A series of core–shell structure materials based on Ln-dpa complex and silica are prepared and the complex coating are generated on the surface of silica pheres successfully. The SiO2@Ln-dpa exhibits excellent luminescence properties. Furthermore, SiO2@Eu-dpa possesses highly selective and sensitive for acetone and Cu2+.

Four luminescent lanthanide–organic frameworks (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+ and Dy3+), isostructural to MOF-LIC-1(Gd), are assembled. Multiple colors are obtained for the system and white-light emission is realized by the single component Sm(iii) framework. Most interestingly, Eu-MOF performs highly selective and sensitive luminescence sensing of Al3+.

Sm3+, Ce3+ codoped Al2O3–La2O3–SiO2 glasses were prepared and their luminescence properties were characterized. Blue-cyan to orange-red tunable luminescence was observed from these glasses with different excitation wavelengths ranging from 385 to 410 nm. White light emission with internal luminescence efficiency 42% has been observed using commercially available purple light-emitting-diode excitation. The energy transfer between Ce3+ and Sm3+ has also been investigated from fluorescence decay curves and spectral properties.

Multi-component hybrids based on zeolite L/A are assembled by an inside–outside double modification route for ZA/L with lanthanide complexes. Some of them display white or near-white light emission. Furthermore, selected above-mentioned hybrids are incorporated into polymer to prepare the luminescent films.

Solid state bright white-light emission, mechanochromism and ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Al3+ and pyrophosphate by a single organic molecule are demonstrated.
