ABSTRACTGraphene oxide (GO) is one of the most attractive inorganic nanofillers in proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for its large specific surface area and high proton conductivity. The proton conductivity of GO nanosheet is known to be orders of magnitude greater than the bulk GO, thus it is essential to improve the dispersion of GO nanosheets in the PEM matrix to achieve higher conductivity. In this study, we report a facile and effective method to fabricate a GO/sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) composite membrane with well-dispersed GO nanosheets in SPEEK matrix by using electrospinning technique for direct methanol fuel cell application. The composite membrane exhibits improved proton conductivity, dimensional stability and methanol barrier property due to the presence of well-dispersed GOs. It is believed that the GO nanosheets can not only induce continuous channels for proton-conducting via Grotthuss mechanism, but also act as methanol barriers to hinder the methanol molecules from passing through the membrane.

Nafion-azole (benzimidazole, 1,2,4-triazole, 1,2,3-triazole) composite membranes were prepared by room temperature and autoclave solution processing for high temperature (above 100 °C) PEMFC. Among the various Nafion – azole composite membranes, Nafion – 1,2,3-triazole membrane showed excellent flexibility, thermal stability, and homogeneous structure. Nafion – 1,2,4-triazole composite membrane had high thermal and mechanical properties, and also showed high proton conductivity of 0.02 S/cm at the temperature of 160 °C under dry (N2) condition.

Proton conduction in crystalline porous materials has received much attention from basic scientific research through to practical applications. Polyoxometalates (POMs) can efficiently transport protons because of their small superficial negative charge density. A simple method for enhancing proton conductivity is to introduce NH4 + into the crystal structure, because NH4 + can form hydrogen bonds and function as a proton carrier. According to these considerations, NH4 + was introduced into the porous structure of A 2[Cr3O(OOCH)6(etpy)3]2[α-SiW12O40]·nH2O (A = Li, Na, K and Cs; etpy = 4-ethylpyridine) (I-A+ ) via topotactic cation exchange. The resulting compound, diammonium tris(4-ethylpyridine)hexaformatooxidotrichromium α-silicododecatungstate hexahydrate, (NH4)2[Cr3(CHO2)6O(C7H9N)3]2[α-SiW12O40]·6H2O, showed high proton conductivity and low activation energy under high relative humidity (RH), suggesting that protons migrate efficiently via rearrangement of the hydrogen-bonding network formed by the NH4 + cations and the waters of crystallization (Grotthuss mechanism). The proton conductivity and activation energy greatly decreased and increased, respectively, with the decrease in RH, suggesting that protons migrate as NH4 + and/or H3O+ under low RH (vehicle mechanism).

Membranes are made by doping and modifying the Nafion117 with Nano-silica(SiO2). The penetration and the proton conductivity of composite membrane are studied through gas chromatograph and electrochemical workstation. With the help of cross-section spectrum, it shows that the SiO2 particles can penetrate the internal membrane and the weight percentage is greater than 0.1% after doping and modifying the membranes of Nafion117, so the SiO2 particles has a very good combination with the substrate. The membrane which is handled by Sol on 60°C has high proton conductivity and high water retention performance in high temperature. The permeability coefficient of membrane which is handled by Sol on 60°C and by the other ways are 4.07×10-4cm2/s and 8.13×10-4 cm2/s respectively. It shows that the permeability coefficient of ethanol membrane is reduced by half after the Nafion117 membrane is handled by Sol on 60°C.
