Hypoxia remains a flight-safety issue in terms of aviation medicine. Hypoxia-awareness training has been used to help aircrew members recognize personal hypoxia symptoms. There is still no study, as yet, to establish the association of within-subject data between inflight hypoxia events and the altitude chamber. The main purpose of our study was to use paired subjects’ data on inflight hypoxia symptoms compared with those experienced during training. A questionnaire was developed to obtain information on military aircrew members in 2018. Among 341 subjects, 46 (13.49%) suffered from inflight hypoxia. The majority of the subjects detected ongoing inflight hypoxia on the basis of their previous experience with personal hypoxia symptoms or sensations in previous chamber flights. Of the top five hypoxia symptoms, the data revealed that hot flashes, poor concentration, and impaired cognitive function appeared both during the inflight events and during the hypoxia-awareness training. The occurrence rate of hypoxia symptoms was found to not be significantly different between the in-flight events and the past chamber flights through an analysis of within-subject data. Because the individual memory had faded away over time, fresher hypoxia awareness training is still mandatory and valuable to recall personal hypoxia experience for military aircrew members.

This chapter evaluates the meaning of objects inventoried and packed as emigrants prepared to leave Germany for Palestine after Adolf Hitler came to power. Private property has, for both the individual memory and the collective memory, a deep emotional significance. The exclusion of the Jews from German society started with the National Socialist policy of ‘Aryanization’, the expropriation of property. Many y émigrés had to abandon, to leave behind, their private dwellings. In the process, they lost more than the object itself. Around 1800, the British philosopher and legal theoretician Jeremy Bentham drew attention to the importance of the relationship between an object and its owner: ownership forms the basis of a hope. Thus, the threat of losing property is symbolic of the loss of all hope of a continued life in Germany and as a German. Ultimately, Aryanization and confiscation were a symbolic theft of identity. And in these cases, even the legal system was no longer capable of protecting property rights. Those who emigrated in good time were able to take at least some of their property with them.

O presente artigo se debruça sobre a obra da jornalista e escritora ucraniana/bielorrussa Svetlana Aleksiévitch, ganhadora do Nobel de Literatura de 2015. Composta por milhares de testemunhos traumáticos, a obra se propõe escrever a história do “pequeno homem soviético” de maneira sensível, dando à memória individual valor reconstitutivo da experiência passada, de modo ao componente “memória” ser associado à “verdade”. Assim, com um olhar literário, e não historiográfico, a autora opõe, política e existencialmente, a memória biográfica à “gloriosa história da Vitória soviética”. Assim, busca-se investigar metodologicamente os usos da memória enquanto fonte em sua narrativa e trazer, a partir de uma preocupação biográfica, corporal e sensível, problematizações linguísticas e epistemológicas para a escrita da história contemporânea.Palavras-chave: Svetlana Aleksiévitch; Memória soviética; Linguagem; Escrita da história.Abstract The present paper aims at reflecting about the work of the ucranian/bielorussian journalist and writer Svetlana Aleksiévitch, winner of the 2015 Nobel of Literature. Composed by thousands of traumatic testimonials, her book proposes to write the history of the “little Sovietic man” in a sensitive way, giving the individual memory a reconstitutable value over the past experiences, in a way that “memory” is associated to “truth”. Thus, not within an historiographical perspective, but rather through a literary one, the author opposes, politically and existentially, a biographical memory to the “glorious history of the Soviet victory”. On these grounds, this paper targets to investigate methodologically the uses of memory as a source in Aleksiévitch’s narrative, and also to bring, through a biographical, corporal and sensible preoccupation, linguistical and epistemological questionings to the process of contemporary historical writing.Keywords: Svetlana Aleksiévich; Soviet memory; Language; Writing of history.

تُعتبر الصيغة السردية إحدى أهم المقولات المشكلة للخطاب السردي عموما، حيث تنتظم السرود وفق نمط حكائي معين يعكس الأسلوب المتفرد والمتميز لكل كاتب على حدة. وتُشَكِّلُ المجموعة القصصية "أنين الماء" للقاصة والروائية والشاعرة المغربية الزهرة رميج، بتعدّد صيغ خطابها وتنوع أشكال اشتغال الذاكرة فيها، كونا مُكثّفا وبالغ التعقيد. حيث تُزاوج القاصّة، في تشكيلٍ إبداعي قشيب، بين المحكي والمعروض تارة، أو تُعَضِّضهُما بالخطاب المُحوّل تارة أخرى، كما تُدمِجُ في صَوْغِ سرودها الذاكرة الفردية والذاكرة الجماعية، وتمزج الذاكرة الاجتماعية بالذاكرةِ الثقافيةِ والسياسيةِ. وسنحاول في هذه الورقةِ تقديم قراءةٍ مُركّزةٍ ومُختصرةٍ، في المجموعة القصصية "أنين الماء" للقاصة والروائية الزهرة رميج، لاستجلاء بعض الخصائص الفنية والجمالية التي تُميِّزُ سرود الكاتبة، مع التركيز بشكل خاص على أنماط الحكي والصِّيَغ السردية وتعدد أشكال اشتغال الذاكرة.The narrative version is one of the most important arguments for the narrative discourse, the narratives are organized according to a specific style of reflection. The novel "Anin almaa" by the Moroccan novelist Zahra Ramej, with its varied forms of speech and the diversity of its forms of memory, is an intensive and highly complex universe. Where the mating is intertwined in a creative form, between the narrator and the viewer, or alternating with the converted discourse. It also integrates the individual memory and the collective memory into its narratives, and mixes the social memory with the cultural and political memory. In this paper, we will attempt to present a concise reading of the novel "Anin Almaa" by Zahra Ramej, to explore some of the artistic and aesthetic characteristics that characterize the writer's narratives, with particular emphasis on narrative patterns, narrative forms and multiple forms of memory.

30 years have passed since the events of 1989 that led to the collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. In the paper the themes of social memory of political transformation in Poland in 1989 are discussed. The content of online statements collected from popular Polish news portals are analysed. When asking the question what events and experiences do Poles bring back when they think of 1989, I am interested in the relationship between the individual (biographical) memory and collective memory – the socially reconstructed knowledge of the past.

The article attempts to characterize the state of historical con- sciousness of the Germans at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21 st century. The article examines what factors influenced the formation of the “sacrificial narrative” in the collective memory of the Germans of the united Germany. The research is based on the publications in the German, Polish and Russian press, autobiographical works, interviews, diaries and memoirs of Gunther Grass, Gerhard Schroeder, etc., analyzes the works of art and filmography released at that time. Memories of the suffering of the German civilian population during the Second World War usually belonged to the individual memory or remained part of the German family history. True, the traumatic past was often used for political purposes, especially in the FRG in the matters related to the theme of exile. In the first decade of the new millennium, thanks to the changes in the cultural agenda – the release of a number of books and feature films, the plot of which was based on the suffering of the Germans, the traumatic past is at the center of public debate. However, the rethinking of the theme of the suffering of the German civilian population was met with a rather wary response in the global context, primarily from Poland and the victor countries.

The collective memory better than the individual memory holds the form (actions, words, formulas, scripts) than the matter (why it’s done). That is also true about aizgavieņs and масленица (Shrovetide), the archaic seasonal-rite feasts celebrated in Latgale. Nevertheless in the survey made by Rēzekne University College within the framework of ESF project “Linguo-Cultural and Socio-Economic Aspects of Territorial Identity in the Development of the Region of Latgale” (tilra.ru.lv) 1308 respondents (out of 1959, including 102 questionnaires in Russian) acknowledged Shrovetide as one of Latgalian identity features. In the list of 466 items (well-known people, places, traditions, realias, fi xed phrases, words etc) it holds 67th place. The aim of the work is to describe in comparative aspect the Latgalian and the Old- Believers’ traditions of the time before fasting, stressing syncretism of pagan, Christian (denominationally different) and ideological elements, using linguo-cultural approach. For the work published and unpublished materials of Latgalian folklore as well as the materials of Daugavpils University expedition about Old Believers and for comparing some materials of ethnographic studies in Pskov district (Мехнецов 2002; Прауст 2009) have been used. For all the Indo-European peoples, as they are agricultural people, the rhythm of life and work depends on the solar cycle; for an archaic human being it is the only system of reference frame. Acts of nature determine the quality of life all the year – the harvest should supply food till the next season. Preparing for the new agricultural season (the end of winter) is archaic New Year in modern understanding (Пропп 1995: 33), for archaic people to whom calendar doesn’t exist. Both at Shrovetide and at New Year’s Eve people read fortune about future spouse and the popular beliefs are very similar. Both Latgalians and Old Believers have popular beliefs connected with land tending at New Year eve fortunetelling, for example: at New Year’s Eve they went to crossroads to sow fl ax and later waited that at dream the future husband would come to tend land for flax. Other position: Масленица is the amount of summer solstice and other spring rituals (Клейн 2004: 312). For Slavic people the fertility of land is closely connected with prosperity and mercifulness of its inhabitants. Ritual food and wine is put for the shades, they are asked to come to fire, and they are asked for forgiveness, the graves are visited. For Catholics this time is not the time of commemorating the dead, so Latgalians encourage the growth of the most important for their culture plant – flax – with ritual actions. Most popular beliefs put down in Latgale are related to riding down a hill in a sledge as far as possible or with a horse travel far from home – so the flax grow as long as those ridings. In Latgale not only traditional sledges, but also ladonkys and skretels are used for riding. Ladonkys is a sleigh cut from ice with a hole for a rope and a groove for sitting, where a blanket is put. Seretels is a stake put in low wet place (to freeze in winter) in autumn to which at Shrovetide a pole is attached so the sleigh could be tied to it and spins round. The parade of disguised develop the topic of fertility in a social context. For Shrovetide a superfluity is typical both in entertainment and in food, but the timeline is strictly kept up. Latgalians prepare mainly meet dishes. They eat nine or twelve times and each time they eat meet. Slavic people celebrate Shrovetide for a week, they taste fat dishes, but they don’t eat meet at that time. The symbol of the Shrovetide menu is a pancake, which is the most ancient flour dish and the dish of Cult of the dead, it symbolizes prosperity and satiety. The Shrovetide menu of Latgalians is also unimaginable without it. Catholic fasting starts exactly at midnight of Ash Wednesday when merry-making and easy- time stops. Old-Believers fasting starts on Monday. Archaic ceremony is getting forms of mass events, since even in the conditions of Soviet ideology beginning since 50s of the 20th century, масленица has been celebrated as a farewell to winter with well-known for children Grandfather Frost (Дед Мороз) and The Snow Maiden(Снегурочка), with singing songs, playing games, horse races and horse- riding. Since 90s of 20th century all national groups living in Latgale have been integrated in the celebration of Shrovetide. In 1995 the public disguise event Daugavpils International Masque Festival has been launched where not only local national groups, but also guests from abroad demonstrate their national traditions. The celebration of Shrovetide has got the forms of mass cultural events emphasising its connection to certain place or specific aim of the initiators, for example: the songfest “Aizgavēnī cīmā braucam” (“In Shrovetide we vent on a visit”) of quires and folk companies in Vabole, the meeting of amateur theatres “Aizgavēņa grīztovōs“ (“In the gin-pole of Shrovetide”) in Līvāni (2011), the meeting of performance companies of Rēzekne Schools “Griešanās Aizgavēnī“ (“Rotation in Shrovetide”), “Aizgavieni” (“Shrovetide”) in Baltinava Secondary School; at the same time the restriction of social tradition as well as professional accomplishment can be traced.

Tuvia Ruebner’s postcard poems undermine the stereotypical, commercial image that tourist postcards wish to create. The name of the poem and the structure hint at such postcards, but attempt to change their appearance, to broaden the limits of the present, and integrate the past into it. The poet offers a memento that combines presence and absence, what is visual and what is verbal, and an inner and an outer reality. The individual memory is thus woven into a collective memory. These poems offer a sober worldview where Europe turns out to be the source of pain and longing, alongside great joys and pleasures. Ruebner’s postcard poems subvert the normative boundaries and binary divisions, providing the reader with a deeper look at human nature, and at the workings of memory.

In the works of Ludwig Bauer, a significant place is given to the autobiographical memory of the past, strongly connected with the discourse of identity, lost childhood, collective amnesia; it is related to body memory, place memory, and in the characters’ biographies there is usually present (overt or covert) Plato’s eikon (seen as a trace imprinted on the psyche and the mind), whose finding and explaining stimulates the plot and the story. Community memory is stored (A. Assmann) in the individual memory of its members. The aim of the proposed topic is to explore — with the use of interdisciplinary, methodological achievements in the field of memory discourse — the hermeneut-ics of L. Bauer’s selected works. As a result, the disquisition provides an analysis of literature in the process of forming memory and identity in the area of the former Yugoslavia, as well as literature as a medium of memory and “distinctive symbol system” (B. Neumann) in the whole culture of memory.

In analysing the symbolic language of Holocaust memorials, the author uses the concept of lieux de mémoire, elaborated by the French historian Pierre Nora. Nora highlights the essential differences, even rupture, between history and memory and the growing importance of lieux de mémoire, places of memory that lie between memory and history. The task of these places is to return the event to the present, reviving it in both the individual memory and the memory of society. Therefore, a memorial can also be considered a lieu de memoire. Moreover, the memorial is a more complicated case with material, symbolic and functional significance, a lieu de mémoire and a historical text with changing relations between them. The paper will briefly describe the basic principles of Holocaust iconography and the history of the development of Holocaust memorials as a new genre of commemorative art. The author will look at the development of this genre in Latvia using the example of memorials dedicated to victims of Nazism in Vidzeme. The monument’s symbolic language and whether it has been influenced by the specific place and events or whether artists have followed a specific iconographic canon will be explained. The examples will also be considered from the point of view of the dialectics between a place of memory and a historical text, mentioned above.
