecular dynamics method. It has been established that the formed structure has tetragonal distortions; the elastic stresses caused by dimensional misfit of crystal lattices of the substrate and the film lead to the formation of complex defect structure changing during the annealing.

Hollow hemispheric ZnO shells/cages are synthesized on graphite fiber via simple thermal evaporation process. The cage-like ZnO structures exhibit micron or submicron size and hollow hemispheric shape with polycrystalline shell made of the ZnO nanocrystals. Controlled time-sequenced growth experiment is conducted to interpret the growth process, which indicates that the growth mechanism of the hollow hemispheric ZnO shells/cages involves formation of Zn particles firstly, followed by oxidation of the outer surface of Zn droplets and meantime sublimation of the core Zn.

Abstract The paper presents the results of a study of the effect of irradiation with heavy Ar ions on the structural and optical characteristics of 4H-SiC. It has been shown that as a result of already single irradiation with Ar ions with an energy of 53 MeV with a fluence of 1٠1010 cm-2, at least 2 powerful local regions with negative deformation prevail in the structure of silicon carbide. Along with this, a region with positive deformation is also observed in the structure. The formation of localized clusters with negative and positive deformations, along with the undisturbed matrix, is accompanied by the formation of linear type defects that partially relieve stresses in the structure. It is assumed that the resulting complex defect structure upon irradiation with Ar ions provides the effect of gettering of point defects and leads to the quantum efficiency of 4H-SiC UV photodetectors at the level of the initial samples.

Core-shell-structured CdSe/SiOxnanowires were synthesized on an equilateral triangle Si (111) substrate through a simple one-step thermal evaporation process. SEM, TEM, and XRD investigations confirmed the core-shell structure; that is, the core zone is single crystalline CdSe and the shell zone isSiOxamorphous layer and CdSe core was grown along (001) direction. Two-stage growth process was present to explain the growth mechanism of the core/shell nanwires. The silicon substrate of designed equilateral triangle providing the silicon source is the key factor to form the core-shell nanowires, which is significant for fabrication of nanowire-core sheathed with a silica system. The PL of the product studied at room temperature showed two emission bands around 715 and 560 nm, which originate from the band-band transition of CdSe cores and the amorphousSiOxshells, respectively.
