Responses to feeding canola meal or lupin seed to pregnant, lactating, and dry ewes

Responses in wool production, ewe liveweight, lamb birth weight, and growth were compared when the major source of protein in the diet was either lupin seed or canola meal. The diets were fed to ewes during the final 3 weeks of pregnancy and first 3 weeks of lactation, and for a similar period of time to a group of dry ewes. All ewes were fed to maintain conceptus-free liveweight. The diet containing canola meal increased (P < 0.001) wool growth in the reproducing ewes (50-63%) and the dry ewes (12.5-20%) during, and for 3 weeks after, the treatment period. Fibre diameter of wool grown during the treatment period was increased (P < 0.025) by 0.5-1.5 pm in the ewes fed canola meal compared with ewes fed lupins. The ewes fed canola meal gained slightly (P = 0.06) more weight during the experiment than the ewes fed lupins. Lambs from the ewes fed canola meal were lighter (P < 0.05) at birth (480 g) than lambs from ewes fed lupins. The reproducing ewes had lower fleece weights, average fibre diameters, and staple strengths and lengths than the dry ewes. These fleece characteristics were not significantly affected by diet. Canola meal is partially protected from rumen degradation and is less expensive than other sources of similar proteins and may therefore provide a practical option for commercial sheep producers.

Maiden (1.5 years old, 42 kg) and adult (4-5 years old, 55-58 kg) Merino ewes were divided into 15 groups of 30 on the basis of ovulation rate (three classes of ewe: maiden = 1, adult = 1 or 2) and fed lupin seed (91% digestible, 33% crude protein) three times per week at rates equivalent to 0, 100, 200, 300, or 400 g head-1 day-1 from day 28 to day 108 of pregnancy (17 December to 6 March). Thereafter the ewes were fed at the same rate (400-500 g head-1 day-1 of lupins, ad libitum oaten hay) until two weeks post lambing. They were grazed on two hectare plots from day 22 of pregnancy until two weeks after lambing; the plots had 1.3 tomes dry matter/ha (54% digestible, 11% crude protein) at the start of grazing. The differential feeding induced changes in liveweight and condition score during mid-pregnancy ranging across the ewe classifications from 8.4 to +5.0 kg and -1.6 to +1.3 units, respectively. In late pregnancy and lactation there were compensatory changes in the ewes, so that at 12 weeks post-lambing the difference between the animals from the mid-pregnancy feeding treatments had been reduced to less than 2 kg. There was a significant relationship (linear P < 0.001) between lamb birth weight and rate of lupin feeding during mid-pregnancy. For every 0.1 kg head-' day-' of lupins fed, lamb birth weight increased by 0.11 kg. There was no significant effect of class of ewe on this relationship. Maternal plasma glucose levels at about day 100 of pregnancy increased with rate of lupin feeding (interaction between class of ewe and feeding treatment P < 0.01). Ultrasound measurements of cotyledon diameters were greater (P < 0.001), and resistance to maternal placental blood flow less (assessed by Doppler arterial waveform analysis, interaction between class of ewe and feeding treatment P < 0.05) at about day 100 of pregnancy in ewes fed 400 g head-1 day-1 of lupins compared with unfed ewes. These findings indicated that in the unfed ewes there was a reduced nutrient supply to the fetus from reduced glucose availability, smaller placentas and less expansion of the placental vasculature. Growth of the lambs to four weeks of age increased with rate of lupin feeding in mid-pregnancy (quadratic P < 0.05), although the actual differences in weight at four weeks of age were small (<1 kg). Annual wool production from the ewes was significantly affected by the differential feeding during mid-pregnancy, with clean fleece weight (linear P < 0.01), staple length (linear P < 0.01) and strength (linear P < 0.001) increasing with increased rate of lupin feeding, and the position of break shifted from the period of pregnancy to after lambing (quadratic P < 0.01). Mean fibre diameter was not significantly affected by any treatment. It was concluded that the ewes at greatest risk from underfeeding in mid-pregnancy, in terms of lamb and wool production, were maiden ewes and adult ewes bearing twins.

The effects of initial liveweight, liveweight change, and composition of the diet on wool growth and staple strength in weaner sheep were investigated. Weaner wethers (64) were allocated to treatments in a factorial design (23). The factors were initial liveweight (heavy, 33 kg; light, 25 kg), liveweight change (fed at maintenance for 56 days, or 28 days at 0 ·6×maintenance then 28 days at 1·6×maintenance), and diet (lupin seed based diet or canola meal based diet). The heavier weaners grew approximately 1·9 g/day more wool than the light sheep during the experimental period and this resulted in a higher clean fleece weight (1·8 v. 1·4 kg), staple strength (37 v. 27·4 N/ktex), and fibre diameter (18·0 v. 17·4 µm). Substituting canola meal for lupin seed increased wool growth during the experiment and clean wool yield, but did not affect clean fleece weight or staple strength. The weaners fed to lose and then gain weight grew wool with a lower staple strength than the weaners fed to maintain weight through the experiment (28·6 v. 35·8 N/ktex), but there were no differences in any of the other fleece characteristics. The ratio of wool growth to dry matter intake (DMI) was higher in the sheep fed canola meal than those fed lupins (by approximately 1·5 g/kg DMI) and higher in weaners losing weight than those fed to maintain weight (by approximately 4·5 g/kg DMI). From a practical perspective, these results indicate that initial liveweight and liveweight change both influence staple strength and wool growth and need to be included in any management strategy to improve wool quality of young sheep.

Wool-free liveweight change (LWC), wool growth rate, annual wool production, and wool characteristics of young Merino wethers fed supplements of lupins with gypsum or a multi-element mineral lick were examined in 12 experiments at 5 farms between 1989 and 1992. The source of sheep varied between experiments; age was 4.5-6.5 months and liveweight 28-37 kg at the beginning of supplementation. Sheep were fed lupins, lupins coated with gypsum (15-20 g/kg lupins), or lupins along with access to the mineral lick (offered at 140 g/sheep.week). The amount of lupins offered in all treatments within any experiment was the same. Supplementary feeding varied between experiments from 150 to 240 days. The sheep grazed annual pastures at stocking rates of 8-1 6.7ha. Average lick intake was 12-18 g/sheep. day. During supplementary feeding, there was considerable variation in LWC (-80 to +110 g/day) and clean wool growth rates (3.8-15.1 g/day) within and between experiments. However, there was no significant positive effect of gypsum or mineral lick supplementation on LWC or clean wool growth rates during or after supplementary feeding in any experiment. There were positive (P<0.01) relationships between LWC and clean wool growth rates during supplementation. Also, for some spring-shorn sheep types, staple strength of wool was linearly related (P<0.01) to LWC in the period before the position of break in the wool staple. Annual wool production, average fibre diameter, and staple strength of midside wool were not significantly increased by supplements of gypsum or mineral lick in any experiment.

The wool production at the midside of 15 non-mated Merino ewes was compared with that of their monoctocous (n = 20) and dioctocous (n = 13) flockmates during the second half of pregnancy. The ewes were compared under experimentally controlled feeding conditions designed to maintain the liveweight of each ewe, exclusive of the weights of fleece and conceptus, by progressively increasing the quantities of a sorghum grain and lucerne chaff diet (1:1 by weight) offered to the pregnant ewes. During the latter half of pregnancy, each non-mated ewe consumed 42.1 kg of the diet. The single- and twinbearing ewes consumed 27 and 44% more of the diet than did the non-mated ewes. The adjusted liveweight of the non-pregnant ewes increased by 0.03 kg/week, while those of the monoctocous and dioctocous ewes changed by 0.11 and -0.05 kg/week (s.e.= � 0.04). These changes in liveweight were small but differed between the ewe classes (P<0.05). The rate of wool production per unit area of skin at the midside was 411 �g/cm2.day, with no significant differences between the ewe classes, and with no interactions between ewe classes and period of measurement. The wool produced on the midside had an average fibre diameter of 19.0 �m, again with no significant differences between ewe classes or periods. The length of fibre grown during the latter half of pregnancy was 26.1 mm, with no difference between the ewe classes. We conclude that a loss of wool production is not an obligate consequence of pregnancy, but can be prevented by nutritional management that recognises the additional requirements of the pregnant ewe for nutrients.

A study was made during a three year period (1 968-1 970) of wool production by a flock of 540 ewes grazing annual pasture at Werribee, Victoria. The ewes were stocked at three rates (5, 7 1/2 and 10 ewes ha-1) and lambed between July 6 and August 20 or between September 10 and October 29 each year. Fibre diameter and length of wool samples were measured in 1968, 1969 and 1970 ; in 1970 growth of greasy wool was calculated from staples of dye-banded wool. Wool growth was reduced in all ewes during late pregnancy and early lactation but was not affected during late lactation in ewes lambing in September. The proportion of tender fleeces from all ewes was greater in 1970 and the weight of fleeces from only those ewes bearing single lambs was less in all years for ewes lambing in July than for ewes lambing in September. More ewes were barren and fewer ewes had twins in July and consequently the mean fleece weights of all ewes from both groups were similar. Fleeces from ewes stocked at 10 ha-1 were lighter, shorter and finer than fleeces from ewes stocked at 5 and 7 1/2 ha-1, but the proportion of tender fleeces did not differ between the groups. Wool production of ewes stocked at 5 and 7 1/2 ha-1 increased from 1968 to 1970, whereas that of ewes at 10 ha-1 did not. This was associated with differences in pasture availability and composition. At 10 ewes ha-1 less pasture was present in winter and spring in 1970 than in 1968, whereas at the other stocking rates it was greater. In 1970 the density of weeds in autumn was greater and in spring more silver grass (Vulpia spp.) and less brome grass (Bromus spp.) was available at the high stocking rate.

This paper reports the production losses resulting from treating sheep with sublethal doses of corynetoxins, the causal agent of annual ryegrass toxicity. Merino ewes were given 3 levels of corynetoxins twice weekly for 11 weeks from 26 days before the start of joining to day 51 of pregnancy, giving a cumulative dose of 0 , 0.4 or 0.8 mg/kg liveweight. The effect on ovulation, pregnancy, lamb birth weight, lamb survival and weaning weight were measured along with the liveweight and wool growth of the ewes. Corynetoxin treatment depressed (P<0.005) the activity of uridine diphospho-N-acetylglucosamine: dolichol-phosphate N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphate transferase and liver damage was detected in ewes on the high toxin treatment (P<0.05). Ewe liveweight was unaffected by treatment but wool growth and wool fibre diameter were reduced by 10 and 7%, respectively (P<0.05). Corynetoxin treatment appeared to increase ovulation (P<0.05) and, as there was no effect on conception and embryo survival, this resulted in a 30-35% increase in the number of lambs weaned. Lamb birth weight and survival were not affected by treatment but weaning weight of the low toxin group was depressed (P<0.05). While reproduction was not adversely affected, the sheep in this trial were exposed to extremely low levels of corynetoxins which did not accumulate to levels capable of causing detectable liver damage until 23 days after joining. Even at these levels of intake, well below those required to show clinical signs (3-5 mg/kg liveweight), wool growth was reduced, suggesting that sheep grazed on mildly toxic pasture experience wool production losses in the absence of signs of the clinical disease.

In experiment 1, 6 groups, each of 10 superfine Merino wethers, were individually penned indoors and hand-fed oats, wheat straw and whole lupins, either alone or with 2 g/day of DL-methionine or 6.6 g/day of fatty acid coated methionine (Ketionin) for 23 weeks. Following shearing the 6 groups were hand-fed lucerne-chopped hay in experiment 2 either alone or with hydroxymethyl-methionine (Mepron) or Ketionin for 23 weeks. In both experiments the rations were fed at maintenance level and were offered 3 times a week. Half of the sheep had no rumen ciliate protozoa following treatment in a previous trial. In experiment 1, defaunated sheep produced an additional 6.5%clean wool on the supplemented oats plus lupins rations. Inclusion of Ketionin in the ration of defaunated sheep resulted in an 11% increase in clean wool growth, without affecting wool quality. In experiment 2 defaunated sheep produced an additional 6% clean wool on the lucerne-chopped hay ration. No responses to defaunation occurred on the supplemented rations. Inclusion of both forms of protected methionine in the ration (providing 2 g methionine/sheep.day) resulted in 23% and 13% higher clean wool production in the faunated and defaunated sheep respectively. Fibre diameter of wool was increased by 0.7 pm in sheep receiving Mepron and 0-5 pm in sheep receiving Ketionin. The wool grown by suppiemented sheep remained suitable for the 'Sharlea' trade (< 17.5 �m). It is concluded that wool growth responds more to defaunation on high energy-low protein diets. Wool growth responses to supplementation with protected methionine were greater on 100% roughage diets than on high grain diets. Further study is needed before an optimal ration for superfine wool production is formulated.

The feed additive flavomycin, a glycolipid antibiotic, was evaluated for its potential to improve wool growth in sheep fed two pelleted diets: one based on lucerne chaff and lupin grain and the other on wheat chaff and fishmeal. Seventy-eight weaner ewes, approximately 20 months of age and mean weight of 32 kg (s.e. � 0.3), were placed in individual pens and fed the pelleted diets at a level equivalent to 3.5% of the mean liveweight of the group. The experiment consisted of an initial period (8 weeks) during which all animals received their respective diets with no flavomycin, followed by an experimental period (9 weeks) during which the animals received their diets with flavomycin. Flavomycin was included at three different rates (l0, 20 and 40 ppm) in both diets (nine sheep/level) during the experimental period and twelve sheep were fed each of the unmedicated diets (no flavomycin). Feed intakes were measured daily and animals weighed weekly. Wool growth was measured for the initial and experimental periods by clipping a mid-side patch of about 100 cm2. In sheep fed the lucernellupin based diet, flavomycin increased liveweight gain ( P < 0.05) at 20 ppm but had no effect on wool production, whereas in those fed the hay/fishmeal diet, there was a linear decrease in liveweight gain (P < 0.001) (161, 151, 142, 130 g day-1) and a dose related increase in clean wool production (P<0.01) (12.9, 14.5, 15.2, 15.3 g m-2 day-1) with increasing rates of flavomycin (0, 10, 20, 40 ppm respectively). There was no significant effect of flavomycin on fibre diameter in the sheep fed either diet. The inclusion of flavomycin in both diets significantly increased the molar proportions of propionate in the rumen fluid and in sheep on the hay/fishmeal pellet it reduced the concentration of rumen ammonia. The time animals took to eat their ration was increased with the inclusion of flavomycin in the hay/fishmeal diet.

An experiment was conducted to determine whether thyroxine injections would control the increases in fibre diameter when the wool growth of Merino wethers is stimulated by an increased supply of feed. Fifty-seven sheep were allocated to 1 of 5 levels of daily intake, ranging from 0.75 maintenance to ad libitum, and injected every third day with 3 mg of L-thyroxine or a saline solution (control). Sheep treated with thyroxine had elevated plasma tri-iodothyronine (T3) levels, which were highest in sheep fed the least (P<0.01). Ad libitum intakes of sheep treated with thyroxine tended to be higher than that of control sheep, particularly in the fifth to seventh weeks of the experiment, and liveweight gain over the initial 4 weeks was significantly (P<0.001) less. Wool growth was increased by thyroxine treatment, although the difference was small in the second half of the experiment at the highest intake levels. Fibre diameter of sheep treated with thyroxine was greater at low intakes, although the difference diminished as intake increased. Fibre length in the second half of the experiment was positively related to intake, but there were no effects of thyroxine. Although the relationships of fibre diameter and length with wool growth did not differ between the treatment groups, length accounted for more of the variation in wool growth in the second half of the experiment in treated wethers than in control wethers (0.376 v. 0.182 of the variation, respectively). Thyroxine did not appreciably reduce the extent of the increase in fibre diameter associated with an increase in the availability and intake of feed.

SUMMARYGreasy fleece weight (12 months growth) and wool samples from hip and shoulder regions were taken on 15 Dorset, 20 Leicester, 20 Suffolk and 17 DLS ewes (a cross of ½ Dorset, ¼ Leicester, ¼ Suffolk obtained by mating DL rams to DS ewes and DS rams to DL ewes). The purpose of the study was to compare wool production and characteristics of the first generation of DLS with that of the three breeds of origin. Wool production of DLS was 3·58 kg, 8·8 and 14% higher than that of Suffolk and Dorset, but 11% lower than that of Leicester (P< 0·01). The percentage of clean wool was highest in Leicester (78·3%), followed by DLS, Dorset and Suffolk (76·1, 74·3 and 70·5%, respectively). The average fibre diameter of the DLS and Leicester was 38 /m, 4 /m thicker than that for Suffolk and Dorset (P < 0·01). Average fibre length was 15 cm in DLS and Dorset, 6 cm shorter than in Leicester, and 3 cm longer than in Suffolk (P < 0·01). The variability in fibre diameter and length was highest in Leicester, followed closely by DLS.
