Abstract Exciton physics in two-dimensional semiconductors are typically studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy. However, this technique does not allow for direct observation of non-radiating excitonic transitions. Here, we use low-temperature photocurrent spectroscopy as an alternative technique to investigate excitonic transitions in a high-quality monolayer MoS2 phototransistor. The resulting spectra presents excitonic peaks with linewidths as low as 8 meV. We identify spectral features corresponding to the ground states of neutral excitons ($${\mathrm{X}}_{1{\mathrm{s}}}^{\mathrm{A}}$$ X 1 s A and $${\mathrm{X}}_{1{\mathrm{s}}}^{\mathrm{B}}$$ X 1 s B ) and charged trions (TA and TB) as well as up to eight additional spectral lines at energies above the $${\mathrm{X}}_{1{\mathrm{s}}}^{\mathrm{B}}$$ X 1 s B transition, which we attribute to the Rydberg series of excited states of XA and XB. The intensities of the spectral features can be tuned by the gate and drain-source voltages. Using an effective-mass theory for excitons in two-dimensional systems we are able to accurately fit the measured spectral lines and unambiguously associate them with their corresponding Rydberg states.

Optical transitions from two microwave discharge excited states of argon have been observed using cavity ring-down spectroscopy. These transitions originate on the high-lying levels, 3d[1/2] 1° and 3d[3/2] 2° , and terminate on the nf ′[5/2] Rydberg (n = 8 to 22) levels, which, except for n = 8, lie between the 2P3/2 and 2P1/2 ionization thresholds. In total, 24 such spectral lines have been observed. The quantum defect for the f ′ series has been measured and is compared to previously measured values. We observe a nearly threefold jump in line width in going from n = 8 to n = 9, below and above the 2P3/2 threshold, respectively. The line widths are broad and increase monotonically with n (above 9), in contrast to the narrowing of line widths usually observed. We cannot attribute this to a single source but conclude that collisional, quasielastic l-mixing of the nf ′[5/2] Rydberg states plays a significant role.

Heterogeneous perturbations 2E+ ~ 2Π of largely different magnitudes are observed with high resolution in the vacuum-ultraviolet absorption and in the infrared emission spectrum of the NO molecule. The rotational interactions between 2Σ+ Rydberg states and levels of the B2Π non-Rydberg state are shown to be "configurationally forbidden", but produced by the configuration interaction between the non-Rydberg levels and 2Π Rydberg states. The latter together with the 2Σ+ Rydberg states form p complexes. In this way the interactions display the l uncoupling in the complexes; they can be evaluated theoretically and can be analyzed fully. The cases of the strong interactions D2Σ+(v = 3) ~ B2Π(v = 16)and D2Σ+(v = 5) ~ B2Π(v = 21) and of the weaker D2Σ+(v = 1) ~ B2Π(v = 11), all three observed as perturbations in ε bands crossing 3 bands, are discussed in detail. It is further shown that perturbations between γ bands and β bands as well as perturbations between analogous bands of higher principal quantum number are absent, and thus the assignment of the A2Σ+ and E2Σ+ states to the s Rydberg series is confirmed.

The electronic absorption and emission spectrum of BF has been photographed at high resolution from 900 to 11 000 Å. In this work, many new electronic states have been found and corrections have been made to earlier work. The ionization potential has been determined to be between 89 635 and 89 680 cm−1, with the most probable value being 89 650 cm−1. Tables of the vibrational and rotational constants of all the known states of BF are presented. All but two of the excited states of BF have been classified as Rydberg states and have been assigned to Rydberg series. The interactions between the various Rydberg states are discussed.

Abstract We investigate the Rényi entropy of the excited states produced by the current and its derivatives in the two-dimensional free massless non-compact bosonic theory, which is a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We also study the subsystem Schatten distance between these states. The two-dimensional free massless non-compact bosonic theory is the continuum limit of the finite periodic gapless harmonic chains with the local interactions. We identify the excited states produced by current and its derivatives in the massless bosonic theory as the single-particle excited states in the gapless harmonic chain. We calculate analytically the second Rényi entropy and the second Schatten distance in the massless bosonic theory. We then use the wave functions of the excited states and calculate the second Rényi entropy and the second Schatten distance in the gapless limit of the harmonic chain, which match perfectly with the analytical results in the massless bosonic theory. We verify that in the large momentum limit the single-particle state Rényi entropy takes a universal form. We also show that in the limit of large momenta and large momentum difference the subsystem Schatten distance takes a universal form but it is replaced by a new corrected form when the momentum difference is small. Finally we also comment on the mutual Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals in the excited states of the two-dimensional free non-compact bosonic theory.

Poly(ʟ-lactide) (PLLA) films, even of high thickness, exhibiting co-crystalline and crystalline α phases with their chain axes preferentially perpendicular to the film plane (c⊥ orientation) have been obtained. This c⊥ orientation, unprecedented for PLLA films, can be achieved by the crystallization of amorphous films as induced by low-temperature sorption of molecules being suitable as guests of PLLA co-crystalline forms, such as N,N-dimethylformamide, cyclopentanone or 1,3-dioxolane. This kind of orientation is shown and quantified by two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (2D-WAXD) patterns, as taken with the X-ray beam parallel to the film plane (EDGE patterns), which present all the hk0 arcs centered on the meridian. PLLA α-form films, as obtained by low-temperature guest-induced crystallization, also exhibit high transparency, being not far from those of the starting amorphous films.
