Background. Knowledge regarding the relationship between writing kinetics and the difference among writing tasks is limited. Purpose. This study examined the differences in handwriting performance when doing tasks with different levels of challenge from both temporal and kinetic perspectives among children in four different age groups. Method. The cross-sectional design introduced a force-acquisition pen to detect differences of pen grip and writing kinetics among 170 school-age children doing writing tasks at different difficulty levels. Data were obtained on the force information of the digits and pen tip and the kinetic parameters to examine the coordination-and-control mechanism between the digits and pen. Statistical analyzes were carried out to indicate the differences in writing performance among groups and tasks. Findings. Statistical differences in the pen-grip forces, force fluctuation, and force ratio between grip and pen-tip forces were found when performing different writing tasks and among different age groups. Implications. The study provides an alternative method to explore how writing performance among school-age children can vary according to the difficulty of the writing tasks.

Equilibrium represents the motor capability responsible for the performance of virtually all functional movements. Thus, the importance of early diagnosis of equilibrium levels in boys and girls was recognized as the key factor for the prevention of motor deficits and muscles misbalances later in life. Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to show the difference between boys and girls aged 7‒10 years in the level of unilateral static balance of the take-off leg. Methods: Research was conducted at the Kvarner Athletics Club Rijeka, and it involved 80 children aged 7‒10 years (38 boys and 42 girls). Measurement of static unilateral equilibrium was obtained using Gyko Inertial System (Microgate, Bolzano, Italy). Three attempts were made in 20 seconds and two motor variables were observed: medio-lateral and antero-posterior trajectories of the body. For both variables, the arithmetic mean, the minimum and maximum score and standard deviation were calculated. Moreover, a non-parametric method of the Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine statistical significance between boys and girls. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Statistically, girls have significantly better results compared to boys, both in the medio-lateral trajectory variable (M_Sumg = 335.1, M_Sumb = 479.34) and the antero-posterior trajectory variable (M_Sumg = 291.14, M_Sumb = 411.71). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that girls aged 7‒10 years achieved significantly better results compared to boys in observed motor variables (medio-lateral and antero-posterior trajectory of the body), when performing a static unilateral take-off leg balance test. These results are consistent with previous research. Indications for such results stem from different perspectives, among which the most common one refers to the earlier maturation of the systems responsible for postural control in female bodies. Recommendation for further research is to conduct examination on a larger sample of subjects, in younger children (pre-school age) and with both legs.

Purpose In this study, the authors aimed to investigate how differences in language ability relate to differences in processing talker information in the native language and an unfamiliar language by comparing performance for different ages and for groups with impaired language. Method Three groups of native English listeners with typical language development (TLD; ages 7–9, ages 10–12, adults) and 2 groups with specific language impairment (SLI; ages 7–9, ages 10–12) participated in the study. Listeners heard pairs of words in both English and German (unfamiliar language) and were asked to determine whether the words were produced by the same or different talkers. Results In English, talker discrimination improved with age. In German, performance improved with age for the school-age children but was worse for adult listeners. No differences were found between TLD and SLI children. Conclusion These results show that as listeners' language skills develop, there is a trade-off between more general perceptual abilities useful for processing talker information in any language and those that are relevant to their everyday language experiences and, thus, tied to the phonology. The lack of differences between the children with and without language impairments suggests that general auditory processing may be intact in at least some children with SLI.

P300 Auditory Event-Related Potentials (P3AERPs) were recorded in nine school-age children with auditory processing disorders and nine age- and gender-matched controls in response to tone burst stimuli presented at varying rates (1/second or 3/second) under varying levels of competing noise (0 dB, 40 dB, or 60 dB SPL). Neural network modeling results indicated that speed of information processing and task-related demands significantly influenced P3AERP latency in children with auditory processing disorders. Competing noise and rapid stimulus rates influenced P3AERP amplitude in both groups.

Objectives. To explore the role of internal astigmatism (IA) in the growth of axial length (AL) in school-age children. Methods. Total astigmatism (TA), corneal astigmatism (CA), and AL of all children in Jing’an District 2nd Centre Primary School in Shanghai were measured. In IA, the difference between TA and CA was also calculated using vector analysis. The association of axial length with IA, genders, and age was analyzed using linear regression. The difference of IA between both eyes was also calculated. The AL between both eyes was compared using paired samples t-test when DIA = 0 D, <0.5 D, and ≥0.5 D. Results. Six hundred and twelve cases (98.23%) in 623 children aged 7–12 yrs older entered into the study. Genders, age, and IA all affected AL. This could be represented by a linear regression line in the form AL = 21.46 − 0.43∗gender + 0.22∗age + 0.46∗IA (male = 1, female = 2; t=7.01, P<0.01 for sex; t=11.6, P<0.01 for age; and t=6.6, P<0.01 for IA; R2=0.16). The AL in the eye with larger IA was also longer when DIA was larger than 0.5 D (t=2.65, P<0.01). Conclusions. IA was observed to be associated with AL and might be a risk factor of the onset and progress of myopia in school-age children.

Objective: to analyze the neurodynamic indicators of the sensorimotor response of primary school age children with orthophoria and heterotropia. Material and methods. 51 children (102 eyes) aged 6-11 were examined. 2 groups that could be compared in terms of age and sex were formed. The first group consisted of 20 patients (40 eyes) with orthophoria associated with moderate hypertropia of Hm 3.5 (2.3; 5.3) diopters, the second group included children with concomitant convergent strabismus associated with moderate hypertropia of Hm 4.25 (2.0; 6.5) diopters - 31 patients (62 eyes). To study the properties of the nervous system (NS), the computer appliance «NS-Psychotest» (LLC «Neurosoft», Ivanovo, http://neurosoft. com/ru) was used. The neurodynamic indicators of the sensorimotor response were identified with the techniques «Simple Visual Motor Response» (SVMR), «Discrimination reaction» (DR), «Moving Object Response» (MOR), «Critical Flicker-Fusion Frequency» (CFF). Results. Concomitant strabismus in the children of the second group reliably leads to an increase in the time of SVMR, DR by 65.5 ms and 42.4 ms, respectively (p < 0.05), in comparison with the group of the children with orthophoria. The difference between the indices of DR and SVMR in the children of group 1 - 51.5 ms, of group 2 - 28.4 ms, verifies a decrease of the rate of the neurodynamic processes of the NS in the children with heretotropia. In the study with the MOR technique, the time of response in the first group was - -31 (-127; 50) ms, in the second group - 22 (-29; 94) ms (р = 0.000008), a positive value of the indicator of the response time in the children of the second group is a consequence of the prevalence of inhibition processes in the central nervous system in most the examined patients. Conclusion . The obtained results show that the presence of heterotropia in the children of the second group reliably leads to decreased mobility of nervous processes and predominance of inhibition processes in the central nervous system. The combination of the low velocity of the response and expressed inertness of nervous processes in the children of the second group are indicative of a lack of coordination of the interrelations between the centers of the visual and motor analyzers.

Introdução: A agilidade é fundamental para o judô, uma luta que demanda força e potência e utiliza mudanças bruscas de direção. Pouco se investigou, no Brasil, a respeito da qualidade física agilidade em crianças escolares pré-puberes.Objetivo: Comparar o nível de agilidade entre crianças praticantes e não-praticantes de judô de uma escola pública.Métodos: Pesquisa descritiva de corte transversal comparativa, da qual participaram 77 crianças de ambos os sexos: 47 praticantes de judô e 30 não praticantes. Teste t de Student para amostras independentes foi aplicado para a comparação entre os grupos.Resultados: Os praticantes regulares de judô exibiram maiores níveis de agilidade (10,98±0,79 segundos) do que os não praticantes de judô (13,48±0,74 segundos) e a diferença foi significativa (p=0,0001).Conclusão: Crianças que praticam judô apresentaram níveis maiores de agilidade do que as participantes de iniciação esportiva em outras modalidades, sugerindo que o treinamento de judô pode favorecer o desenvolvimento dessa capacidade física mais do que as demais modalidades. Outros estudos de intervenção devem ser conduzidos para esclarecer essa associação. Comparison of Agility Levels in Judo-Practicing and Non-Practicing School-Age Children: A Cross-Sectional StudyIntroduction: Introduction: Agility is fundamental to judo, a fight that demands strength and power and uses sudden changes of direction. Little has been investigated in Brazil regarding physical quality agility in prepubescent school children.Objective: To compare the level of agility between practicing and non-practicing children of judo in a public school.Methods: A descriptive comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in which 77 children of both sexes participated: 47 judo practitioners and 30 non-practitioners. Student's t-test for independent samples was applied for comparison between groups.Results: Regular judo practitioners exhibited higher levels of agility (10.98 ± 0.79 seconds) than non-judo practitioners (13.48 ± 0.74 seconds) and the difference was significant (p = 0.0001).Conclusion: Children who practice judo showed more agility than participants of sports initiation in other modalities suggesting that judo training may favor the development of this physical capacity more than the other modalities. Further intervention studies should be conducted to clarify this association.
