BACKGROUND Underuse of hearing aids is caused by several factors, including the stigma associated with hearing disability, affordability, and lack of awareness of rising hearing impairment associated with the growing population. Thus, there is a significant opportunity for the development of direct-to-consumer devices. For the past few years, smartphone-based hearing-aid apps have become more numerous and diverse, but few studies have investigated them. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to elucidate the electroacoustic characteristics and potential user benefits of a selection of currently available hearing-aid apps. METHODS We investigated the apps based on hearing-aid control standards (American National Standards Institute) using measurement procedures from previous studies. We categorized the apps and excluded those we considered inefficient. We investigated a selection of user-friendly, low-end apps, EarMachine and Sound Amplifier, with warble-tone audiometry, word recognition testing in unaided and aided conditions, and hearing-in-noise test in quiet and noise-front conditions in a group of users with mild hearing impairment (n = 7) as a pilot for a future long-term investigation. Results from the apps were compared with those of a conventional hearing aid. RESULTS Five of 14 apps were considered unusable based on low scores in several metrics, while the others varied across the range of electroacoustic measurements. The apps that we considered “high end” that provided lower processing latencies and audiogram-based fitting algorithms were superior overall. The clinical performance of the listeners tended to be better when using hearing aid, while the low end hearing-aid apps had limited benefits on the users. CONCLUSIONS Some apps showed the potential to benefit users with limited cases of minimal or mild hearing loss if the inconvenience of relatively poor electroacoustic performance did not outweigh the benefits of amplification.

Cyber threats have been growing tremendously in recent years. There are significant advancements in the threat space that have led towards an essential need for the strengthening of digital infrastructure security. Better security can be achieved by fine-tuning system parameters to the best and optimized security levels. For the protection of infrastructure and information systems, several guidelines have been provided by well-known organizations in the form of cybersecurity standards. Since security vulnerabilities incur a very high degree of financial, reputational, informational, and organizational security compromise, it is imperative that a baseline for standard compliance be established. The selection of security standards and extracting requirements from those standards in an organizational context is a tedious task. This article presents a detailed literature review, a comprehensive analysis of various cybersecurity standards, and statistics of cyber-attacks related to operating systems (OS). In addition to that, an explicit comparison between the frameworks, tools, and software available for OS compliance testing is provided. An in-depth analysis of the most common software solutions ensuring compliance with certain cybersecurity standards is also presented. Finally, based on the cybersecurity standards under consideration, a comprehensive set of minimum requirements is proposed for OS hardening and a few open research challenges are discussed.

Following the Harvard master hearing aid study in 1947 there was little research on linear amplification. Recently, however, there have been a number of studies designed to determine the relationship between the frequency-gain characteristic of a hearing aid and speech intelligibility for persons with sensorineural hearing loss. These studies have demonstrated that a frequency-gain characteristic that rises at a rate of 6 dB/octave, as suggested by the Harvard study, is not optimal. They have also demonstrated that high-frequency emphasis of 10–40 dB above 500–1000 Hz is beneficial. Most importantly, they have demonstrated that hearing aids as they are presently being fit do not provide maximum speech intelligibility. Percent word correct scores obtained with the best frequency-gain characteristics tested in various studies have been found to be 9 to 19 percentage points higher than scores obtained with commercial aids owned by subjects. This increase in scores is equivalent to an increase in signal-to-noise ratio of 10 to 20 dB. This is a significant increase which could allow impaired listeners to communicate in many situations where they presently cannot. These results demonstrate the need for further research on linear amplification aimed at developing practical suggestions for fitting hearing aids.

It was established that the level of minimum requirements for the speech training of elementary school students should be the same, regardless of the school in which the students study - with the Ukrainian language of instruction or another (in Russian, Bulgarian, Moldavian, etc.). The study of research on the problem revealed the place of speech situations in the language lessons, literary and extracurricular reading. By a speech situation, the author understands an artificially created situation where the student feels with the hero, or instead of the hero. Types of speech learning situations (real, imaginary, built on the basis of the read text, selected illustrations, drawings) are highlighted. The structural components of the speech situation (the description of the scene, participants in the conversation, the speaker’s life experience, speech patterns, speech task, stimulus, motive, speech reaction) are disclosed and a description of each structural component is given. It is determined that the condition for the effectiveness of the use of speech situations is the selection of speech material that meets certain criteria, principles and approaches, and the preparatory work of the teacher: clarifying the dictionary, working out the pronunciation of words, making phrases, etc.

In the present study, the recycling of modified bitumen soundproofing membranes, known as automotive-grade asphalt (ART) membranes, was carried out. The ART sheets were incorporated in the mixing stage of the asphalt mastic, which is part of the manufacturing process of new sheets. The selection of the best asphalt mastic formulation was performed at laboratory scale, where the ATR sheet cutting waste was added to the original asphalt mastic at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 and 15.0 % w/w percentages. The formulations were evaluated for six parameters of interest associated with softening point, rotational viscosity, density, weight per area, thickness and creep. It was determined that the properties of all the formulations studied met the minimum requirements stipulated for the commercialization of the product. The recycling process was carried out on an industrial scale using the formulation with 5% w/w of ATR residues, which presented a viscosity close to that of the original mastic. The results at industrial scale were favorable, since the six parameters of interest were within the ranges established in the regulations.

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Long Term Contraception Method (KB MKJP) in the City of Palu. The type of research used is descriptive with a qualitative approach by utilizing the post-positivism paradigm to see social phenomena that occur. Researchers determined the criteria for informants, namely program administrators, medical officers, and fertile age couples, including: 2 program administrators (BKKBN), 4 medical officers (Tadulako Hospital), 4 Fertile Age Couples (PUS). The results showed reliability with the aspect of timeliness, where the presence of medical personnel and program administrators was not according to what had been agreed or scheduled. Physical evidence with aspects of the facility, where the operating room is not yet available and does not meet the specified minimum requirements. Empathy with the information aspect, where the delivery of information related to KB MKJP in the form of risks and side effects is not conveyed to the PUS, while information in the form of Long-Term Contraceptive Method (MKJP) type of contraceptive methods, benefits, and benefits have been conveyed completely, clearly and easy to understand Fertile Age Couples (PUS). Empathy is seen from the information aspect that the information related to KB MKJP by program administrators and medical officers has been delivered completely and clearly. Responsiveness is not only seen by service providers, but can also be assessed through service recipients because in the selection of contraceptives there are still PUS who are not able to make appropriate decisions so that they require counseling or information delivery by program administrators.
