Aluminum foam is a lightweight material with high energy absorption capacity. In this study A Nonlinear three-dimensional hydrocode numerical simulation was carried out using autodyn-3d, which is an extensive code dealing with explosion problems. In this simulation, a high explosive material (comp B) is blasted against several concrete panels. The model was first validated using experimental tests carried out by Chengqing and has shown good results. Several numerical tests were carried out to study two parameters that affect the deflection of reinforced concrete panels. The parameters included are the thickness of concrete target and the thickness of steel plate. The results showed that increasing the thickness of the steel plate has an insignificant effect on the deflection of the reinforced concrete target while increasing the thickness of the concrete panel has a significant effect on the deflection of the concrete target.

Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have advantages such as high elastic stiffness, stable hysteresis behavior, high energy absorption capacity, and decent ductility. However, one of the main drawbacks of SPSWs is their buckling under lateral loading. To address this issue, a simple and practical solution in the form of using a trapezoidal plate moment connection (PMC) and a narrow gap between the infill plate and columns is presented. The PMC will act as an energy absorber, similar to a yielding steel plate, and keep the other structural members in an elastic state. Extensive three-dimensional finite element (FE) models of the SPSW system were investigated under monotonic and cyclic loading. The results revealed that by separating the infill plate from the vertical boundary elements and using two vertical edge stiffeners at both edges of the wall, the same lateral bearing capacity of the conventional system can be achieved. In addition, by increasing the thickness of the PMC from 6.5 to 26 mm, the load-bearing capacity, energy dissipation, and elastic stiffness increased approximately 2, 2.5, and 3.2 times, respectively. It was also found that the flexural capacity ratio of the connection to the beam had little effect on the overall force–displacement behavior. However, it can affect the system failure mechanism. Finally, the tension field inclination angle for such SPSWs was proposed in the range of 30 to 35°.

The paper presents a numerical analysis of corrugated steel plate (CSP) bridge with reinforced concrete (RC) relieving slab under static loads. Calculations were made based on the finite element method using Abaqus software. Two computation models were used; in the first one, RC slab was used, and the other was without it. The effect of RC slab to deformations of CSP shell was determined. Comparing the computational results from two numerical models, it can be concluded that when the relieving slab is applied, substantial reductions in displacements, stresses, bending mo­ments and axial thrusts are achieved. Relative reductions of displacements were in the range of 53–66%, and stresses of 73–82%. Maximum displacements and bending moments were obtained at the shell crown, and maximum stresses and axial thrusts at the quarter points. The calculation results were also compared to the values from experimental tests. The course of computed displacements and stresses is similar to those obtained from experimental tests, although the absolute values were generally higher than the measured ones. Results of numerical analyses can be useful for bridge engineering, with particular regard to bridges and culverts made from corrugated steel plates for the range of necessity of using additional relieving elements.

The width of normal cracks at the level of tensile reinforcement was calculated according to various methods using the data obtained from experimental tests on reinforced concrete beams (without reinforcement pre-stress), pre-cast reinforced concrete slabs and ribbed roof slabs. Th e numerical results were compared to actual crack widths measured during the experimental tests. Also, the crack widths of pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams were calculated according to various methods and compared with each other. Th e following conclusions were reached based on the analysis of numerical and experimental results: 1) Design stresses in tensile reinforcement calculated according to [STR] and [EC] design codes are very similar, although the calculation of such stresses is more logical and simple according to [EC]. Design stresses calculated according to [RU] are greater due to the estimation of the plastic deformations of concrete in the compressive zone. Th e method proposed by Rozenbliumas (Розенблюмас 1966) estimates tensile concrete above the crack peak, and thus allows a more accurate calculation of stresses in tensile reinforcement (Fig 3). Therefore, the latter stresses in pre-stressed RC beams may be decreased by 10–12 %, when height hct ≠ 0 (Fig 1, c) and ratio M/MRd varies between 0,65 and 0,75; 2) The widths of normal cracks in conventional RC beams (subjected to load that corresponds approx. 70 % of their carrying capacity) calculated according to [STR] and [EC] design codes are almost equal to the experimentally obtained crack widths. When beams and slabs are loaded by approximately 52 % of their carrying capacity, design crack widths wk [EC] are approximately 12 % less than wk [STR], although the design crack width wk [RU] is signifi cantly greater. Here, ratio β in the beams and slabs is equal to 2 and 3.3 respectively. Th erefore, the design code [RU] ensures higher probability that the crack width will not reach the limit value (for environmental class XO and XC1) equal in all design codes mentioned in this article; 3) In case of loaded prestressed reinforced concrete beams, the calculated increases of crack widths wk [EC], wk [RU] and w [5] are greater if compared to wk [STR] (Fig 6). Th e increased reinforcement ratio ρ has more signifi cant infl uence on the increases of crack widths calculated according to other design codes if compared to wk [STR]. Tensile concrete above the crack peak has signifi cant infl uence on the design crack width when pre-stressed RC beams are lightly reinforced (ρ ≤ 0,008); 4) During the evaluation of the state of fl exural RC members, expression (5) could be used for calculating the crack width or a position of the neutral axis when the heights of the crack and the tensile zone above the crack are known (calculated or measured experimentally). Design crack widths w (5) are very similar to the experimentally obtained results.

Reinforced concrete is perhaps the most widely used building material in the world. However, the materials used for reinforcement of concrete i.e. steel is quite expensive and scarcely available in the developing world. As a result, bamboo is considered to be a cheaper replacement with high tensile strength. This research investigated the structural behaviour of bamboo-reinforced concrete slabs used for footplate foundation subjected to concentrated load. For this purpose, four different reinforced concrete slab panels were developed and analyzed. The influence of replacing steel with bamboo for the reinforcement of concrete slabs on their structural behaviour was assessed by determining the load-deflection characteristics, the ultimate load, the stiffness, the ductility, the cracking pattern, and the energy absorption capacity. The results showed that in comparison to steel reinforced concrete slabs, the strength of 82% can be acquired by the bamboo reinforced slabs. Furthermore, ductility demonstrated by the two types of specimens was almost equivalent i.e. up to 93%. Those indicated that the structural behaviour demonstrated by bamboo reinforced slabs is quite comparable to that of steel reinforced concrete slabs. Therefore, bamboo can prove to be a promising substitute for steel in concrete reinforcement. Future studies may further examine this opportunity.

Data from the Tsubota et al. (1993) experiments provided the basis for a numerical study that investigated the impact response of steel-plate lined, reinforced concrete panels using the SPH formulation in LS-DYNA. The simulated tests involved 50 mm (1.97 in), 70 mm (2.76 in), and 90 mm (3.54 in) thick reinforced concrete (RC) panels with steel liners and one 50-mm thick benchmark RC panel. Three of the five panels had a steel liner attached to the back face and one had a steel liner on both faces. The panels were normally impacted by a 39.6 mm (1.56 in) diameter projectile at a velocity of 170 m/s (6693 in/s). Reasonable predictions of observed damage, including perforation, liner fracture or bulging, and concrete scabbing were achieved using the MAT072R3 concrete material model. The effectiveness of adding steel liners to a concrete panel to prevent perforation and scabbing resulting from projectile impact was investigated using the numerical model and MAT072R3. Installing a steel liner on the back face of a panel, with a reinforcement ratio equal to that of the internal reinforcement, is an effective method to mitigate scabbing but has little effect on perforation resistance.

The behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) and reinforced engineered cementitious composites (ECC) was comparatively investigated at the component and system levels through a small-scale (1/8 scale factor) experimental program. The logistical and financial advantages of small-scale testing were utilized to investigate a range of parameters, including the effect of reinforcement ratio and material properties, on the response of reinforced concrete and reinforced ECC structures. The procedures pertaining to material preparation, specimen construction, and input motion development that were critical for enhancing the similarity between the scales are provided. Engineered cementitious composite mixtures with different cost and sustainability indices were evaluated. Under cyclic loading, the stiffness, strength, ductility, and energy absorption capacity of columns made of different ECC mixtures were found to be 110, 65, 45, and 100% higher, respectively, than those of the RC columns. The system level investigation through hybrid simulation showed that the ECC structures sustain less deformation under earthquake excitation due to high energy absorption capacity of the material. The differences in cost, sustainability, and structural performance of different ECC mixtures suggest that a careful selection of materials is required for optimal performance.
