This study presents the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale - Revised (ASAS-R). The sample was made up of 627 subjects (69.8% women) aged between 18 and 88 years (mean = 38.3; SD = 13.26) from 17 Brazilian states. Exploratory factor analysis of part of the sample (n1 = 200) yielded a three-factor solution which showed adequate levels of reliability. Two confirmatory factor analyses of the other part of the sample (n2 = 427) tested both the exploratory and the original model. The analysis of convergent validity using the Subjective Happiness Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Version 2 (SF-36v2) demonstrated adequate levels of validity. A significant correlation was found between levels of self-care agency and age, level of education and income. The analysis of sample members with chronic disease (n = 134) showed that higher levels of self-care agency indicated lower levels of negative impact of the chronic illness in the individual's everyday life.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research was to predict the contribution of spiritual and emotional intelligence towards the purpose in life of OSF retired nuns. The participants were 39 nuns. This correlation study used purpose in life scale, spiritual intelligence scale, and emotional intelligence scale to collect data. The data was analyzed with partial correlation and linier multiple regression. Spiritual and emotional intelligence was positively related to the purpose in life ( r = 0,406 ; p <0,05).  The contribution of spiritual and emotional intelligence was 16,4%. It means that other variables such as sex, knowledge, motivation, age, family environment, and other environment contributing 83,6%. The researcher concluded that: First, the purpose in life of retired nuns can be predicted by spiritual and emotional intelligence; Second, spiritual intelligence supports the purpose in life of retired nuns; Third, emotional intelligence supports the purpose in life of retired nuns. Keywords: spiritual intelligence, emotional intelligence, purpose in life

The aim of the present study was to investigate the meaning and purpose of life in fifty-two bereaved parents whose sons fell during active military service two or eleven years after their loss, compared to fifty non-bereaved parents, who served as a control group. Participants individually completed the Purpose-in-Life Test and the Meaning-in-Life Scale. Analysis of the results indicated that both bereaved parents received lower scores on both measures compared to the control group. No significant differences were found between parents whose son fell two or eleven years previous to the study. Clinical implications for treating this “at risk” population are discussed.

Reporters of out-of-body experiences ( n = 21) and nonreporters ( n = 159) showed no significant differences on the Spheres of Control Scale, Self-efficacy Scale, and Purpose in Life Scale. However, reporters of out-of-body experiences showed significantly greater belief in Psi, Spiritualism, and Extraordinary Life Forms than nonreporters.
