The reproductive performances of groups of 4-6-year-old medium wool Merino ewes that were vaccinated with Fecundin and/or fed sweet lupin grain prior to and during the early part of the joining period were compared with untreated ewes over 2 years. The rams were joined with the ewes in early January of each year. In both years the Fecundin and lupin treatments increased ovulation rates (between 0.13 and 0.56) and the incidence of multiple pregnancies (between 1 and 36%). The proportions of lambs born following treatment with Fecundin were larger than those from the ewes fed only lupins. When the treatments were combined, there were no increases in lambs born above that of Fecundin alone. Pregnancy significantly depressed wool production from individual ewes, while those with more than 1 lamb produced less wool than those with only 1 lamb. However, the average quantity (4.6 kg greasy) and quality of wool produced by the ewes each year was similar for all groups, indicating that the variation in the incidence of multiple pregnancies had not affected flock wool production. The average rate of growth of the progeny from marking to weaning was also similar for each group (191 and 238 g/head.day for years 1 and 2, respectively) even though there were more multiple-born lambs in the Fecundin-treated groups. On a flock basis, it would appear that the nutritional conditions experienced during this study were adequate to avoid significant penalties associated with multiple pregnancies.

In 1970 and 1971, the performance of ewes grazing oats at various stocking intensities during the final stages of pregnancy was compared with that of ewes, at stocking intensities considered optimal, on subterranean clover-annual grass pasture. Grazing oats produced no more winter feed than pasture in 1970, though quality of the oat herbage was better. In 1971, oats produced more, and better quality, herbage than pasture. Much greater ewe weight gains per head and per hectare were obtained on oats than on pasture in both years. In 1971, for example, ewes rotationally grazed on oats at 37 ha-1 gained 8 times more per head, and 23 times more per hectare, than ewes at 12 ha-1 on pasture. However, gains in reproductive performance and wool production were small or negligible.

Four experiments were conducted at different locations in Western Australia to evaluate the effectiveness of immunizing young (maiden, 1 liz year old) and adult Merino ewes with Fecundin to improve their reproductive performances. The ovulation rates of immunized maiden ewes was increased (006-030) above that of untreated ewes in both experiments 1 and 2. However, there were no significant improvements in the marking percentages for the immunized ewes with the differences between the untreated and immunized ewes ranging from -164 to 58070. In comparison with untreated ewes immunization 6 and 2 weeks before the start of joining depressed ewe fertility by 261 % whereas immunization 8 and 4 weeks before the start of joining did not significantly affect fertility. The availability of oat grain ad libitum prior to parturition and during early lactation did not improve the survival of lambs born to immunized ewes. In experiments 3 and 4 immunization of adult Merino ewes increased their ovulation rates (0,41-063) above untreated controls and tended to increase the proportion of pregnant ewes which had multiple pregnancies (from -23 to 342%). The responses at the end of lambing were variable (from -198 to 375% lambs marked) with high lamb mortalities occurring in some experiments. There was no adverse effect on the reproductive performances following consecutive annual immunizations over 3 years and the absence of treatment for 1 year did not prevent a response in the following year.

Estimates are given of the change in the level of production of 10 fleece characteristics of four Merino, one Polwarth, and three Corriedale flocks, in Victoria associated with variation in property, breed, season, property x season, age, and reproductive status. There was a decrease with age of characteristics associated with wool weight, and a decline in general wool quality. The decline was approximately linear for most characteristics from ewes of 3 years of age. Lactation was generally more severe than pregnancy in reducing wool production. The estimates of the effect of age on wool characteristics are used to assess the likely quantity and quality of wool produced by flocks of different age structures. These estimates may be used in conjunction with reproductive performance data to plan for maximum wool production.

The economic growth, which is underway in Russia, raises new questions to be addressed. How to improve the quality of growth, increasing the role of new competitive sectors and transforming them into the driving force of growth? How can progressive structural changes be implemented without hampering the rate of growth in general? What are the main external and internal risks, which may undermine positive trends of development? The author looks upon financial, monetary and foreign exchange aspects of the problem and comes up with some suggestions on how to make growth more competitive and sustainable.

Citizens often attempt to interact with government through online modes of communication such as email and social media. Using an audit study, we examine when and how American municipalities with populations of over 50,000 respond to online requests for information. We develop baselines for municipal responsiveness, including the average rate, time, and quality of responses, and examine whether these response attributes vary based on the mode of communication or the tone of the request. Overall, municipalities responded to 54% of email requests and 38% of Twitter requests. A majority of responses were received on the same business day. Responses are slightly faster on Twitter, but of higher quality on email. Governments are more likely to respond to frustrated constituents on email, but respond faster to frustrated queries on Twitter, though with lower quality responses. These findings contribute to our understanding of local government responsiveness and have significant implications for democratic accountability and resident compliance with and the effectiveness of local government policies. Furthermore, our scholarly understanding of local government communications with residents, and particularly the promise of social media as a tool of two-way communication, may be underdeveloped.

ABSTRACT Dystocia in reptiles is the retention of ova or foetuses within the female due to the failure of the female to complete parturition or oviposition. This disorder is commonly observed in captive reptiles, but has rarely been reported in wild reptiles. We observed a large internal obstruction in an adult female Tiger Snake captured as part of an ongoing population study. We failed to palpate out the object in the field, so we took the snake to a veterinary practice for professional assistance. All non-lethal methods of extracting the object were unsuccessful so we euthanised the specimen and post-mortem dissection revealed five mummified stillborn young lodged in a sealed reproductive tract. Reproductive abnormalities are frequent in Tiger Snakes and large proportions of litters can be comprised of unfertilised eggs, fertilised aborted eggs and stillborn young, yet none of these observations ever resulted in dystocia. It is interesting that this observation occurred in a snake from Herdsman Lake, Western Australia, where the Tiger Snake population is subjected to many anthropogenic stressors. We cannot determine what caused this case of dystocia but suspect it may have been caused by some sort of negative effect onset by the quality of the environment.

The once bred gilt system of production has a number of benefits in terms of feed efficiency and welfare, however the system relies on the production of a quality carcass and acceptable reproductive performance. Previous studies have indicated that welfare might be improved if gilts were ad-libitum fed a diet containing 60% Sugar beet pulp (Stewart et al 1993). There was a suggestion however that reproductive physiology may be put at risk using such a diet. The objective of this experiment was to identify differences in reproductive performance using two different energy sources in gestation and to manipulate nutrition during lactation to study the effect on carcass quality.
