In order to study the influence of roundness error on the oil film characteristics of journal bearing rotor system, a dynamic model of journal bearing rotor system with roundness error was established, and a new generalized roundness error equation is derived based on the small displacement screw (SDT) theory. And the influence of roundness error screw parameter dx represented by SDT on critical speed and stability of sliding bearing is analyzed emphatically. The results show that the existence of journal roundness error is beneficial to the bearing capacity and stability of sliding bearing rotor system to a certain extent, and with the increase of roundness error screw parameter, its promoting effect is more obvious; At the same time, the critical speed of the system will increase with the increase of screw parameter, especially when eccentricity ε>0.6; And when Sommerfeld number S>0.6, the roundness error of journal has little influence on stability.

In view of the numerical instability and low accuracy of the traditional transfer matrix method in solving the high-order critical speed of the rotor system, a new idea of incorporating the finite element method into the transfer matrix is proposed. Based on the variational principle, the transfer symplectic matrix of gyro rotors suitable for all kinds of boundary conditions and supporting conditions under the Hamilton system is derived by introducing dual variables. To verify the proposed method in rotor critical speed, a numerical analysis is adopted. The simulation experiment results show that, in the calculation of high-order critical speed, especially when exceeding the sixth critical speed, the numerical accuracy of the transfer symplectic matrix method is obviously better than that of the reference method. The relative errors between the numerical solution and the exact solution are 0.0347% and 0.2228%, respectively, at the sixth critical speed. The numerical example indicates the feasibility and superiority of the method, which provides the basis for the optimal design of the rotor system.

In this study, the pneumatic hammer instability phenomena in the aerostatic journal bearing–rotor system is analysed and discussed for different feeding hole configurations theoretically and experimentally. The influences of the configuration of the feeding holes on the nonlinear dynamics of the system are also investigated. The air flow between the surfaces is modelled with Reynold’s equation and it is numerically solved with differential transform and finite difference hybrid method. Three different aerostatic bearings are modelled and simulated to investigate the ınfluences of the configuration of the holes for different angular speeds. An experimental test rig is designed and tested for different rotor speeds to validate the obtained numerical results. The dynamic response of the system is analysed using waterfall plots, bifurcation diagrams, orbit plots, phase portrait and Poincaré map, which are drawn to determine the pneumatic hammer instability region of the modelled system. The results reveal a nonlinear dynamic response of the rotor centre. In addition, the analysis shows that the feeding hole configuration affects the rotor dynamics and the pneumatic hammer instability region.

The paper establishes the mechanical model of SFD-sliding bearing flexible rotor system, adopting Runge-Kutta method to solve nonlinear differential equation, thus acquiring the unbalanced response curve and then gaining the first two critical speeds of the system. Meanwhile, the paper analyzes the sensitivity of the system on the first two critical speeds towards structural parameters, offering design variables to optimization analysis. Based on sensitivity analysis, genetic algorithm is employed to give an optimization analysis on critical speed, which aims to remove critical speed from working speed as much as possible. The critical speed ameliorates after the optimization which supplies theoretical basis as well as theoretical analysis towards the dynamic stability of high-speed rotor system and provides reference for the design of such rotor system.

An investigation of the compound texture effect on the dynamic characteristics of the journal bearing film is conducted. In this work, eight dynamic coefficients of the compound textured journal bearing and critical speed of the rotor supported by textured bearings are obtained and compared. Meanwhile, the elastic deformation effect of the bearing and rotor is obtained using the continuous convolution fast Fourier transform (CC-FFT) method. It is found that the reasonably arranged compound texture brings out an obvious increment in the direct stiffness coefficients and damping coefficients compared with the simple one, which results in the high critical speed of the bearing-rotor system. The above changes are close to the texture distribution, second-layered texture length, and width-length ratios of the compound texture. Moreover, there exists a critical compound texture depth to improve the critical speed of the bearing-rotor system.

The transient response of a misaligned rotor—coupling—bearing system passing through the critical speed has been analysed by using the finite element method (FEM) for flexural vibrations. The coupling has been modelled in two ways: a frictionless joint and a joint with stiffness and damping. From the vibration analysis, the subcritical speeds at one-half, one-third and one-fourth the critical speed have been found when the misaligned rotor—coupling—bearing system passes through its critical speed. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has been used as a tool to extract the silent features from the time response of the rotor system. A parametric study has been carried out to investigate the transient response of this rotor system for different angular accelerations in different types of misalignment.

The article describes the effect of a magnetic field applied to a ferrofluid–lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearing–rotor system. A rotor with a single journal bearing in one end was built to be the test rig. The experimental results showed that 3 to 8 permanent magnets, arranged by different methods, can all increase the instability threshold of the oil bearing. Especially, the magnetic field formed by eight magnets has the optimal effect. The whirl speed and the whip speed can be increased from 3024 rpm to 4480 rpm, and from 3184 rpm to 5268 rpm.

In this paper, a rotordynamic experiment on a compressor rotor system is presented and the feasibility of gas foil bearings with inhomogeneous bump foils is verified. A push–pull device is designed to obtain the stiffness curve and the nominal clearance of foil bearings. Operating points and dynamic coefficients of the rotor system at each rotating speed are predicted. In rotordynamic analysis, an alternative model of the impeller is proposed and the critical speed is predicted by employing the finite element method, in which the dynamic coefficients of inhomogeneous foil bearings are taken into account. Compared with the experimental result, the accuracy of the prediction for the critical speed is verified to be about 14% error. Two sets of foil bearings with 22 and 41 μm nominal clearance are manufactured and tested. Test results indicate that the vibration amplitude can be greatly reduced by diminishing the bearing clearance. When foil bearings with 22 μm clearance are used, the high-order harmonic frequencies of rotor vibration are significantly inhibited, and the amplitude of the rotating frequency is obviously restricted. Thus, the foil bearing with inhomogeneous bump foils tested in this paper can meet the speed requirement of the compressor when the nominal clearance is set at 22 μm.

This paper deals with shape memory alloy. As a first step to assess the applicability of this kind of alloy in a structural system, a tension bar made of this kind of alloy that exhibits pseudo-elasticity at room temperature is used herein as a passive bracing system. This paper describes sub-structure pseudo-dynamic tests on pseudo-elastic bracing system with hysteretic damper. A pseudo-elastic bracing system is better to be used with other hysteretic elements such as a hysteretic damper. A damper provides energy dissipation within small displacement levels, and a pseudo-elastic bracing system works in turn as a back-up/fail-safe system when an accidental failure of damper or damper interface occurs, and also it helps to pull back the structure to the original position by uninstalling the damper after earthquake.

Aiming at the structural form of a certain rotor system, a double-span three-support rotor system model is established. It is supported by three rolling bearings and has a typical nonlinear characteristic. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the differential equations and analyze the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the rotor system when the radial clearance of the bearing changed. The research results: with the increase of the rear bearing radial clearance, the rotor system performs single cycle, periodic two and pseudo-periodic motion. With the three location bearing radial clearance increases, the rotor system performs single cycle, periodic two and periodic four motion. When the radial clearance is bigger, the rotor system performs two periodic motion. The influence law of radial clearance on double span three - braced rotor system is shown.
