Abstract This study explores the depictions of landscapes and emotions in the ninth-century hagiographies associated with Liudger: the three vitae Liudgeri and Liudger’s own vita Gregorii. The Frisian missionary founded the monastery of Werden, situated near the Frankish-Saxon frontier. It will be argued that previous historiography on early medieval frontiers has predominantly focused on the military nature of frontiers. Here, more cultural or symbolic natures of the Frankish-Saxon frontier will be discussed. The hagiographical narratives will be examined in conjunction with the notion of a frontier as a ‘third space’. The vitae Liudgeri shaped a discourse that legitimated Liudger’s translation to Werden. This resulted in the creation of a new place of Christian worship in the competitive landscape of post-conquest Saxony, as part of the Christianization of the region. Monasteries like Werden were the places where new missionaries were educated who would continue this Christianization. Exemplary emotional behaviour of the saints, narrated in hagiographies, could help instruct this new generation. Altfrid and Liudger tried to dissuade emotions of anger, indicated by ira or furor, with their hagiographical narratives. These two perspectives offer a glimpse into the attempts of a local monastery to stand out in the Frankish-Saxon frontier.

A growing body of preclinical and clinical evidence supports a relationship between the complexity and diversity of the microorganisms that inhabit our gut (human gastrointestinal microbiome) and health status. These microbes can influence centrally regulated emotional behaviour through mechanisms including microbially derived bioactive molecules, mucosal immune and enteroendocrine cell activation, as well as vagal nerve stimulation. Changes to the microbial environment, as a consequence of illness, stress or injury can lead to a broad spectrum of local physiological and behavioural effects including a decrease in gut barrier integrity, altered gut motility, inflammatory mediator release, as well as nociceptive and distension receptor sensitization. Impacts at a central level include alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, neuroinflammatory events and concomitant changes to neurotransmitter systems. Thus, both central and peripheral pathways associated with pain manifestation and perception are altered as a consequence of the microbiome-gut-brain axis imbalance. The dogmatic approach of antibiotic treatment in the latter century, for the treatment of many diseases and conditions, has undergone a radical change. We are 90% microbe, and pragmatism suggests that we manipulate this ecosystem for the treatment of various ailments, stress dysfunction and affective disorders, including the alleviation of visceral pain.


In this chapter, the authors focus on the importance of emotion management within the organisation. While they have previously discussed some general issues related to emotion and emotional behaviour in the workplace, it is now time to reflect on how such topics should converge in performance management techniques. Leaders, and managers in general, are required to nurture the people that are part of the organisation, thus somehow recognising the outcomes, results, and accomplishments achieved by an individual, group or organisation. Favouring an organisational culture that takes into account performance as a way to enhance people's efficiency through feedback and training opportunities, managers can improve job satisfaction and limit employees' turnaround, which in turn create a positive workplace for emotion management.

Emotional issues among child labour never received much attention as compared to physical aspects. A study was conducted in Delhi amongst the child labour and school-going children of the same socio-economic background, in this case the slums of Delhi (India) to study the behavior patterns of the children. Children within age group of 7-14 years were selected between school going and child labour category. A sample size was drawn. Five hundred children from each group were selected (n=1000) using probability proportionate sampling method across different slums. One hundred children (both 50 school-going and 50 child labour) from each slum were selected. Purposive convenience sampling technique was used to select the children in a particular slum. Strength and difficulty questionnaire (SDQ) devised by Robert Goodman was used as a tool. The children working as child labour in Delhi slums are found to be more prone to face emotional difficulties in behavioural aspects than the school-going children from the same socio-economic indicators.

AbstractPlay is a strong outwardly directed, emotional behaviour and can contagiously spread between individuals. It has been suggested that high-playing animals could ‘seed’ play in others, spreading positive affective states. Despite the current interest in play contagion there has been no previous attempt to measure the strength of the play contagion effect. The calf (Bos taurus) is ideal for testing the strength of play contagion as play in calves is strongly related to energy intake from milk. We manipulated play in calves through their milk allowances and housed the calves in uniform groups all on the same milk allowance (high = UHigh or low = ULow) or in mixed groups with calves in the same group receiving either a high (= MHigh) or low (= MLow) milk allowance. We measured locomotor play using accelerometers on two consecutive days when calves were four and eight weeks old, in order to study play contagion over a protracted developmental window. We anticipated that differences in the level of play contagion between treatment groups would result in difference in the play levels observed in the MLow and ULow individuals. Contrary to our expectations we found that spontaneous play was suppressed in the high-milk calves housed in mixed groups (MHigh), in comparison to calves housed with group mates all receiving high-milk (UHigh). These results are the first to quantify a negative play contagion effect, particularly in a situation of long-term contact, and may suggest that negative contagion has a stronger effect on play behaviour than positive contagion.
