There are two typical seismic damage characteristics to the masonry building with frame shear wall structure at first two stories, and the lateral stiffness ratio of the third storey to the second storey is one of the key factors mostly affecting the seismic performance of this kind of building. However, some factors are not considered sufficiently in current Chinese seismic codes. According to the theory of performance-based seismic design, the seismic performance of this kind of structure is analyzed in this paper by taking time-history analysis on models which with different storey stiffness ratios. The results show that when the lateral stiffness ratio controlled in a reasonable range, the upper masonry deformation can be ensured in a range of elastic roughly, and the bottom frame can be guaranteed to have sufficient deformation and energy dissipation capacity. Finally, according to the seismic performance characteristics of masonry building with frame shear wall structure at first two stories, especially the characteristics under strong earthquakes, a method of simplified calculation model for the upper masonry is discussed in this paper.

According to the working characteristics of a 1.5 MW wind turbine planetary gear system under complex and random wind load, a two-parameter Weibull distribution model is used to describe the distribution of random wind speed, and the time-varying load caused by random wind speed is obtained. The nonlinear dynamic model of planetary gear transmission system is established by using the lumped parameter method, and the relative relations among various components are derived by using Lagrange method. Then, the relative relationship between the components is solved by Runge Kutta method. Considering the influence of random load and stiffness ratio on the planetary gear transmission system, the nonlinear dynamic response of cyclic load and random wind load on the transmission system is analyzed. The analysis results show that the variation of the stiffness ratio makes the planetary gear have abundant nonlinear dynamics behavior and the planetary gear can get rid of chaos and enter into stable periodic motion by changing the stiffness ratio properly on the premise of ensuring transmission efficiency. For the variable pitch wind turbine, the random change of external load increases the instability of the system.

Pile tip absolute settlement curves and relative settlement curves of several working cases were analyzed. It is found that load-settlement curve characteristic related to the selection standard. The tip resistance initial stiffness of each case was analyzed. Results show that the small diameter pile has higher initial stiffness than large diameter pile, embedded depth has little influence on initial stiffness ratio, but increment of initial stiffness is linear with embedded depth growth.

Understanding how arterial remodeling changes the mechanical behavior of pulmonary arteries (PAs) is important to the evaluation of pulmonary vascular function. Early and current efforts have focused on the arteries' histological changes, their mechanical properties under in vitro mechanical testing, and their zero-stress and no-load states. However, the linkage between the histology and mechanical behavior is still not well understood. To explore this linkage, we investigated the geometry, residual stretch, and histology of proximal PAs in both adult rat and neonatal calf hypoxic models of pulmonary hypertension (PH), compared their changes due to chronic hypoxia across species, and proposed a two-layer mechanical model of artery to relate the opening angle to the stiffness ratio of the PA outer to inner layer. We found that the proximal PA remodeling in calves was quite different from that in rats. In rats, the arterial wall thickness, inner diameter, and outer layer thickness fraction all increased dramatically in PH and the opening angle decreased significantly, whereas in calves, only the arterial wall thickness increased in PH. The proposed model predicted that the stiffness ratio of the calf proximal PAs changed very little from control to hypertensive group, while the decrease of opening angle in rat proximal PAs in response to chronic hypoxia was approximately linear to the increase of the stiffness ratio. We conclude that the arterial remodeling in rat and calf proximal PAs is different and the change of opening angle can be linked to the change of the arterial histological structure and mechanics.

Structural plane is a key factor in controlling the stability of rock mass engineering. To study the influence of structural plane microscopic parameters on direct shear strength, this paper established the direct shear mechanical model of the structural plane by using the discrete element code PFC2D. From the mesoscopic perspective, the research on the direct shear test for structural plane has been conducted. The bonding strength and friction coefficient of the structural plane are investigated, and the effect of mesoscopic parameters on the shear mechanical behavior of the structural plane has been analyzed. The results show that the internal friction angle φ of the structural plane decreases with the increase of particle contact stiffness ratio. However, the change range of cohesion is small. The internal friction angle decreases first and then increases with the increase of parallel bond stiffness ratio. The influence of particle contact modulus EC on cohesion c is relatively small. The internal friction angle obtained by the direct shear test is larger than that obtained by the triaxial compression test. Parallel bond elastic modulus has a stronger impact on friction angle φ than that on cohesion c. Under the same normal stress conditions, the shear strength of the specimens increases with particle size. The shear strength of the specimen gradually decreases with the increase of the particle size ratio.

Statically indeterminate frame, composed of beams and columns, is a widely used structure form in civil engineering. The frame carrying capacity under various actions is related to the absolute stiffness of frame components and relative beam-column line stiffness ratio. The matrix displacement method and programming based on MATLAB were employed in this study to calculate the internal forces and displacements of a 2-bay 2-story frame structure under the action of horizontal loads. The influence of the beam-column line stiffness ratio on the frame load capacity was discussed based on the calculated result. Furthermore some advises were provided about the reasonable beam-column line stiffness ratio for engineering design.

Based on an idealized model of a homogeneous, isotropic beam-column, the second stiffest axis under static loading was derived. The maximum allowable force for the second stiffest axis was then examined. The ratio of the maximum allowable forces of the second stiffest axis to the stiffest axis was established. The stiffness ratio of the second stiffest axis to the stiffest axis was also found. Taking buckling into consideration, the safe load region for all possible acting directions was derived. The implications of the idealized model for cervical spine trauma are discussed.

Using the computer program SAFIR, the behaviors of restrained reinforced concrete (RC) beams with slab exposed to ISO834 standard fire are analyzed. The influences of three parameters (i.e., width of slab, axial restraint stiffness ratio, and rotational restraint stiffness ratio) on the beams’ behaviors in fire are investigated. Simulation results show that: (a) the axial force in the slab is much larger than that in the beam on the whole; (b) after 0.5 hour of heating the axial force in the slab decreases gradually with an increasing of the slab width ranging from 1.0 m to 2.5 m, but the influence of the slab width ranging from 1.0 m to 2.5 m on the axial force in the beam is limited; and (c) the effect of the rotational restraint stiffness ratio on the axial force in the beam/slab is very limited, but the beam’s peak hogging moment increases gradually with an increasing of the rotational restraint stiffness ratio.
