Near Field Communication (NFC) as relatively new wireless communication technology pushes new challenges to application developers to make their applications easier to use and simpler to operate. This point of view known as usability element. Usability is one of the elements for creating good quality applications. This study aims to analyse the usability of mobile-based application embeds with NFC. We also try to evaluate usability in applications used by children. We developed an application called Receptionist which has a primary function as a communication tool between students, teachers and parents at a middle school. To know the impact of the NFC, the Receptionist input system is designed with two methods, via conventional navigation (using buttons) and via NFC. To understand the usability of each method, we do user testing and questioners on students. The results show, using the NFC there is a significant increase in usability attributes: efficiency, effectiveness, and learnability. On the other hand, there is decreases of user satisfaction comparing to conventional method. In general, this study demonstrates the potential of new input device technologies that can improve the usability of mobile-based applications.

Objective: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), a lung infection developing in patients on a ventilator in Intensive Care Units (ICU), is the second most common nosocomial infection and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in ICUs. To reduce the incidence rate of VAP complication, many healthcare organizations have already developed certain strategies and guidelines. However, there are still high rates of VAP infections mainly due to: conflicting guidelines from different sources, implementing the guidelines at different times and conditions, different ICU caregivers at different shifts, and of course the human mistakes. Methods: The present study aimed to develop a dashboard to help reducing VAP incidences in ICUs. To achieve the objective of the research, first, the VAP prevention guidelines were compiled. The object-oriented analysis approach was adopted for designing of the dashboard software. To assess the impact of the developed dashboard on the reduction of VAP events, a pilot hospital was selected and a pilot project was prepared. For the dashboard usability assessment based on user satisfaction, a questionnaire was developed as the survey tool. Conclusion: The dashboard was developed and put into operation in a pilot ICU. The results from the t-test (with a probable error of 0.05 percent) indicated a meaningful difference between the number of VAP patients before and after the dashboard implementation with p-value ˂ 0.02. Also, the developed software was evaluated from a usability point of view based on user satisfaction, with health professionals and caregivers of the pilot ICU as the users of the software. The total score was equivalent to 95 percent, falling within the acceptable range of 75-100 percent.

Since attendance monitoring and recording plays a key role in the school environment, especially regarding the duties of students and guardians, the purpose of this paper was to develop a mobile application to automate student attendance recording using Near Field Communication technology. (NFC). Students record their presence by approaching an NFC tag (present on ID badges) from a teacher’s mobile device, which receives identification data from the students present. This verification method is an additional option for making calls and enables recorded data to be exported and used in the school’s academic system.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to first review the implementation of automatic identification and data capture) technologies in library/information science, focusing on barcode technology, radio frequency identification (RFID) and near field communication (NFC). This paper then presents S-Library, a new android-based application, to enable users to perform a wide range of information science-related transactions, such as borrowing, searching, returning and viewing transaction records. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents the design process and the database and software components. For analysis, the authors used application testing, and also usability testing, with a questionnaire distributed to 343 users. Findings – The implementation of NFC technology means that S-Library has a number of technical advantages over other approaches. It was also shown with user acceptance testing that there was a high degree of user satisfaction with S-Library. Research limitations/implications – Although the findings combine technical assessment and usability testing and are extremely positive, further user evaluation could be performed. In addition, S-Library does not currently read existing RFID tags, which would improve the application further. Practical implications – The system proposed here shows that S-Library is a feasible approach taken to improve the library transaction experience and that it can replace and improve upon older technologies. Originality/value – This paper provides a first successful demonstration of a functioning and tested android and NFC-based library transaction system and shows that this approach generates a high degree of user reliability.

Efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus implemented in Indonesia in the education sector have resulted in learning at junior high schools in Semarang City using online learning through parental guidance. This study aims to describe the impact of COVID-19 on online learning in Semarang City's first schools. Online learning can use digital technology such as google classrooms, study houses, zoom, video conferencing, telephone or live chat and others. This research is a qualitative research. The informants in this study were students, teachers and parents of junior high school guardians in Semarang City. The results of this study were (1) The impact felt by students on the teaching and learning process at home was that students felt they had more experience than learning in class. (2) From the parent guardian's point of view, the impact felt is the additional cost of purchasing internet quota and parents have to spend time accompanying their children in online learning. (3) The impact felt by the teacher is that not all are proficient in using internet technology or social media as a learning tools.

The implementation of context awareness in smartphones is getting broader. Through embedded sensors in smartphones, they are able to detect the device’s location and communicate through radio frequency. By communicating through Near Field Communication (NFC), smartphones are able to read NFC tags in short distances to understand the context of the information. Developing a mobile application in the context of blood donation will allow the application to assist donors through the process of donation and improves the user’s experience. The blood donation study is conducted at the National Blood Centre (NBC) in Malaysia. In developing the mobile application, the system architecture and development pattern were designed. The system architecture is presented to understand the requirements of implementing the application. The Model-View-Presenter (MVP) pattern was utilized to develop the application to ensure the development followed the standard procedure. The mobile application with the context awareness ability was evaluated through interviews with potential end users and the stakeholders of NBC. The evaluation resulted in positives responses and offered valuable feedbacks.

Near Field Communication is a type of Radio Frequency technology that permits exchange of information over a small distance by versatile phones, computers, labels or other electronics devices. This paper is based on Near Field Communication reviews, features and usefulness of the innovation and summarizes the wide range of its present and expected applications in modern era. The aim of the paper is to explore the impact of NFC technology and its applications on libraries and information centers and proposed system will be helpful in the advancement of traditional Library management system.
