As technological advancements and lowered costs make self-driving cars available to more people, it becomes important to understand the dynamics of human-automation interactions for safety and efficacy. We used a dynamical approach to examine data from a previous study on simulated driving with an automated driving assistant. To maximize effect size in this preliminary study, we focused the current analysis on the two lowest and two highest-performing participants. Our visual comparisons were the utilization of the automated system and the impact of perturbations. Low-performing participants toggled and maintained reliance either on automation or themselves for longer periods of time. Decision making of high-performing participants was using the automation briefly and consistently throughout the driving task. Participants who displayed an early understanding of automation capabilities opted for tactical use. Further exploration of individual differences and automation usage styles will help to understand the optimal human-automation-team dynamic and increase safety and efficacy.

Abstract: The human race has always innovated, and in a relatively short time went from building fires and making stone-tipped arrows to creating smartphone apps and autonomous robots. Today, technological progress will undoubtedly continue to change the way we work, live, and survive in the coming decades. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the world has witnessed the emergence of social media, smartphones, self-driving cars, and autonomous flying vehicles. There have also been huge leaps in energy storage, artificial intelligence, and medical science. We are facing immense challenges in global warming and food security, among many other issues. While human innovation has contributed to many of the problems we are facing, it is also human innovation and ingenuity that can help humanity deal with these issues “New directions in science are launched by new tools much more often than by new concepts. The effect of a concept-driven revolution is to explain old things in new ways. The effect of a tool-driven revolution is to discover new things that have to be explained”. (F. Dyson, 1997 In this article, we review the impact of technology as evolving at beginning of 21st Century on future prospect of Energy demand either renewable or non-renewable form, Economy, to Ecommerce, Education and any other E-related of Modern Technology.

The article evaluates the impact of autonomous vehicles on road infrastructure de- sign, road traffic conditions and safety based on a review of existing literature. Levels of driv- ing automation and equipment of self-driving vehicles were presented. Attention was drawn to the benefits of developing communication systems between vehicle and the environment. The possible negative impact of autonomous vehicles on mixed traffic capacity was noted. The potential needs to adapt the road infrastructure to the traffic flow of automated vehicles were also presented. Separation of the lane, dedicated to self-driving vehicles, with a high share of these vehicles was presented as an element that improves the flow of traffic and safe- ty. Roundabouts can better facilitate U-turns and provide better safety, especially in reducing severe crashes, than can traditional intersections. Roundabouts, instead of traditional signalized intersections, increasingly are being installed on busy arterial streets. Even though roundabouts gradually are becoming integral to regional transportation networks, no literature addresses the safety impacts of access management features such as driveways and median openings along corridors with roundabouts. The existing access management guidelines for signalized intersections are not directly applicable to roundabouts because traffic operations are different at the two types of intersections. In this study the safety impact of access features near roundabouts was investigated. In particular, three potential safety concerns associated with roundabouts were studied in commercial areas in Florida: (a) the impact of driveway corner clearances on roundabout safety, (b) the safety impact of median openings near roundabouts, and (c) the safety at roundabouts that provided direct access to activity centers. Data for the analysis reflected 131 roundabouts in commercial areas in Florida. Police reports for more than 1,000 crashes that occurred in roundabout influence areas between 2007 and 2011 were reviewed carefully to identify crash patterns and causes related to specific roundabout designs, con-figurations, and access features. Recommendations are made for access features near roundabouts in commercial areas.

Transportation is a sector of activity in permanent change. From airplanes to cars, trains and boats all forms of transportation aim at meeting personal or business needs of displacement of persons and goods. Those needs include safety, reliability, on time with the best effectiveness, and finally, providing the best price. This paper aims at studying car transportation’s consequences regarding last developments that culminate in the self-driving cars. This study analyses the impact of such changes at social and industrial level, considering also the coexistence of traditional cars and self-driving cars in diverse aspects. The authors aim to establish a proficient debate on such important changes for the near future, to create awareness of the potential consequences of such societal and business revolution and generate some conclusions addressing these complex challenges for the years to come. This paper also issues some recommendations for the coexistence of self-driving, autonomous and traditional cars during the transitory period.
