This paper covers work carried out by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) to investigate on mechanisms leading to cracking of piping as a result of thermal loading existing in flow mixing zones. The main purpose of this work is to analyse, with a new experiment and its numerical interpretation, and to understand the mechanism of propagation of cracks in such components. To address this issue, a new specimen has been developed on the basis of the Fat3D experiment. This thermal fatigue test consists in heating a 304L steel pre-cracked tube while cyclically injecting ambient water onto its inner surface. The tube is regularly removed from the furnace for a crack characterisation. Finally, the crack growth is evaluated from the crack length differences between two stops. In parallel, a finite element analysis is developed using the finite element Cast3M code. A pipe with a semi-elliptical crack on its inner surface is modelled. A cyclic thermal loading is imposed on the tube. This loading is in agreement with experimental data. The crack propagates through the thickness. A prediction of the velocity of the crack is finally assessed using a Paris’ law type criteria. Finally, this combined experimental and numerical work on 304L austenitic stainless steel pipes will enable to improve existing methods to accurately predict the crack growth under cyclic thermal loadings in austenitic stainless steel pipe at the design stage.

A method combines a back propagation neural networks (BPNN) with the data obtained using finite element method (FEM) is introduced in this paper as an approach to solve reverse problems. This paper presents the feasibility of this approach. FEM results are used to train the BPNN. Inputs of the network are associated with dimension deviation values of the steel pipe, and outputs correspond to its pass parameters. Training of the network ensures low error and good convergence of the learning process. At last, a group of optimal pass parameters are obtained, and reliability and accuracy of the parameters are verified by FEM simulation.

The present work deals with the development of a finite element methodology for obtaining the stress distributions in thick cylindrical HK40 stainless steel pipe that carries high-temperature fluids. The material properties and loading were assumed to be random variables. Thermal stresses that are generated along radial, axial, and tangential directions are generally computed using very complex analytical expressions. To circumvent such an issue, probability theory and mathematical statistics have been applied to many engineering problems, which allows determination of the safety both quantitatively and objectively based on the concepts of reliability. Monte Carlo simulation methodology is used to study the probabilistic characteristics of thermal stresses, and was implemented to estimate the probabilistic distributions of stresses against the variations arising due to material properties and load. A 2-D probabilistic finite element code was developed in MATLAB, and the deterministic solution was compared with ABAQUS solutions. The values of stresses obtained from the variation of elastic modulus were found to be low compared to the case where the load alone was varying. The probability of failure of the pipe structure was predicted against the variations in internal pressure and thermal gradient. These finite element framework developments are useful for the life estimation of piping structures in high-temperature applications and for the subsequent quantification of the uncertainties in loading and material properties.

In this article, a new type of reticulated joint, named the steel–concrete composite reticulated shell joint, is proposed. The proposed reticulated shell joint consists of an inner circular steel pipe, an outer circular steel pipe, a steel cover plate, and internal concrete. Five test specimens were tested under axial compression. The variable study included the wall thickness of the inner and outer circular steel pipes and the radius of the inner circular steel pipe. The test specimens exhibited a high bearing capacity and good plastic deformation ability under axial compression. The test results show that the wall thickness of the outer circular steel pipe and the radius of the inner circular steel pipe have a great influence on the bearing capacity of the steel–concrete composite reticulated shell joint, while the wall thickness of the inner circular steel pipe has little influence on the bearing capacity of the steel–concrete composite reticulated shell joint. Based on the test of the steel–concrete composite reticulated shell joints under axial load, the three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was used to analyze the mechanical properties of the steel–concrete composite reticulated shell joints under axial compression. The results of the finite element analysis showed good agreement with the experimental results. The formula for calculating the bearing capacity of the joint is derived. By comparing with the experimental results, the calculated results are basically consistent with the experimental results.

Due to the influence of rolling force fluctuations, tube size changes and material uniformity and other factors, vibration and other phenomenon inevitably occur in the rolling process of tandem rolling mill. This vibration has a great impact on the dynamic stability of the mill and rolling reduction, and will significantly reduce the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of seamless steel pipe. In this paper, the non-linear finite element software ABAQUS is used to simulate the rolling process of seamless steel pipe. First, rolling force of the first frame with the maximum rolling force of PQF rolling mill is calculated. The reliability of rolling force calculated by the finite element method is verified by the test experiment. The dynamic response analysis of the roll is carried out to obtain the dynamic response curve of the roll in the rolling state and to provide technical support for the rolling schedule with the calculated rolling force being the load.

Water hammer imposes a steep rise in pipe pressure due to the rapid closure of a valve or a pump shutdown. Transversal strain waves propagate along the pipe wall at sonic velocities, and dynamic stresses are developed in the material, which can interact with discontinuities and contribute to an unexpected failure. Pressure increase has been modeled as a simple step front in a finite element model of a short section of a steel pipe. Boundary conditions have been considered to closely resemble the conditions of longer pipe behavior. The shock traveling along the length of the fluid-filled pipe causes a vibration response in the pipe wall. Dynamic strains and stresses follow the water hammer event with a certain delay, as is shown from the results of the FEA. Response of the material is strain rate dependent and dynamic peak stresses are substantially larger than the expected from the static pressure loads. Damping of the waves, neither by the material of the pipe nor by the interaction fluid-pipe, has not been considered in this simple model. Hoop, axial, radial, and Von Mises equivalent stresses have been evaluated both for the overshooting and the following phase of decompression of a pipe without discontinuities. However, dynamic stresses can be enhanced in the presence of discontinuities such as laminations, thickness losses in the pipe wall due to corrosion, changes in the wall thickness in neighboring pipe sections, dents, etc. These dynamic effects are able to explain how certain discontinuities that were reported as passing an Engineering Critical Assessment can eventually cause failure to the integrity of the structure. Deflections in the pipe wall can be altered by the welded transition from a pipe with a certain thickness to another with a smaller thickness, and wavelength changes of one order of magnitude can be expected. This can result in different approaches towards the risk assessment for discontinuities in the proximity of changes in wall thickness.
