Rectal erosions after ventral rectopexy (VR) is an uncommon but challenging adverse event and can be associated with partial migration of the mesh into the intestinal cavity. Re-do surgery is difficult and often provides colostomy and/or anterior rectal resections. However, no alternative solutions are described in the available literature. An 82-year-old woman presented to our hospital for rectal erosion and intraluminal migration of the mesh placed at a 1-year laparoscopic VR. We performed an innovative totally endoscopic approach, using thulium laser and two endoscopes, that led to a successful removal of the mesh. The described mini-invasive technique can be an effective alternative to surgery in tertiary referral centres.

The lifetime and properties of cutting tools and forming moulds can be prolonged and enhanced by the deposition of hard, thin coatings. After a certain period of usage, the coating will deteriorate. Any remaining coating must be removed prior to successful recoating. Laser stripping is a fast and environmentally friendly coating removal method. In this paper, we present laser removal of two types of coatings deposited on a 1.2379 tool steel substrate, namely, an AlTiN coating with high hardness and a DLC C coating with a small coefficient of friction (COF). A powerful nanosecond laser was employed to remove the coating from the substrate with high efficiency, along with suitable residual surface roughness. Measurements were taken of surface roughness, removed depth, and working time on a stripped area of 1 cm2. The samples were evaluated under a microscope, with a 3D profilometer, and by EDS chemical analysis. Successful removal of the coating was confirmed by optical analysis, but detailed chemical characterisation showed that about 30% of the coating element may remain on the surface. Moreover, a working time of less than 7.5 s per cm2 was obtained in this study. In addition, it was shown that the application of a second low energy, high frequency laser beam pass leads to remelting of the peaks of the material and reduced surface roughness.

Abstract Background Cannulation of a central venous catheter is sometimes associated with serious complications. When arterial cannulation occurs, attention must be given to removal of a catheter. Case presentation A 62-year-old man was planned for emergency thoracic endovascular aortic repair. After the induction of anesthesia, a central venous catheter was unintentionally inserted into the right subclavian artery. We planned to remove the catheter. Since we considered that surgical repair would be highly invasive for the patient, we decided to remove it using a percutaneous intravascular stent. A stent was inserted through the right axillary artery. The stent was expanded immediately after the catheter was removed. Post-procedural angiography revealed no leakage from the catheter insertion site and no occlusion of the right subclavian and vertebral arteries. There were no obvious hematoma or thrombotic complications. Conclusions A catheter that has been misplaced into the right subclavian artery was safely removed using an intravascular stent.

Perchlorate (ClO4−) is globally enriched in Martian regolith at levels commonly toxic to plants. Consequently, perchlorate in Martian regolith presents an obstacle to developing agriculture on Mars. Here, we assess the effect of perchlorate at different concentrations on plant growth and germination, as well as metal release in a simulated Gusev Crater regolith and generic potting soil. The presence of perchlorate was uniformly detrimental to plant growth regardless of growing medium. Plants in potting soil were able to germinate in 1 wt.% perchlorate; however, these plants showed restricted growth and decreased leaf area and biomass. Some plants were able to germinate in regolith simulant without perchlorate; however, they showed reduced growth. In Martian regolith simulant, the presence of perchlorate prevented germination across all plant treatments. Soil column flow-through experiments of perchlorate-containing Martian regolith simulant and potting soil were unable to completely remove perchlorate despite its high solubility. Additionally, perchlorate present in the simulant increased metal/phosphorous release, which may also affect plant growth and biochemistry. Our results support that perchlorate may modify metal availability to such an extent that, even with the successful removal of perchlorate, Martian regolith may continue to be toxic to plant life. Overall, our study demonstrates that the presence of perchlorate in Martian regolith provides a significant challenge in its use as an agricultural substrate and that further steps, such as restricted metal availability and nutrient enrichment, are necessary to make it a viable growing substrate.

Abstract Background Foreign bodies may be embedded or left behind in the oral cavity during oral surgical procedure. The loss of instruments such as impression material, surgical gauze, and broken injection needles are commonly reported in the dental field. These complications are generally symptomatic and show signs of inflammation, pain, and purulent discharge. Accidental breakage of suture needles is a rare but potentially dangerous event. Case presentation In this report, we present one case of lost suture needle during the procedure of flap operation at local dental clinic and its successful removal under local/general anesthesia administration via CBCT with a help of two reference needles to localize the 6-0 nylon needle and consulting with the clinician. Conclusion CT scanning taken while mouth-closing may not be accurate with regard to real location measurement performed while mouth-opening. If so, other up-to-date radiographic devices and methods to retrieve a needle are recommended.

Abstract Previous tests using a growth medium and olive mill wastewater (OMWW) have shown that it supplies carbon and electron donors suitable for sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB). We assessed the co-treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) and OMWW using SRB-enriched bioreactors and identified the most abundant bacterial populations present under optimized conditions. The process requires a neutralizing agent to create optimal pH conditions for successful removal of the AMD’s main contaminants. Concentrations of SO42−, Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn decreased to below Portugal’s maximum admissible values for irrigation waters, and all but Mn were reduced to less than Portugal’s emission limit values (ELVs) for wastewater discharges. Phenol concentrations—the main pollutants in OMWW—dropped to values between 1/10 and 1/5 their initial concentrations in batch tests using mixtures of AMD and OMWW, and to 1/2 their initial concentrations in flow-through tests. The final total phenol concentrations were still above the ELV for wastewater discharges, but phenols are not regulated in irrigation waters, and OMWW is used by some producers to irrigate soils. Six main SRB groups were identified as likely having a fundamental role in the bioremediation process: the genera Desulfovibrio, Sulfurospirillum, and Acetobacter and the families Sphingomonadaceae, Prevotellaceae, and Deferribacteraceae.
