Machine Learning for Detection of Correct Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Tip Position from Radiology Reports in Infants

Abstract Background In critically ill infants, the position of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) must be confirmed frequently, as the tip may move from its original position and run the risk of hyperosmolar vascular damage or extravasation into surrounding spaces. Automated detection of PICC tip position holds great promise for alerting bedside clinicians to noncentral PICCs. Objectives This research seeks to use natural language processing (NLP) and supervised machine learning (ML) techniques to predict PICC tip position based primarily on text analysis of radiograph reports from infants with an upper extremity PICC. Methods Radiographs, containing a PICC line in infants under 6 months of age, were manually classified into 12 anatomical locations based on the radiologist's textual report of the PICC line's tip. After categorization, we performed a 70/30 train/test split and benchmarked the performance of seven different (neural network, support vector machine, the naïve Bayes, decision tree, random forest, AdaBoost, and K-nearest neighbors) supervised ML algorithms. After optimization, we calculated accuracy, precision, and recall of each algorithm's ability to correctly categorize the stated location of the PICC tip. Results A total of 17,337 radiographs met criteria for inclusion and were labeled manually. Interrater agreement was 99.1%. Support vector machines and neural networks yielded accuracies as high as 98% in identifying PICC tips in central versus noncentral position (binary outcome) and accuracies as high as 95% when attempting to categorize the individual anatomical location (12-category outcome). Conclusion Our study shows that ML classifiers can automatically extract the anatomical location of PICC tips from radiology reports. Two ML classifiers, support vector machine (SVM) and a neural network, obtained top accuracies in both binary and multiple category predictions. Implementing these algorithms in a neonatal intensive care unit as a clinical decision support system may help clinicians address PICC line position.

Existing accelerometer-based human activity recognition (HAR) benchmark datasets that were recorded during free living suffer from non-fixed sensor placement, the usage of only one sensor, and unreliable annotations. We make two contributions in this work. First, we present the publicly available Human Activity Recognition Trondheim dataset (HARTH). Twenty-two participants were recorded for 90 to 120 min during their regular working hours using two three-axial accelerometers, attached to the thigh and lower back, and a chest-mounted camera. Experts annotated the data independently using the camera’s video signal and achieved high inter-rater agreement (Fleiss’ Kappa =0.96). They labeled twelve activities. The second contribution of this paper is the training of seven different baseline machine learning models for HAR on our dataset. We used a support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, extreme gradient boost, convolutional neural network, bidirectional long short-term memory, and convolutional neural network with multi-resolution blocks. The support vector machine achieved the best results with an F1-score of 0.81 (standard deviation: ±0.18), recall of 0.85±0.13, and precision of 0.79±0.22 in a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation. Our highly professional recordings and annotations provide a promising benchmark dataset for researchers to develop innovative machine learning approaches for precise HAR in free living.

Neonatal infants communicate with us through cries. The infant cry signals have distinct patterns depending on the purpose of the cries. Preprocessing, feature extraction, and feature selection need expert attention and take much effort in audio signals in recent days. In deep learning techniques, it automatically extracts and selects the most important features. For this, it requires an enormous amount of data for effective classification. This work mainly discriminates the neonatal cries into pain, hunger, and sleepiness. The neonatal cry auditory signals are transformed into a spectrogram image by utilizing the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) technique. The deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) technique takes the spectrogram images for input. The features are obtained from the convolutional neural network and are passed to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Machine learning technique classifies neonatal cries. This work combines the advantages of machine learning and deep learning techniques to get the best results even with a moderate number of data samples. The experimental result shows that CNN-based feature extraction and SVM classifier provides promising results. While comparing the SVM-based kernel techniques, namely radial basis function (RBF), linear and polynomial, it is found that SVM-RBF provides the highest accuracy of kernel-based infant cry classification system provides 88.89% accuracy.

Soil erosion induced by rainfall is a critical problem in many regions in the world, particularly in tropical areas where the annual rainfall amount often exceeds 2000 mm. Predicting soil erosion is a challenging task, subjecting to variation of soil characteristics, slope, vegetation cover, land management, and weather condition. Conventional models based on the mechanism of soil erosion processes generally provide good results but are time-consuming due to calibration and validation. The goal of this study is to develop a machine learning model based on support vector machine (SVM) for soil erosion prediction. The SVM serves as the main prediction machinery establishing a nonlinear function that maps considered influencing factors to accurate predictions. In addition, in order to improve the accuracy of the model, the history-based adaptive differential evolution with linear population size reduction and population-wide inertia term (L-SHADE-PWI) is employed to find an optimal set of parameters for SVM. Thus, the proposed method, named L-SHADE-PWI-SVM, is an integration of machine learning and metaheuristic optimization. For the purpose of training and testing the method, a dataset consisting of 236 samples of soil erosion in Northwest Vietnam is collected with 10 influencing factors. The training set includes 90% of the original dataset; the rest of the dataset is reserved for assessing the generalization capability of the model. The experimental results indicate that the newly developed L-SHADE-PWI-SVM method is a competitive soil erosion predictor with superior performance statistics. Most importantly, L-SHADE-PWI-SVM can achieve a high classification accuracy rate of 92%, which is much better than that of backpropagation artificial neural network (87%) and radial basis function artificial neural network (78%).

<p class="Abstrak">Cuaca merupakan faktor penting yang dipertimbangkan untuk berbagai pengambilan keputusan. Klasifikasi cuaca manual oleh manusia membutuhkan waktu yang lama dan inkonsistensi. <em>Computer vision</em> adalah cabang ilmu yang digunakan komputer untuk mengenali atau melakukan klasifikasi citra. Hal ini dapat membantu pengembangan <em>self autonomous machine</em> agar tidak bergantung pada koneksi internet dan dapat melakukan kalkulasi sendiri secara <em>real time</em>. Terdapat beberapa algoritma klasifikasi citra populer yaitu K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), dan Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). KNN dan SVM merupakan algoritma klasifikasi dari <em>Machine Learning</em> sedangkan CNN merupakan algoritma klasifikasi dari Deep Neural Network. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan performa dari tiga algoritma tersebut sehingga diketahui berapa gap performa diantara ketiganya. Arsitektur uji coba yang dilakukan adalah menggunakan 5 cross validation. Beberapa parameter digunakan untuk mengkonfigurasikan algoritma KNN, SVM, dan CNN. Dari hasil uji coba yang dilakukan CNN memiliki performa terbaik dengan akurasi 0.942, precision 0.943, recall 0.942, dan F1 Score 0.942.</p><p class="Abstrak"> </p><p class="Abstrak"><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p><p class="Abstract"><em>Weather is an important factor that is considered for various decision making. Manual weather classification by humans is time consuming and inconsistent. Computer vision is a branch of science that computers use to recognize or classify images. This can help develop self-autonomous machines so that they are not dependent on an internet connection and can perform their own calculations in real time. There are several popular image classification algorithms, namely K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). KNN and SVM are Machine Learning classification algorithms, while CNN is a Deep Neural Networks classification algorithm. This study aims to compare the performance of that three algorithms so that the performance gap between the three is known. The test architecture is using 5 cross validation. Several parameters are used to configure the KNN, SVM, and CNN algorithms. From the test results conducted by CNN, it has the best performance with 0.942 accuracy, 0.943 precision, 0.942 recall, and F1 Score 0.942.</em></p><p class="Abstrak"><em><strong><br /></strong></em></p>

Mobile Technologies have been in trend for quite some time and with the advances in machine learning, they have become more powerful. Computer Vision, Computational Analysis and Computer Graphics have changed over the course of time. In this Project, our aim is to figure out the domains in which Machine Learning can be applied to enhance the capabilities of a Mobile Device which would lead to a better and sustainable mobile user experience.  The models we would use are a convolutional neural network (CNN), support vector machine (SVM) and scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT). This project uses the real-time image from a mobile device and does the classification and detection with the help of Tensor Flow and provides the result with a confidence score.

In this paper, a machine learning-based framework is developed to quickly evaluate the structural safety of trusses. Three numerical examples of a 10-bar truss, a 25-bar truss, and a 47-bar truss are used to illustrate the proposed framework. Firstly, several truss cases with different cross-sectional areas are generated by employing the Latin Hypercube Sampling method. Stresses inside truss members as well as displacements of nodes are determined through finite element analyses and obtained values are compared with design constraints. According to the constraint verification, the safety state is assigned as safe or unsafe. Members’ sectional areas and the safety state are stored as the inputs and outputs of the training dataset, respectively. Three popular machine learning classifiers including Support Vector Machine, Deep Neural Network, and Adaptive Boosting are used for evaluating the safety of structures. The comparison is conducted based on two metrics: the accuracy and the area under the ROC curve. For the two first examples, three classifiers get more than 90% of accuracy. For the 47-bar truss, the accuracies of the Support Vector Machine model and the Deep Neural Network model are lower than 70% but the Adaptive Boosting model still retains the high accuracy of approximately 98%. In terms of the area under the ROC curve, the comparative results are similar. Overall, the Adaptive Boosting model outperforms the remaining models. In addition, an investigation is carried out to show the influence of the parameters on the performance of the Adaptive Boosting model.
