We report the facile synthesis of antibacterial polymersomes in pure water, which show good antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and can be sprayed in places which are susceptible to bacterial attack.

ABSTRACT DW-224a showed the most potent in vitro activity among the quinolone compounds tested against clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria. Against gram-negative bacteria, DW-224a was slightly less active than the other fluoroquinolones. The in vivo activities of DW-224a against gram-positive bacteria were more potent than those of other quinolones.

The first phytochemical investigation of Glycosmis puberula twigs led to the isolation and identification of a new quinolone alkaloid, glycosmispuberulone (1), along with ten known compounds (2–11). The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses and comparison with previously reported data. Their antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were also evaluated.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be prepared in a number of chemical techniques, which are not environmentally friendly. Biosynthesis of nanoparticles by plant extracts is currently under exploitation. In this work, we describe an eco-friendly technique for green synthesis of AuNPs from AuCl4 solution using the Houttuynia cordata leaf extract as reducing agent. The AuNPs were characterized using UV-Visible spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, FTIR and AFM. The UV-Visible spectra indicate a strong plasma resonance that is located at 535 nm. The antibacterial activity of AuNPs was performed on various gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The AuNPs showed more inhibitory activity on gram negative than gram positive bacteria.

Polyaniline(PANI) doped by natural acid(citric acid, salicylic acid or rosin acid)solutions was synthesized using aniline as monomer and ammonium peroxydisulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) as oxidant. The antibacterial activities of the PANI against Gram positive bacteria(Bacillus megatherium, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Staphylo-coccus aureus) and Gram negative bacteria(Bacillus coli) were investigated. It was shown that PANI doped by citric acid possessed the better antibacterial activity against the selected species of Gram positive bacteria and Gram negative bacteria than PANI doped by rosin acid. PANI doped by salicylic acid exhibited ascendant antibacterial activities against Gram positive bacteria, but it has little antibacterial activity against the Gram negative bacteria.

Crustins are widely distributed among different crustacean groups. They are characterized by a whey acidic protein (WAP) domain, and most examined Crustins show activity against Gram-positive bacteria. This study reports two Crustins, Al-crus 3 and Al-crus 7, from hydrothermal vent shrimp, Alvinocaris longirostris. Al-crus 3 and Al-crus 7 belong to Crustin Type IIa, with a similarity of about 51% at amino acid level. Antibacterial assays showed that Al-crus 3 mainly displayed activity against Gram-positive bacteria with MIC50 values of 10–25 μM. However, Al-crus 7 not only displayed activity against Gram-positive bacteria but also against Gram-negative bacteria Imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, in a sensitive manner. Notably, in the effective antibacterial spectrum, Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (ESBLs) and Imipenem-resistant A. baumannii were drug-resistant pathogens. Narrowing down the sequence to the WAP domain, Al-crusWAP 3 and Al-crusWAP 7 demonstrated antibacterial activities but were weak. Additionally, the effects on bacteria did not significantly change after they were maintained at room temperature for 48 h. This indicated that Al-crus 3 and Al-crus 7 were relatively stable and convenient for transportation. Altogether, this study reported two new Crustins with specific characteristics. In particular, Al-crus 7 inhibited Gram-negative imipenem-resistant A. baumannii.

The antibacterial activities of cobalt(II) complexes with two series of benzimidazoles were evaluated in vitro against three Gram-positive bacterial strains (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Sarcina lutea) and one Gram-negative isolate (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined for all the complexes. The majority of the investtigated complexes displayed in vitro inhibitory activity against very persistent bacteria. They were found to be more active against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. It may be concluded that the antibacterial activity of the compounds is related to the cell wall structure of the tested bacteria. Comparing the inhibitory activities of the tested complexes, it was found that the 1-substituted- -2-aminobenzimidazole derivatives were more active than complexes of 1-substituted- 2-amino-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazoles. The effect of chemical structure on the antibacterial activity is discussed.

The antibacterial sensitivity of some single, double and triple chain aroylhydrazine against gram positive and gram negative bacteria were performed by disc diffusion method. Most of the compounds showed appreciable antibacterial activity against different gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The single chain hydrazines are more active then double chain and triple chain hydrazine. Among the single chain aroylhydrazines studied only 4-n-hexyloxy benzoyl hydrazine is the most active. The significant activity of 4-n-hexyloxybenzoyl hydrazine and heptyloxybenzoyl hydrazine against gram positive and gram negative bacteria may be (formation of inhibition zone 8 to 22 mm with most of the test bacteria) due to their liophilicity of the bacterial cell membrane. Anti-microbial activity decreases as the number of carbon of single chain hydrazine increases (C6 > C7 > C8 > C9 > C10 single chain hydrazine). Double chain hydrazines (3, 5 or 3, 4) are more active than triple chain hydrazines (3, 5 > 3, 4 > 3, 4, 5 hydrazine).
