Agile software development methodologies are attracting attention from academics and practitioners for planning and managing software projects. The eXtreme Programming (XP) challenges conformist wisdom regarding software system development processes and practices as agile methodologies. To work efficiently in the current software development practice, characterized by requirements fuzziness, XP moves away from document-centric operations into people-centric management. In the XP-based software project, the customers play an essential role, having multiple responsibilities such as driving the project, gathering requirements (‘user stories'), and exercising quality control (or acceptance testing). Besides, the customers must liaise with external project stakeholders (e.g., funding authorities, end-users) while maintaining the development team's trust and the wider business. The success of such software project management practices relies on the quality result of each stage of development obtained through rigorous testing. This chapter describes three characteristics of XP project management: customer role, software testing feedback, and learning.

Purpose Factory acceptance testing (FAT) in the construction industry has been severely hampered due to restrictions in cross-border travel resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, virtual FAT (vFAT) became a popular substitute for physical FAT. However, the credibility of vFAT is being questioned because it was adopted without much scrutiny. Hence, this study is aimed at investigating vFATs and re-engineering the FAT process to suit an effective vFAT environment.Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature search on FAT procedures was followed by two stages of expert interviews with eight leading subject experts and a case study. The findings were analysed using code-based content analysis on NVivo software.Findings Strengths of vFATs include “reduction in cost and time consumed”, “flexibility for more participants” and “faster orders”. Most emphasized weaknesses include “lack of reliability” and “lack of technology transfer”. vFAT has mostly increased test reliability by “improving accessibility” and has decreased reliability by “restricting physical touch and feel observation of the equipment”. A four-step vFAT process was developed with a noteworthy additional step called “Pre-FAT Meeting”.Research limitations/implications The scope of this study is limited to the Sri Lankan construction industry. Expansion of the geographical area of focus is recommended for future studies.Originality/value The findings of this study unveil a vFAT process, which is timely and beneficial for construction practitioners to optimize and enhance the effectiveness of vFATs which are currently conducted in a disarranged manner.

Concrete for airport rigid pavement construction is generally specified to achieve a minimum characteristic flexural strength of 4.5 MPa and acceptance testing during construction aims to verify this key design assumption. The large flexural beam specimens are cumbersome and the testing is expensive. Consequently, industry desires a more convenient test and a laboratory-based conversion to an estimated flexural strength for acceptance testing during production. This research developed and trialed a protocol for the conversion of indirect tensile strength and compressive strength to estimate the flexural strength. The laboratory correlation was encouraging. However, when trialed on a real construction project, the conversions significantly underestimated the measured flexural strength and the risk of rejecting compliant batches of concrete was significantly higher. Further research is required to understand why the reliable conversions developed in the laboratory failed in the field. This may be related to the effect of ambient temperature on 28 day flexural strength, despite the constant curing condition.

Abstract The maturation of North Sea platform jackets coupled with high fatigue stresses, fabrication defects, extensive usage, and low-redundancy design eventually result in fatigue cracking. The high sea states in the North Sea further exacerbate the problem. If not closely monitored, fatigue cracks can propagate into and around the circumference of a brace relatively quickly—ultimately leading to brace severance. When confronted with a loss of structural integrity, operators have two options: conduct expensive subsea repairs or decommission the asset. Realising a market gap, DCN Diving has explored alternate repair strategies, leading to the development of the DCN-patent pending µ-Habitat welding system. The µ-Habitat makes it possible to respond quicker, execute subsea repairs faster and guarantee quality at a fraction of the cost of bespoke or modular habitats. Through size reduction, it is possible to reduce the fabrication, production, and handling costs of µ-Habitat. Furthermore, the smaller footprint reduces installation time while simplifying sealing and de-watering offshore, saving time and money. Using a combination of product development facilitators and process improvement methodologies, such as AGILE, SCRUM, and design thinking, reduces the preparation time, making the system incredibly responsive yet flexible. Additionally, using an experienced and dedicated project team in combination with standardised products further minimises the response time to execute a repair. A dry environment, pre-heating, in-process cleaning/grinding, and unrestricted access are fundamental to ensuring high-quality welds. In addition, prototyping, extensive function testing, and mock-ups validate the habitat design before commissioning via factory acceptance testing and mobilisation to guarantee the failsafe performance of the µ-Habitat offshore. The µ-Habitat can play a crucial role in the overall life extension strategy for any offshore structure, ultimately minimising cost, risk and production downtime associated with future subsea repairs.

Children nowadays are overwhelming with luxurious things and have only little or even no money concepts where most of the kids just reach out to their parents for buying anything they want.  This could be an issue for parents, hence kids should be taught the value of money and knowing that save their own money is important to purchase anything they desired. This project proposed an innovative way to inculcate saving behaviours in children using an IoT Piggy Bank. This goal-directed approach allows children to set their saving goals (values of their desired items) and form a saving habit slowly through their saving routines toward their saving goals. Every saving made by the children will be tracked in a mobile app and a buzzer will be triggered as a reinforcer to alert children when they do not save regularly.  The user acceptance testing (UAT) of the proposed prototype has shown the majority of the parents (90%) agreed that the proposed IoT piggy bank is very suitable for children to instil saving habit. Most of the children have reacted positively where they were having lots of fun when trying on the IoT piggy bank and expressed that they would continue to use it for saving in the future.

The process of providing certificates using internet to the citizens, known as e-certificate has increased. This is because e-certificate offers streamlined and faster process yet secure. Therefore, e-certificate seems to be useful especially for Waru Barat Village authority, Pamekasan District, Madura, whose people mostly work outside or even overseas. Eventually, they often need to obtain certificates from the authority for various purposes. On the other hand, the authority is keen to speeding up the delivery of the document but still pay attention to the validity and security. Therefore, this research attempted to design and develop e-certificate for Waru Barat Village using QR Code. The functionality testing showed the application successfully generated e-certificate along with the unique QR Code to secure and maintain the validity of the document. The user acceptance testing involving village staffs and people as the primary users indicated the overall score are 97.2% and 95.6% respectively. This implies that the application proofed to be useful and usable according to the staffs and especially to those who live outside the village. Another flow-map evaluation also showed that the implementation of e-certificate was able to make the administrative process more streamlined, faster, remove geographical barrier, save the resources (cost, time and utility). Despite these practical implication, the contribution of this research, especially to the IT discipline which could be adopted in the future study, is the system architecture and e-certificate application along with the algorithm for generating unique QR Code to ensure the security and validity of the document.           </em></p><p class="Abstrak"><strong><em><br /></em></strong></p><p class="Abstrak"><strong><em><br /></em></strong></p>
