The article describes the development process of a refrigeration unit using carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. A feature of the plant is the possibility of recirculating carbon dioxide. The authors substantiate the use of the natural substance CO2 as a refrigerant and consider the prospects for using the refrigerant R744. The efficiency of the cycle of a one-stage subcritical refrigeration unit is analyzed. The authors have designed a recirculating carbon dioxide refrigeration unit based on the traditional subcritical cycle. The essential and auxiliary components of the refrigeration machine were presented and described. The developed scheme allows freezing food products by direct contact of the product with snow-like carbon dioxide. After that, the sublimation process takes place in the freezing chamber and the gas-liquid mixture is sent through the liquid separator for recirculation. The article describes the operation of the system diagram, the principle of operation, and the purpose of the elements of automation and regulation.

The paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental analysis of a vacuum-freeze-drying refrigeration machine based on carbon dioxide. Such refrigeration machines can be equipped with refrigerators for the needs of medicine, where low temperatures are widely in demand in the range from minus 80 degrees Celsius to minus 130 degrees Celsius. The problem of developing alternative refrigeration machines is dictated by modern environmental requirements for working substances, which are gradually being tightened and soon the use of familiar freons will become impossible. For the air conditioning and commercial refrigeration industry, new substances are being actively developed, such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), hydrocarbons can also serve as substitutes for hydrofluorocarbons and their mixtures, but it must be considered that they are combustible and explosive. A carbon dioxide vacuum sublimation unit may be an alternative to modern freon vapor compression refrigeration units for the indicated temperature range, but subject to comparable energy costs during its operation. The article examined the three-stage and four-stage cycles of a vacuum-freeze-drying refrigeration machine, conducted their theoretical comparison in terms of COP with a cascade cycle on hydrocarbon working substances. It can be noted that the COP of the considered cycles are close, but the environmental friendliness, safety and non-combustibility of carbon dioxide gives the advantages of a vacuum freeze-drying refrigeration machine.

The disadvantage of the technological process of freezing food products using carbon dioxide is the irrational use of its waste vapors. From the authors’ point of view, it is desirable to use carbon dioxide not only directly on the line for freezing and cooling food raw materials. Cooling of carbon dioxide vapors after processing on freezing lines with further use for refrigeration looks promising, for example, for freezing food materials, for which the freezing temperature according to the technological instructions can be higher than the boiling point of carbon dioxide -78 ℃. An innovative refrigeration machine based on a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube has been developed for cooling waste carbon dioxide for further use in the refrigeration processing of food products. It is based on carbon dioxide recovery technology.

Refrigeration is an attempt to maintain the temperature level of a material or room at a level lower than the temperature of the surrounding environment by absorbing heat from the material or room. In short it can be said that refrigeration is the process of transferring heat from a material or another room. Basically, refrigeration technology is heat treatment. The refrigeration process is inseparable from the cooling load problem during the refrigeration machine operates. Excessive cooling load on a refrigeration unit will certainly have an effect that can accelerate the process of decomposition or deterioration in the quality of the catch. This research aims to calculate the cooling load of the blast freezer water and determine the refrigeration components of the blast freezer water unit. From the research results obtained, that the ship whose refrigeration system has a cooling power of 30 kW is able to cool fish as much as 3.5 tons (3,500 kg). With a cooling load of 1 ABF space of 28.54 kW with a fish mass of 3,500 kg. the COPactual achieved by the blast freezer water is about 2.8 smaller than the COPcarnot of 6.1.
