The effects of magnesium deficiency on the quality and magnesium content of flue-cured tobacco leaf

In an outdoor trial with tobacco in sand culture, two levels of magnesium were supplied initially in the nutrient solution. The effects on quality and magnesium concentration in the cured leaf when magnesium was withheld from the nutrient were studied. When the magnesium supply was inadequate the reduction in magnesium concentration in leaves was largely accounted for by the diluting effect of increase in dry weight, and was accentuated under conditions of extreme deficiency by transference of magnesium from older leaves to actively expanding tissues nearer the apex. The effects of deficiency on quality depended partly on the amount of magnesium the plant had absorbed before the cessation of magnesium supply. To avoid loss of quality, magnesium in the nutrient solution had to be maintained at 20 % at least of the total cations (equivalent basis) until plants had been 'topped' (i.e. inflorescence removed) and the total leaf area of the plant had reached c. two-thirds of its final size.

Growth and yield responses of `New Mexico 6-4' and `NuMex R Naky' chile pepper [Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum (Longum Group)] to four Fe levels were studied under sand culture. A balanced nutrient solution (total nutrient concentration <2 mmol·L-1) was recirculated continuously to plants potted in acid-washed sand from the seedling stage to red fruit harvest. Plants received 1, 3, 10 or 30 μm Fe as ferric ethylenediamine di-(o-hydroxyphenyl-acetate). Plant growth was determined by leaf area, specific leaf area [(SLA), leaf area per unit dry weight of leaves], instantaneous leaf photosynthetic rates, and dry matter partitioning. Low Fe (1 or 3 μm Fe) in the nutrient solution was associated with lower relative growth rates (RGR), increased SLA, and higher root to shoot ratios (3 μm Fe plants only) at final harvest. High Fe levels (10 or 30 μm Fe) in the nutrient solution were associated with an increased yield of red fruit and total plant dry matter. RGR of low-Fe young chile plants was reduced before any chlorotic symptoms appeared.

Geraniums in 15-cm pots were irrigated automatically for 8 weeks with a Controlled Water Table (CWT) irrigation system. Plants were irrigated with a nutrient solution supplied by a capillary mat with one end of the mat suspended in a trough below the bottom of the pot. The nutrient solution remained at a constant level in the trough. Nutrient solution removed from the trough was immediately replaced from a larger reservoir. The vertical distance from the surface of the nutrient solution and the bottom of the pot determined the water/air ratio and water potential in the growing media. Treatments consisted of placing pots at 0, 2, 4, and 6 cm above the nutrient solution. Control plants were irrigated as needed with a trickle irrigation system. Geraniums grown at 0,2 and 4 CWT were ≈25% larger than the control plants and those grown at 6 CWT as measured by dry weight and leaf area. Roots of plants grown at 0 CWT were concentrated in the central area of the root ball; whereas roots of plants in other treatments were located more near the bottom of the pot. Advantages of the CWT system include: Plant controlled automatic irrigation; no run off; optimum water/air ratio.

Changes in the pre-emergence distribution of dry matter in subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) variety Bacchus Marsh were followed at 21°C, using three sizes of seed and three depths of sowing, ½, 1¼, and 2 in. Decreasing seed size and increasing depth of sowing both reduce the weight of the cotyledons a t emergence. Seed of the three sizes were sown a t three depths in pot culture a t staggered intervals so that emergence was simultaneous. Dry weight in the early vegetative stage was proportional to seed size, and total leaf area and leaf numbers showed similar trends. Plants of each seed size grew at the same relative rate. No effect of depth of sowing could be detected, and this was shown to be due to the cotyledon area a t emergence being constant for any given seed size, regardless of varying depth of sowing and hence of cotyledon weight. It was concluded that seed size in a plant having epigeal germination and without endosperm is of importance: firstly, in limiting the maximum hypocotyl elongation and hence depth of sowing, and secondly, in determining cotyledon area. Cotyledon area in turn influences seedling growth, which is not affected by cotyledon weight. Once emergence has taken place, cotyledonary reserves are of no further significance in the growth of the plants.

Introduction. Study of the interrelation between magnesium content in biosphere objects (soil, natural water, plants) with arterial hypertension (AH) incidence among the population living in the territory of the plain Dagestan (Babayurtovsky, Kizlyar, Tarumovsky and Nogai districts of the Republic). material and Methods. To assess the development of hypertension, the data were obtained from the medical information center of the Ministry of Health of Dagestan. Samples of soil, water, plants with the determination of the magnesium content in them were processed by the photometric method in the biogeochemical laboratory of the Prikaspiyskiy Institute of Biology Resources of Daghestan Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For analyzes, the material was selected in the summer months. The correlation coefficients are calculated by Pearson. Results. When comparing the incidence rates of AH for 2005-2007 with the magnesium content in soils, natural waters, plants, a negative average correlation of magnesium concentration in the study sites with the incidence of AH population was established in the study area. A number of patients in the studied years was also noted to be changing, but the dependence of the incidence of AH of the population on the magnesium content in the biosphere objects is preserved. Conclusions. One of the factors of occurrence and course of hypertension is the magnesium status of the population, which depends on the geochemical features of the territory. As a result of the study, it was found that the higher the magnesium content in biosphere objects, the lower the incidence of AH population. In order to reduce the AH values among the population, it is necessary to correct the lack of magnesium in the human body with magnesium additives, which contribute to the regulation of blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In connection with the possible subclinical magnesium deficiency, an important factor in informing about the possible morbidity of hypertension is information on the magnesium content in environmental objects.

This study was conducted in experimental fields, Department of Horticulture, University of Bagdad, in Abu-Graib  during season 2011-2012 for jerusalum artichoke. This study was included the effect of dipping tubers in three concentrations of GA3(2.5,5,10g/l) (G1,G2,G3),as well as to control treatment (G0), and spraying nutrient solution Agro leaf A1 (8g/l), as well as to control treatment (A0). This study was made by using Factorial experiment (4*2) within the design RCBD with three replicates. Results could be summarized as follows: G3A0 increased field emergence (12.00 day), G2A0 increased percentage of germination (99.33%) and G2A1 increased number of branches (4.60 stem.plant-1) but the treatment G1A1gave highest rate for number of leaves, leaf area, guide of leaf area, dry weight of the vegetative parts and dry weight of 100gm tubers as(4495.10 leaf.plant-1, 2246.20 dsm2, 99.84, 922.40g, 24.00g.) respectively. The treatments gave significant differences quantity yield, so treatment G3A0 gave highest weight of the tubers as(45.55g.) but the treatment G3A1 gave highest number of the tubers as(68.00 tuber.plant-1 ) and highest yield of plant as (2890g/plant).

Maize (Zea mays L. cv. XL45) plants were grown from seed in controlled-environment rooms. Twice-daily weighings of the plants and containers for 7 days reduced height, and removing plants from the rooms for two 20-min periods daily for 7 days gave significant reductions in stem and leaf dry weights and total leaf area. Transpiration rates were not affected by either of these treatments. Short-term removal from the rooms (up to 10 min daily) produced no significant reductions in plant characteristics. Measuring leaf lengths daily for 10 days resulted in significant reductions in stem dry weight and plant height. It is suggested that control plants should always be subjected to the same degree of handling as treated plants.

SUMMARY The effect of thyroid activity on the distribution of magnesium, potassium and calcium between plasma, soft tissues and bone was investigated in adolescent rats. Administration of thyroxine or propylthiouracil produced variable effects on their concentrations in tissues, but the total amounts of all three metals in the complete liver and a single femur showed consistent changes that were similar to changes in the nitrogen content of the liver and the dry weight of bone. It is concluded that the influence of thyroid hormone on mineral metabolism is secondary to its action on tissue anabolism and catabolism. Magnesium deficiency decreased thyroid activity, and loading with magnesium salts increased the activity of the gland, a very close relationship being observed between the plasma magnesium concentration and the activity of the thyroid. Deficiency or loading with potassium salts produced changes that were qualitatively similar to those with magnesium, but less well-defined, and it appears that potassium may have an indirect effect on the gland. A hypothesis is advanced to explain how, in the absence of a homeostatic relationship, the availability of magnesium could modulate thyroid activity.

An evaluation of establishment techniques and rootstocks for ‘Chambourcin’ hybrid grape (Vitis sp.) was conducted 2009–12. Our objective was to evaluate four establishment methods and their interactions with grafted and ungrafted vines in terms of vine morphology and early fruit production under southwest Missouri conditions. The study was established in May 2009, as a factorial experiment comparing four establishment methods (open-trained without protection—two shoots, grow tube protected—two shoots, paperboard carton protected—two shoots, and fan-trained without protection—six shoots) across two vine types (own-rooted and grafted to ‘Couderc 3309’ hybrid grape rootstock). All vines in four of 12 field replications were destructively harvested near the conclusion of the first growing season, with leaf area and total vine dry matter determined. In years 3 and 4, yield, fruit composition, and vegetative growth were determined from the eight remaining replications. The fan training method increased leaf area and total vine dry matter compared with the other methods, but none of the establishment techniques affected fruit yield. Trunks that were tube protected had longer internodes, smaller diameter, and less dry matter, whereas both protection devices reduced glyphosate injury. Vine type (grafted and ungrafted) did not impact total leaf area or dry weight during the establishment year, but grafted vines had increased trunk and root shank dry weights compared with own-rooted vines. Grafted vines produced greater fruit yield in 2012. The fan training method required more labor to execute; although it was successful at increasing leaf area and root dry weight, it increased susceptibility to glyphosate injury and did not promote increased precocity or early fruit yield.

Seeds of tomato `Big Beef Hybrid' and impatiens `Sun and Shade White' were sown in 200-cell plug trays and put under cyclic mist to germinate. After 3 weeks, the most uniform seedlings were transplanted to 24-cell flat inserts where they remained for the duration of the experiment. At 5 weeks, plants were arranged for the study with three flats per treatment. The mechanical group was brushed 50 times at 7:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. The brushing mechanism was adjusted as needed to account for growth and stimulate only the top 1 to 2 inches of the plants. Water was withheld from the drought plants until water stress symptoms developed. Treatments continued for three weeks. At the termination of treatment, data was only recorded on the eight plants in the middle of each flat to reduce edge effects. Data collected included height, total stem length, total leaf area, and fresh and dry weight of both roots and shoots. Two more replications of the experiment were performed over the next 3 months. As expected, the treated plants were shorter than the controls and had a more compact and sturdy growth habit in all replications. Effects on leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight were noted and will be discussed.

`Seyval blanc' and `Vidal blanc' grapevines (Vitis sp.) grown in large containers were root-pruned at different severities and/or stages of development and the effects on growth of both cultivars and fruiting of `Seyval blanc' were determined. As the severity of root pruning increased, stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration (E) decreased and the number of wilted leaves increased in both cultivars. In both cultivars, root pruning reduced net photosynthesis (Pn) and E for as long as 18 to 20 days, as well as total leaf area and dry weight of leaves and petioles plus tendrils. The reductions were proportional to the degree of root pruning. A similar pattern existed for cane and root tissue of `Vidal blanc'. As the severity of root pruning increased, berry and cluster weight, and titratable acidity (TA) of `Seyval blanc' decreased. There was no effect of root pruning on berries per cluster, soluble solids content (SSC), or pH of the juice. No interaction was significant for any factor between time of root pruning and fruiting measured on `Seyval blanc' vines. Root pruning at bloom reduced leaf area, number of leaves, and dry weight of petioles, trunks, and canes. Root pruning at veraison had no effect on any vegetative or fruit parameters. Fruiting `Seyval blanc' vines had less leaf area and smaller petiole and cane dry weights than did nonfruiting vines.
