The proportion of old age citizens (above 60 years) in India constitutes 8.6% of the total population (60 million). 1% of this population currently resides in old age homes across India due to various reasons. The present living conditions of elderly in old age homes are not commendable. It has been found from research that the setting of old age homes and the employees influence the welfare of the residents and their health care. Despite various services provided, researchers have concluded that service gaps exist among staff and residents of old age homes. In the present scenario, it is the need of the hour to understand the living standards of the older generation in old age homes, to study the various services offered by them and how the residents spend their lives there in order to better their conditions of living. The purpose of this paper is (i) to draw insights from an in-depth analysis of old age homes and (ii) to study the perceptions in service quality of old age homes; by studying old age homes in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Data for the study was collected through a face to face interview with its residents. Analysis of the collected data shows that ‘responsiveness’ and ‘empathy’ are the dimensions that are to be improved in both the states to increase overall satisfaction levels and meet the expectations of residents. The quality of the attributes, ‘Cleaning services for rooms’, ‘freedom to plan own time’ and ‘respect for residents’ privacy’ shall be improved by old age homes in order to improve the perception of service quality by residents.

This study analyses factors associated with the incidence of sterilization regret in the four south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Using data from the National Family Health Surveys, in all four states the incidence of regret was found to be less than 10% and the factors significantly associated with it were child loss experience and quality of services. Hence, there is a need to improve the quality of services, both in terms of counselling and service provision, and women need to be counselled about the permanent nature of sterilization in order to avoid future regret.

Telemedicine Application is one of the rapidly developing health applications in Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the association between quality of services, including tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy, and patient satisfaction in Telemedicine Application users compared to conventional health services (face-to-face). Primary data were obtained from 100 respondents who had received healthcare either from Telemedicine Application or face-to-face (conventional) throughout 2019. Data analysis used path analysis and the Wilcoxon test. This study found that service quality, both in Telemedicine Application and conventional care, influenced patient satisfaction. In subjects using Telemedicine Application, reliability and responsiveness did not significantly influence patient satisfaction. BACKGROUND Technological advancements have enabled nutrient estimation by smartphone apps such as goFOOD. This is an artificial intelligence–based smartphone system, which uses food images or video captured by the user as input and then translates these into estimates of nutrient content. The quality of the data is highly dependent on the images the user records. This can lead to a major loss of data and impaired quality. Instead of removing these data from the study, in-depth analysis is needed to explore common mistakes and to use them for further improvement of automated apps for nutrition assessment. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to analyze common mistakes made by participants using the goFOOD Lite app, a version of goFOOD, which was designed for food-logging, but without providing results to the users, to improve both the instructions provided and the automated functionalities of the app. METHODS The 48 study participants were given face-to-face instructions for goFOOD Lite and were asked to record 2 pictures (1 recording) before and 2 pictures (1 recording) after the daily consumption of each food or beverage, using a reference card as a fiducial marker. All pictures that were discarded for processing due to mistakes were analyzed to record the main mistakes made by users. RESULTS Of the 468 recordings of nonpackaged food items captured by the app, 60 (12.8%) had to be discarded due to errors in the capturing procedure. The principal problems were as follows: wrong fiducial marker or improper marker use (19 recordings), plate issues such as a noncompatible or nonvisible plate (8 recordings), a combination of various issues (17 recordings), and other reasons such as obstacles (hand) in front of the camera or matching recording pairs (16 recordings). CONCLUSIONS No other study has focused on the principal problems in the use of automatic apps for assessing nutritional intake. This study shows that it is important to provide study participants with detailed instructions if high-quality data are to be obtained. Future developments could focus on making it easier to recognize food on various plates from its color or shape and on exploring alternatives to using fiducial markers. It is also essential for future studies to understand the training needed by the participants as well as to enhance the app’s user-friendliness and to develop automatic image checks based on participant feedback.

Background: The ageing process is not determined truly by genes and personal characteristics but mainly by his adjustment with the environment he lives. Ageing of a person depends on many factors which influence the course of life like physiological, social, psychological, economic, environmental and cultural factors which in turn affect the quality of life (QoL). Given these findings, quality of life is influenced by the place where a person lives. The objective of the study was to assess and compare the quality of life of elderly living in old age homes and community. Methods: This was a cross sectional, questionnaire based study done on elderly people (>60 years) living in old age home, urban and rural area. The study was carried out for a period of 3 months from April to June 2016 after taking consent from the study participants. WHOQoL-BREF questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. Results: Elderly females were more than elderly males in rural and old age home. The study participants of all the three places were concentrated in the age group 65-70 years old. The mean scores of physical, psychological and social domains were high in urban elderly people. Most of the study population was illiterate in urban and rural area but in old age home most of them were educated. There was significant difference between the mean scores for psychological and environmental domain (p=0.048 and 0.001 respectively). Conclusions: Participants living in the urban area had higher mean scores in the physical, psychological and social domains as compared to rural area and old age home. The mean score of environmental domain was high in rural area as compared to urban and old age home.
