Electronic learning, distant learning, collaborative work, mobile learning and internet based learning concepts are ever more present in superior learning systems. At this date for study or for finding different information we may access different search engines (like Google) where we can consult information based websites, blogs or online tutorials. Elearning systems can be grouped in online systems that have no direct interaction between the students and the professor, face to face systems that use both electronic resources and student-professor interaction, selflearning systems based on blogs, tutorials, teaching programs or web based systems. We can safely assume that e-learning is rapidly growing and that many universities have online free platforms developed for aiding students. The technological leap of current industries poses new challenges for the traditional educational systems. Efforts are known and acknowledged for changing and enhancing the existent educational systems and the orientation towards online learning processes.

Research relevance: in 2020 year, due to COVID-19 conditions, educational institutions of all levels began to be forced to organize the educational process using e-learning and distant learning technologies. This process was not easy for students nor for teachers. It was especially difficult to study natural sciences, for example, chemistry from a distance. Research materials and methods: e-learning is based on distant learning technologies, electronic libraries, scientific materials in electronic format, as well as on use of information and telecommunication networks and many programs for remote communication with students. Research results: organization of learning process with using e-learning and distant learning technologies has some advantages. Conclusions: in distant learning of chemical disciplines, the course consists mainly of same stages as in traditional education: activation of fundamental chemical concepts; explanation of topic, expected results and new material; reflection or generalization, student assessment and homework.

Recent advances in the field of digital technology have had a significant role in changing the concept of learning and teaching for both students and teachers. These developments have enabled educational systems to move from their traditional classroom-based teaching models to a more enhanced blended/e-learning approach including an array of electronic learning tools such as digital microscopy, electronic cell counter, 3D virtual reality, and demonstration videos. An integration of these digital tools along with contemporary face-to-face teaching can significantly improve student learning outcomes and provide convenient and flexible access to education and training. This model demonstrated a positive impact on laboratory-based courses such as Laboratory Medicine at Griffith University. The objective of this chapter is to highlight the impact and advantages of this particular model from the student- and teacher-based perspective. This chapter will also discuss some of the challenges of implementing this mode of teaching and provide future directions.

E-learning systems play an increasingly important role in lifelong learning. Tailoring the learning process to individual needs is a key issue in such systems. Intelligent Educational Systems (IESs) are e-learning systems employing Artificial Intelligence methods to effectively adapt to learner characteristics. Main types of IESs are Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) and Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems (AEHSs) incorporating intelligent methods. In this chapter, the authors present technologies and techniques used in the primary modules of IESs and survey corresponding patents. They present issues and problems involving specific IES modules as well as the overall IES. The authors discuss solutions offered for such issues by Artificial Intelligence methods and patents. They also discuss categorization aspects of patents related to IESs and briefly present the work described in some representative patents. Lastly, the authors outline future research directions regarding IESs.

Background: The use of electronic learning (e-learning) systems is gaining popularity especially within a Higher Education (HE) context. However, scholars have identified some factors that affect the utilisation and the acceptance of such systems, one of which is the gender divide, which favours mostly males ahead of females.Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the acceptance of the e-learning system within a South African HE setting, including the influential role of gender in the acceptance of such a system. Method: Quantitative data was collected through a cross-sectional survey using 113 registered final year students at a South African university who were making use of an e-learning system as part of their teaching delivery. The measuring instrument used was the technology acceptance instrument (TAI) and included measures of computer self-efficacy (CSE), perceived ease of use (PEU), perceived usefulness (PU), and behavioural intention to use (BIU). Results: The presence of a gender divide was found to exist in this study. Women’s ratings of the acceptance of e-learning systems were found to be slightly higher than those of the male respondents. In addition to this, elements of the TAI were found to be related to one another. Conclusion: The study concludes by arguing that lecturers and facilitators need to pay attention to usage patterns of e-learning systems as they affect how such systems are adopted by their students. Therefore, preceding student acceptance of electronic learning systems should be efforts to address any issues that affect the acceptance and effective utilisation of such systems.

En la post-Web 2.0, el papel del vídeo se ha vuelto cada vez más importante, tanto en el e-learning como en los sistemas de aprendizaje semipresencial. Este artículo pretende identificar cómo la anotación en vídeo puede ayudar a explorar la comunicación en la formación de profesores. Habida cuenta de la necesidad de tener en cuenta la gran diversidad de alumnos, el trabajo en colaboración y los intercambios en línea pueden contribuir a aumentar la comprensión de la comunicación intercultural. En primer lugar, comenzamos con una presentación de anotaciones en vídeo colaborativo para observar el lugar y el papel de la interacción en este sistema. A continuación, tratamos de descubrir elementos del proceso de diseño en un proyecto de investigación basado en el diseño sobre el celuloide, un dispositivo de anotación de vídeo a través de la descripción de dos experimentos: sus contextos, los vídeos utilizados, las modalidades de consulta y los procesos de anotación desarrollados para aumentar la interacción. In post-Web 2.0, the role of video has become increasingly important, both in e-learning and in blended learning systems. This article aims to identify how video annotation can help explore communication in teacher training. With the necessity to take into account the great diversity of pupils, collaborative work and online exchanges may help increase understanding of intercultural communication. Firstly, we begin with a presentation of collaborative video annotation to observe the place and the role of interaction in this system. Then, we seek to uncover elements of the design process in a design-based research project on Celluloid, a video annotation device through the description of two experiments: their contexts, the videos used, the consultation modalities and the annotation processes developed to increase interaction.

Augmented Reality (AR) is merging real and virtual environments within a single interaction space. This tight integration of computer technologies into a real environment is creating new opportunities and challenges for the designers of e-learning systems as well as a new kind of user experience (UX) for the learner. More recently, AR-based educational systems were developed that are implementing learning scenarios for primary and secondary schools. An important goal of these novel teaching platforms is to enhance the students’ motivation to learn. This chapter reports on the perceived educational and motivational value of an AR-based learning scenario for chemistry based on the results of a user-centered formative usability evaluation. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected during two experiments with students from secondary schools. While the comparison between the two types of measure increases confidence in the evaluation results, the qualitative measures also provide a detailed description of the user learning experience.

Gathering and extracting knowledge from the large amount of data available today is becoming more and more important in our information society, and similarly, learning is an essential important part of our everyday lives. The new requirements of the competing world and the development of more advanced technologies have also changed traditional educational systems, which now employ better and more effective teaching and learning methods. In this regard, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the field of education offers both great challenges and opportunities in building e-learning systems. E-learning systems allow learners to access the educational materials ubiquitously from anywhere at any time. Therefore, these systems have to become adaptive to the needs and preferences of each individual learner. This chapter presents a review of the important concepts and background for research to include introduction and examination of e-learning systems and intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), available today.

This paper argues that a new generation of powerful E-learning systems could start on the crossroads of two emerging fields: courseware re-use and adaptive educational systems. We argue for a new distributed architecture for E-learning systems based on the idea of adaptive reusable content services. This paper discusses problems that have to be solved on the way to the new organization of E-learning and reviews existing approaches and tools that are paving the way to next generation E-learning systems. It also presents two pioneer systems - APeLS and KnowledgeTree that have attempted to develop a new service-based architecture for adaptive E-learning.

This article focuses on the implementation of the national programme "Digital Economy of the Russian Federation" and the federal project "Human Resources for the Digital Economy" in the organisation of the mining and metallurgical complex. The object of the study is e-learning systems. The subject of the study is the processes of using e-learning systems in the organization-basis of the study relating to the mining and metallurgical complex in Russia. The aim of the work is to develop recommendations for the management of organizations that are going to implement distance learning technology in the educational processes of staff. The methodology of the study includes a survey of employees of the organisation under study on the attitude and quality of training in an e-learning system. The experience of personnel training in enterprises with the help of different information systems is considered. The focus is on the analysis of the use of the training and control system "Olympox" in the organisation of the mining and metallurgy industry. The results of an employee survey are given to find out their attitude to the introduction of an electronic learning information system and to the organization of training processes in it. Recommendations on the improvement of information training systems used for personnel assessment and development are offered. Based on the results of the study, it was determined that the quality of personnel development depends on the competent combination of training in a face-to-face format with technology that allows you to practice theory in the form of tests and open questions and practice in the form of cases and exercises to practice working situations in conditions as close to the real.
