A current environmental problem is the presence of radon inside the house. Radon (222Rn) is a noble, colourless and odourless gas that comes from radioactive elements naturally present in rocks and soil. Being gas, it is released from the ground with a tendency to concentrate in closed spaces such as caves, mines, cellars but also in any rooms in the basement, ground floor or with poor ventilation. Due to the differences between the temperature inside and the soil, the radon in the soil will move naturally to the interior of the houses, concentrating in closed rooms. The accumulation of radon inside buildings is a consequence of technological progress. Insulation work, tightly closed windows, poor ventilation of rooms lead to unobservable increase in radon concentration inside. In this paper we aim to present the values of the concentration of radon accumulated inside a house depending on the way of insulating the floor.

Polarimetry is today a widely used and powerful tool for nondestructive analysis of the structural and morphological properties of a great variety of material samples, including aerosols and hydrosols, among many others. For each given scattering measurement configuration, absolute Mueller polarimeters provide the most complete polarimetric information, intricately encoded in the 16 parameters of the corresponding Mueller matrix. Thus, the determination of the mathematical structure of the polarimetric information contained in a Mueller matrix constitutes a topic of great interest. In this work, besides a structural decomposition that makes explicit the role played by the diattenuation-polarizance of a general depolarizing medium, a universal synthesizer of Muller matrices is developed. This is based on the concept of an enpolarizing ellipsoid, whose symmetry features are directly linked to the way in which the polarimetric information is organized.

In one former communication “On the Vapour Densities of Potas­sium and Sodium,” we pointed out the chief obstacles which lay in the way of an exact determination of these constants. Having overcome the chief manipulative difficulties in connexion with the method we described, there still remained the problem for solution as to how far the use of iron bottles in our experiments might affect the results. If the iron retained the metals or allowed their vapours to diffuse with rapidity through it, a considerable error might be produced without its being easily detected.

Our attention has been directed for some time to a new determination of the atomic weight of manganese. This communication gives a succinct account of the results of the preliminary stages of such an inquiry, and although the further progress of the investigation may reveal some errors, still we feel convinced the final numbers can in no way differ materially from the present values, and therefore further delay in publication is unnecessary. The atomic weight of manganese has been determined by many chemists, but the resulting values vary considerably according to the special method selected. The results of the different investigators may be divided into two classes—those giving approximately 55 as the number, and those making it about 54. To the former class belong Turner, Berzelius, and Dumas, all of whom use the same method, viz., the determination of the silver chloride yielded by a weighed amount of chloride of manganese. Turner also made determinations from the analysis of the carbonate, and from the conversion of the monoxide into sulphate. Von Hauer used the same method as that employed by him in the determination of the atomic weight of cadmium, viz., the reduction of manganous sulphate to sulphide by ignition in a current of sulphuretted hydrogen. It is probable that this method is not very trustworthy, as, according to Schneider, the sulphide may be contaminated by oxysulphide. Schneider and Rawack belong to the second class of observers, the former employing the oxalate, and from its analysis calculating the atomic weight by deducting the weight of water and carbon dioxide obtained. Rawack, whose experiments were conducted in Schneider’s laboratory, weighed the water obtained by reducing manganoso-manganic oxide to manganous oxide.

A current question being debated with considerable intensity is whether or not certain geographic areas act as centers of evolutionary radiation and supply species to other areas that are less active or less effective in an evolutionary sense. Darwin (1859) was the first to write about centers of origin which he called “single centers of creation.” He argued that each species was first produced within a single region and that it subsequently migrated from that area as far as its powers of migration and subsistence under past and present conditions permitted. Adams (1902), in discussing the influence of the southeastern United States as a center of distribution for the flora and fauna of North America, provided a series of criteria for the determination of “centers of dispersal.” His first, and evidently most important criterion was the location of “the greatest differentiation of a type.”

In 2007-2008 the world food crisis has substantially aggravated. This is a good reason to ponder over the fate of our technological civilization and a reminder of the finite nature of the resources used by the mankind. These resources include minerals, land suitable for cultivation, water and, at last, the technologies for securing the growing world population with the foods. The crisis has opened the eyes of many enthusiasts of the scientific and technological progress to some of its bitter fruits, in particular, to the polarization of food production and consumption, hunger and poverty of millions human beings, environmental pollution, progressive exhaustion of resources. Still, there are enough reasons to be optimistic. Earth's civilization has survived many turning points and has always found the way out and the methods to resolve the problem. It may be hoped that the humanity will also found the way out from the maze of problems that showed up as a result of the food crisis, at least in the foreseeable future.

Discontinuities in the products that occur during manufacture, mounting or upon operation can be missed during non-destructive testing which do not provide their complete detectability at a current level of the technology. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account that certain structural elements may have discontinuities of significant dimensions. We present the results of using the methods of probability theory in studying the residual imperfections that remains in the structure after non-destructive control and repair of the previously identified defects. We used the results of operational control of units carried out by ultrasonic and radiographic methods. We present a method for determining a multifactorial coefficient that takes into account the detectability of defects, the number of control procedures and the errors in the instrumentation and methodological support, as well as a generalized equation for the probability distribution of detecting discontinuities. The developed approach provides assessing of the level of damage to the studied objects, their classification proceeding from the quantitative data and determination of the values of postulated discontinuities for deterministic calculations. The results obtained can be used to improve the methods of monitoring NPP facilities.

I. While so much improvement has recently taken place in the arrangement and construction of various tables for facilitating calculations founded on existing data, very little has been done in the way of investigating and correcting the data themselves; and it is feared that the question of the rate of mortality among select lives is still involved in the greatest doubt and obscurity.II. It is not proposed in the present paper to go farther than to show that the rate of mortality, during the first year of selection, of select assured lives is so materially different from what it has hitherto been represented, as to lead to the inference that the data from which the erroneous deduction has been made cannot be true data for the ascertainment of the value of selection. To investigate the rate of mortality of select lives at separate ages, I conceive to be of the utmost importance for the elucidation of truth, and the proper direction of sanatory inquiries; but I do not consider that sufficient data at present exist for the determination of this, and these can only be obtained by a united inquiry. I shall be very happy if the present observations have any effect in hastening such an investigation, which sooner or later must be entered upon.

The method to calculate rock pressure for shallow asymmetric tunnel is analyzed by means of taking a mountainous tunnel with semicircular crown and straight sidewall as the object in this paper. The calculation method of tunnel rock pressure has been presented with consideration of both tunnel structure size and its overburden depth. Finally the way to determine the shallow or profound depth of asymmetric tunnel is also obtained.


Experiments in which single particles are studied with the aid of counters would, in principle, lead to an exact determination of the statistical laws governing the behaviour of these particles if the number of counted particles were infinitely large. With a finite number of counts, however, a finite statistical error will always remain. This error depends upon the number of counts and upon the way in which one makes use of the counter readings to calculate the parameters entering into the statistical laws. The purpose of the following investigation is to show for some typical cases which way of calculating has to be adopted in order to make the error a minimum.
