As China attaches great importance to the construction of ecological civilization, the fiscal expenditure on environmental protection is increasing year by year, which needs to attract more social capital to participate in the construction of ecological civilization. As the main body of market economy, it is of great significance for enterprises to fulfill their environmental responsibilities. Especially when technological innovation has become the most important driving force for enterprise growth and national competition, the relationship between corporate environmental responsibility fulfillment and technological innovation has attracted more and more attention from all walks of life. Based on this, this paper uses 2015-2019 non-state-owned chemical industry listed companies as the research object to investigate whether environmental protection behavior affects enterprise performance and whether innovation performance plays a mediating role. It is found that there is a significant positive correlation between environmental protection behavior and enterprise performance, but innovation performance will not have a significant mediating effect on environmental protection behavior and enterprise performance in the short term.

Abstract The policy of the national smart city (NSC) pilots, a new type of urbanization for future development, has been implemented in China in batches. This paper investigates the mechanism and effects of the NSC pilots on the environment. Using the prefecture-level panel data during 2004-2018 period, our dynamic difference-in-differences (DID) estimation shows that the NSC pilots causally mitigate air (water) pollution by 21.5% (23.3%). The mediating effect model indicates that the allocation efficiency and technological innovation play a partial mediating role in the impacting mechanism. After introducing the two mediating channels into the dynamic DID model, the reduction effect for air (water) pollution drops to 15.5% (17.3%). Comparatively, improving allocation efficiency instead of technological innovation takes the major mediating role in reducing air pollution, while water pollution the opposite. The result of city heterogeneity shows that cities with high human capital and fiscal support contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution. This study also provides some related policy suggestions by analyzing the initial mechanism and city heterogeneity of the NSC pilots.

Purpose Open innovation and information systems have been key topics in the theoretical domain, but little empirical research thoroughly examines how information technology (IT) capability affects open innovation performance. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between IT capability and open innovation performance and to expose the inner mechanism at the firm level. Design/methodology/approach This paper collected firm-level data in China; 232 usable questionnaires from different firms were collected. Then, the study used a structural equation model by AMOS for hypothesis testing. Findings The results indicate that both internal IT capability and external IT capability have positive impacts on open innovation performance; potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity mediate the relationship between external IT capability and open innovation performance. Additionally, realized absorptive capacity plays a mediating role in the relationship between internal IT capability and open innovation performance. Practical implications These findings indicate that practitioners should pay attention to the important relationship between absorptive capacity and IT capability and open innovation performance in Chinese businesses. Originality/value Existing research has emphasized the influence of IT on open innovation, but empirical studies have not thoroughly focused on the inner mechanisms of the effect of IT capability on open innovation performance. Drawing on firm capability theory, this paper classifies IT capability as internal and external IT capability and absorptive capacity as potential and realized absorptive capacity. Then, this paper confirms the mediating role of absorptive capacity between IT capability and open innovation performance.

Purpose – This paper aims to evaluate the relationship between organisational resources, technological innovation, relationship quality and enterprise performance, as well as the mediating effect of firm–supplier RQ. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was conducted of the palm oil processing sector in Malaysia, consisting milling, refining and oleo-chemical companies. Data were gathered and used to statistically test hypotheses that underpinned a proposed conceptual model. Findings – Organisational resources have a direct impact on RQ, which, in turn, has a direct effect on performance indicators such as financial performance, market effectiveness and strategic objectives. RQ is a mediator in some of the resource-performance relationships, which underpins the genesis of the research undertaken. The mediating role played by RQ in promoting business performance in the palm oil processing sectors, is achieved through translating the effects of organisational resources into improved business performance. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation of this study lies in its cross-sectional nature. A single respondent was drawn from each company, and information from each respondent was obtained only once and at a single point in time. Practical implications – The results offer some suggestions to top management, e.g. on the type of resources to invest in and exploring vital relational issues that enhance performance outcomes and the impact of different sets of resources on relational dynamics. Originality/value – Very little is known about the application of resource-based view in the Asian context, or how RQ affects business performance from the East Asian perspective. By confirming the strong impact of RQ on business performance in the Asian context, the study adds value by providing evidence from the East. The study also makes a contextual contribution, by demonstrating the applicability of the observed relationships among palm oil processing companies from a non-Western, collectivist society.

The effect of short selling mechanism is remained to be discussed as the conjecture regulators regard it as the cause of stock crash, while numerous previous studies have shown the external corporate governance effect of short selling which could supervise and monitor the behaviors of managements by reducing information asymmetries and agency costs. By reviewing the precious researches on the short selling, the findings of this study are that besides short selling could improve the informativeness of stock pricing, it also acts as external corporate governor and innovation motivator to develop the overall value and innovation performance of firms.

On the basis of the Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995)’s study, this paper examines the effects of knowledge creation process on firm’s innovation performance and the mediating role of organizational learning in this relationship. Conceptually, we develop a research model summarizing the relationships between these variables. This model was tested within 214 companies belonging to the information technology and communication (ICT) sector. Results highlight the role of organizational learning as a partial mediator in the relationship between the knowledge creation process and innovation performance. Findings identify also the importance of tacit-linked activities namely socialization, internalization and externalization for innovation performance of the Tunisian ICT companies.

This study investigates a method to improve small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs’) business performance and organizational effectiveness for sustainable growth. This study hypothesizes that technological innovation capabilities have a positive impact on business performance and organizational effectiveness and that metacognition at the organizational level has a mediating role in the relationship. To verify the relationship, this study conducts an empirical analysis using a survey questionnaire. The findings are as follows. First, technological innovation capability has a positive effect on both business performance and organizational effectiveness. Second, organizational metacognition has a partial mediating effect on the effect of technological innovation capability on business performance and organizational effectiveness. The results suggest that chief executive officer (CEO) and middle managers contemplate the methodology of metacognition at the organizational level and that they should focus more on enhancing business performance by developing technological innovation capability and organizational metacognition.

Based on information asymmetry, agency theory and resource-based view (RBV), this study investigates the impact of venture capital (VC) on venture firm innovation performance, ascertains the extent to which VC affects venture firm innovation performance and finds the mediating effect of management incentives. Constructing a sample of a novel panel dataset of firms listed on the SME Board of China, we examined a sample of 927 start-ups between 2008 and 2017, showing a notable negative relationship between VC and Patent, and a positive relationship between VC and total factor productivity (TFP), providing stable evidence that VC could not spur firm patent directly, but facilitate the commercialization of innovation. Moreover, it shows that management equity incentives (MEI) and management cash incentives (MCI) playing significant positive mediating role between VC and TFP, while there is no mediating effect between VC and Patent. Findings of this study strengthen the experience of VC and suggest how practitioners of SMEs to enhance the commercialization of innovation, considerably extends our understanding of the impact of VC on venture firm innovation performance.
