The third-order NLO properties of A–D–A molecules originally derived from organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices are studied. The results show that NLO performance of planar molecule (O-IDTBR) is better than that of twisted molecule (IDFBR) in solution or film state.

Novel heteropentameric porphyrins-pyrene arrays, in which four meso-tetraphenyl porphyrins are linked to the center unit of pyrene by four acetylenyl bonds, were designed and synthesized. The newly synthesized heteropentameric compounds have been characterized by a wide range of spectroscopic methods. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of both the metal-free and zinc compounds of the three-dimensional arrays were investigated by Z-scan experiments, showing enhanced NLO properties compared with that of the porphyrin and pyrene monomers.

This study reports the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) stabilized pure and transition metals (Cu, Co and Mn) doped ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) and their electronic structures. The third-order NLO properties of pure and transition metals (Cu, Co and Mn) doped ZnS NPs were measured by [Formula: see text]-scan technique. From these measurements, the pure and doped ZnS samples exhibit negative nonlinearity i.e., self-defocusing. The open aperture [Formula: see text]-scan measurement shows saturated absorption within the medium. The prepared pure and doped ZnS samples exhibit nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text](cm2/W), nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficient of the order of 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]cm/W and nonlinear optical susceptibility of the order of 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]esu. The electronic structures of these ZnS NPs were investigated using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements at the C K-, N K- and Co L[Formula: see text]-edges. The C K- and N K-edges XANES spectra reveal the appearance of several spectral features in the range 285–290[Formula: see text]eV and 390–430[Formula: see text]eV respectively. The Co L[Formula: see text]-edge NEXAFS spectrum exhibits multiplet absorption lines similar to those of Co[Formula: see text] ions coordinated in tetrahedral symmetry with four sulfur nearest neighbors. These results clearly demonstrate that divalent Co ions substitute Zn sites. From the Raman spectra, the appearance of multiple resonance Raman peaks indicates that the prepared ZnS samples have good optical quality.

The second-order non-linear optical (NLO) response of organoimido-substituted hexamolybdates has been tuned from 218.61 × 10–30 to 490.10 × 10–30 esu. The dipole polarizabilities and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of organoimido derivatives of hexamolybdates have been investigated by using the time-dependent density functional response theory (TDDFT). The electron withdrawing ability of F (fluorine) has played an important role in tuning the second-order NLO response in this class of organic-inorganic hybrid compounds; particularly system 6 [Mo6O18(NC16H8F2(CF3)2I)]2– with the static second-order polarizability (βvec ) computed to be 490.10 × 10–30 esu. Thus, our studied systems have the feasibility to be excellent tuneable second-order NLO materials. The analysis of the major contributions to the βvec value suggests that the charge transfer (CT) from POM to organic ligand (D-A) along the z-axis has been enhanced with addition of F atoms at the end phenyl ring which directs head (POM) to tail (fluorinated ring) charge transfer. The computed βvec values have been tuned by incorporation of different halogen atoms at the end phenyl ring of organoimido segment. Furthermore, substitution of two trifluoromethyl (–CF3) groups sideways along with iodine (I) at the terminus of end phenyl ring in the organoimido ligand has a striking influence on tuning the optical non-linearity, as CT from POM to the organoimido ligand was significantly increased. These systematic small changes in molecular composition by substitution of different halogen groups leads to a tuning the NLO response; the so-called ‘ripple effect’ catches this point nicely. Thus, the present investigation provides thought provoking insight into the tuneable NLO properties of organoimido-substituted hexamolybdates.

A series of main-chain polyimides containing azo aryl with different substituted groups have been synthesized by a condensation of corresponding N,N-dichloroethylaminoaryl azo compounds with 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic bis-imide in an alkaline DMF solution, which have high thermal stability and good solubility in organic solvents. The third-order NLO measurements made with Z-scan technique at 532 nm indicate that the polyimides containing p-nitrophenylazo and nitrobenzothiazole azo group (P2 and P3) have larger third-order nonlinear absorption coefficient (ß) and the nonlinear refractive coefficient (n2).
