Abstract Objective Traumatic dental injury (TDI) is a common dental concern among children worldwide. We performed a retrospective patient register study among children under 18 years to investigate TDIs with respect to causes, treatment, and complications. Materials and Methods  We collected information on TDIs from the original patient records of 407 child patients visiting dental clinic of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas, Lithuania. We analyzed all child patients’ (n = 407) background, cause, type of TDI, treatment, complications, and time elapsed from injury to visit to the dentist. Statistical Analysis The χ 2-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests served in the statistical analyses. Results A total of 579 TDI cases occurred during 2010 to 2016. Lateral luxation (19.8%) and intrusion (14.8%) occurred more often in the primary than the permanent dentition (p < 0.05). The most common cause of TDI was falling (56%). Avulsion occurred in approximately 10% of cases. Follow-up (44.5%) and tooth extraction (48.3%) were the most frequent treatments in the primary and splinting (25.3%) in the permanent teeth. Pulp necrosis was the most frequent complication in primary (92%) and permanent (54%) dentition. About 1% of the patients obtained dental care during the first hour after injury. Conclusion The most frequent TDIs included lateral luxation in primary teeth and enamel-dentine fractures in permanent teeth. We observed a delay in patients obtaining emergency dental care.

The purpose of this unique case report is to describe a very unusual dentoalveolar fracture associated with avulsion of the near-complete root. A 3-year-old male patient came for consultation after a dentoalveolar trauma with a “fragment that looks like canine” found in his mouth by his mother. This boy suffered root fracture of the upper primary central right incisor, accompanied by transalveolar and transmuco-gingival avulsion of the tooth root fragment, leaving the crown in its position in the dental arch. Clinical and radiological examinations were performed in order to follow up the case: 15 days, one month, and three months after trauma, the crown had a slight mobility without other clinical or radiological signs. After six months, the upper primary central right incisor’s crown was exfoliated. Open bite due to the persistence of the pacifier habit favored the crown retention in the mouth. This case emphasizes the importance of primary diagnosis and follow-up of trauma cases. To the best of our knowledge, this kind of dental injury has not been previously described in the literature nor in the current Dental Trauma guidelines for the management of traumatic dental injuries in the primary dentition.

Dental trauma is very common, especially in children and adolescents. Tooth avulsion (exarticulation), which is a result of complete rupture of periodontal ligaments is one of the most severe dental injuries. The treatment of choice in avulsion of permanent teeth is reimplantation. Survival of reimplanted teeth depends greatly on the time and conditions in which teeth were stored outside the oral cavity. This report presents a case of 18-year old male with avulsion of central maxillary incisors. The teeth were reimplanted 14 hours after injury. During 8-year follow up no major complications occurred and the teeth still maintain their function, although signs of mild replacement resorption are visible on the follow-up radiographs.

Objective:The primary aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the effects of home accidents(HAs) on the traumatic dental injuries(TDIs) of primary teeth. Furthermore, the secondary aim was to bring attention to the importance of preventive measures for HAs, especially in this pandemic period where children all over the world spend most of their time in their homes due to coronavirus(COVID-19) disease. Material and Methods:The records of the patients with TDIs of the primary teeth, aged 6 months-8 years, who applied to the xxxxxxxxxUniversity, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics, between the years 2000¬2010 and yyyyyyyyUniversity, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics, between the years 2012–2019 were investigated. Results:The sample consisted of 504 children that had TDIs to the primary teeth. The age range of the children was 1–8 years(3.5±1.8years old) and 37.3%(n=188) of the patients were girls and 62.7%(n=316) boys. The prevalence of the TDIs due to HAs was found to be 43.25%(n=218). A total of 380 teeth in the 218 patients who were found to have TDIs due to HAs were examined. The highest prevalence of traumatized children was in the age range 2-4 years(63.3%). Collisions with objects(45%) were found to be most common causes of dental trauma and the most common type of injury was found to be lateral luxation(35.8%). Conclusions:Measures to prevent HAs should primarily target preschool children, the riskiest group. Accidents can be largely prevented by taking simple precautions such as providing a safe environment for children's healthy mental and physical development at home. ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of primary and intermediate schoolteachers about the management of TDIs in Al-Madinah city, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: A previously validated, self-administered, anonymous, close-ended structured questionnaire was administered to schoolteachers in 13 different schools. It included two parts: basic demographic information (part one) and questions regarding the management of dental traumatic injuries (part two). Results: A total of 178 schoolteachers voluntarily completely filled in the questionnaire. Nearly 28.1% of the teachers acquired a first-aid training program and 6.2% only learned about dental injury management in first-aid training. Concerning the knowledge about the management of dental traumatic injuries, 55.1% of teachers realized the appropriate time for treatment of dental traumatic injuries. A few percentage of teachers selected correct answers for the suitable storage medium. The most commonly selected storage media were found to be cold milk, physiological saline, and patient's saliva at 14.6%, 6.7%, and 2.2%, respectively. Conclusion: The knowledge among primary and intermediate schoolteachers in the management of dental traumatic injuries is unsatisfactory.

Destructive forms of periodontal disease in children are uncommon. Severe periodontal destruction can be a manifestation of a systemic disease; however, in some patients, the underlying cause of increased susceptibility and early onset is still unknown. Objective: To describe an effective therapeutic approach to Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis (GAgP) in children, based on a 3-1/2 year-old male patient referred to the Hospital due to early loss of incisors, gingivitis,and tooth mobility in his primary dentition. Intraoral examination revealed severe gingival inflammation,dental abscesses, pathological tooth mobility, bleeding upon probing and attachment loss around several primary teeth. Dental radiographs revealed horizontal and vertical bone loss. Treatment consisted on the extraction of severely affected primary teeth, systemic antibiotics, deep scaling of remaining teeth and strict oral hygiene measures. Once the patient's periodontal condition was stabilized, function and esthetics were restored with "pedi-partials." After a follow-up period of nearly 4 years, the patient's periodontal status remains healthy, facilitating the eruption of permanent teeth. Conclusion: Prompt diagnosis and good treatment regimen may provide an effective therapeutic management of Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis.

Objective: Cervical or furcal root perforation is a serious clinical problem and one of its treatment modalities is perforation repair with composite resin. However, many cases still progress in inevitable extraction. When primary teeth are affected, early tooth loss can cause problems related to the eruption space for the permanent successors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a novel clinical treatment method for perforated teeth. Study design: Atelocollagen was applied to perforated furcal and cervical areas of 13 primary teeth in 13 children aged 4-9 years and 8 permanent teeth in 8 adults aged 35-69 years after debridement with an electric knife. Thereafter, the final restorations were performed after confirming good tooth conditions. Clinical evaluations were performed at follow-up examinations at approximately 3-month intervals.Results: None of the treated primary teeth showed any clinical problems throughout the observation period, with eruption of the permanent successors noted in 7 cases. In the permanent teeth, no clinical problems were identified in any of the cases during follow-up periods of 10-60 months. Conclusion: This novel method may enable preservation of perforated primary teeth for a longer duration.

Introduction: Traumatic dental injury is an injury inflicted on the dentoalveolar system. It has a physical as well as a psychological impact. Despite this concern, epidemiological data regarding its prevalence is insufficient in the literature of Nepal. Hence, this study’s objective was to investigate the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries for the patients visiting Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairahawa, Nepal, over five years. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using records from the medical record section for the patients presenting at the dental emergency outpatient department of the Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairahawa, Nepal, between April 2014 and April 2019. Ethical approval was taken from the Institutional Review Committee of the Universal College of Medical Sciences. Patient demographic data, type of traumatic dental injuries, and etiologies were evaluated from the record section. Results: Out of 10,080 patients registered during the study period, 793 patients (7.86%) were due to traumatic dental injury, out of which 628 (79.2%) were male, and 165 (20.8%) were female. The most vulnerable age group was 20-29 years (42.4%). Most frequently, injuries occurred in June (16%). Road traffic accidents (57.8 %) were the most common mode, and complicated crown-root fracture (23.3%) was the most common type of traumatic dental injury. Conclusions: The frequency of 7.86% of traumatic dental injury indicates that dental traumatology needs special attention for policy planning and professional training.
