Haplosclerida and Petrosida (Poifera : Demospongiae) from the New Caledonia lagoon

Sixteen species of Haplosclerida and Petrosida are described from the reefs and lagoon of New Caledonia. Five species are new and two species are reported for the first time from New Caledonia. Nine previously described species were also found in this study and extra characters are reported, or additional locality and habitat records provided. The new species belong to the Haplosclerida : Chalinidae, three species; Niphatidae, one species; and Callyspongiidae, one species. New records of Xestospongia bergquistia and X. exigua (Petrosida : Petrosidae) are reported. Some of the species described have reduced spiculation; this reduction in amount of silica in the skeleton, and increased fibre development, may be related to water temperature. The proportion of endemic species within the Haplosclerida and Petrosida shallow water fauna is 48% and 75% in deep water. Non-endemic species have closest affinities to the Australian fauna.

Three new genera and five new species of epialtid majoid crabs are described from deep water in the western Pacific. Two new species of Oxypleurodon Miers, 1886: O. sanctaeclausi n. sp. and O. annulatum n. sp. are described from the Philippines. New specimens of the rare Oxypleurodon carbunculum (Rathbun, 1906) from the Hawaiian Islands are also recorded. Three new genera are established: Garthinia n. gen. for G. disica n. sp. from the Solomon Islands; Guinotinia n. gen. for G. cordis n. sp. from New Caledonia and G. lehouarnoi n. sp. from Fiji and Tonga; and Laubierinia n. gen. for Sphenocarcinus nodosus Rathbun, 1916, and Rochinia carinata Griffin & Tranter, 1986.

Ten new endemic species are described from Anatolia: Astragalus chamberlainianus H. Sümbül, Astragalus citriniflorus H. Sümbül, Astragalus anamurensis H. Sümbül, Astragalus turcicus H. Sümbül (Fabaceae), Cephalaria peshmenii H. Sümbül, Cephalaria gazipashensis H. Sümbül (Dipsacaceae), Scorzonera longiana H. Sümbül (Asteraceae), Alkaima angustifolia H. Sümbül, Alkanna milliana H. Sümbül, Alkanna dumanii H. Sümbül (Boraginaceae). The following two taxa are recorded from Turkey for the first time: Cirsium libanoticum DC. subsp. libanoticum. Euphorbia forsskalii (Boiss.) Gay.

Thirty-six species of various thecate hydroids occur in two recent, deep-water collections from off New Caledonia. Of these, nine are new, namely Solenoscyphus subtilis Galea, sp. nov., Hincksella immersa Galea, sp. nov., Synthecium rectangulatum Galea, sp. nov., Diphasia alternata Galea, sp. nov., Dynamena opposita Galea, sp. nov., Hydrallmania clavaformis Galea, sp. nov., Symplectoscyphus acutustriatus Galea, sp. nov., Symplectoscyphus elongatulus Galea, sp. nov. and Zygophylax niger Galea, sp. nov. The male and female gonothecae of Caledoniana decussata Galea, 2015, the female gonothecae of Caledoniana microgona Galea, 2015, as well as the gonothecae of both sexes of Solenoscyphus striatus Galea, 2015 are described for the first time. The systematic position of the genera Solenoscyphus Galea, 2015 and Caledoniana Galea, 2015 is discussed on both morphological and molecular grounds, and both are confidently placed within the family Staurothecidae Maronna et al., 2016. In light of the molecular data, the genera Billardia Totton, 1930 and Dictyocladium Allman, 1888 are assigned to the families Syntheciidae Marktanner-Turneretscher, 1890 and Symplectoscyphidae Maronna et al. , 2016, respectively. The previously undescribed gonothecae of Hincksella neocaledonica Galea, 2015, and the male gonothecae of Sertularella tronconica Galea, 2016, were found. Thyroscyphus scorpioides Vervoort, 1993, a peculiar hydroid with putative stem nematothecae, is redescribed and assigned to the new genus Tuberocaulus Galea, gen. nov. Noteworthy new records from the study area are: Tasmanaria edentula (Bale, 1924), Hincksella sibogae Billard, 1918, Dictyocladium reticulatum (Kirchenpauer, 1884), Salacia sinuosa (Bale, 1888) and Billardia hyalina Vervoort & Watson, 2003. Most species are illustrated to facilitate their identification, and the morphology of the new ones is compared to that of their related congeners.

Monthly samples of algae collected in eighteen sites of springs and streams through September-2019 till August-2020during morning till afternoon in Shaqlawa district within Erbil Province, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Eleven various kinds of algae were identified for first time in Iraqi inland water, distributed to three genera of blue-green algae, which include Marssoniella elegans, Pseudoanabaena catenata,Cyanotheca aeroginosa,also in Pyrrophyta identified four new species genera include Gymnodium inversum, Woloszynskia tenuissima, Peridinium goslaviense, Hemidinium naustumandXanthopyta recorded three species were Ophiocytium arbuscula, Ophiocytium parvulum, Tetraedriella polychloriswhile Cryptophyta only have one species was Cryptomonas reflex. According to physicals and chemicals characteristics, water temperature varied from 14.942oC to 18.475oC, pH lies on alkaline side of neutrality, electrical conductivity ranged between (627.472-2092.306s/cm) and high concentration of salinity recorded in Azarian spring, higher value of calcium and magnesium recorded in Azarian and Benwan springs were 294.84 mg/L and 106.578 mg/L respectively. Lower value of nitrate and phosphate reported in Sard and Piawan springs, while lower value of sulfate observed in Prenga spring.

Twenty species of shallow-water poecilosclerid demosponges are described from the lagoon and reefs of New Caledonia, including thirteen new species and six new locality records, belonging to five families and eight genera {Myxillidae (1, Acarnus), Desmacellidae (1, Neofibularia), Crellidae (1, Crella), Microcionidae 113, Clathria (Clathriopsamma), C. (Clathria), C. (Thalysias), Echinochalina (Echinochalina), E. (Protophlitaspongia)] and Raspailiidae [4 species, Raspailia (Raspailia), Ceratopsion, Aulospongus]}. The shallow-water fauna contained a mixture of endemic species (65%) and those with affinities to both northern and southern Australia, in contrast to the deeper-water fauna which was previously found to have high endemism (70%) and ancestral affinities to northern New Zealand. The non-endemic shallow-water fauna represents the easternmost extent of species' distributions in the Indo-west Pacific, and the endemic component was also usually immediately recognisable as (transformed) sister-species from Australian tropical and temperate provinces.

This report supplements an earlier account on the hydroids of the Guadeloupe archipelago, and records 31 additional species of thecates. Among them, Halecium calderi sp. nov., Antennella armata sp. nov., and Antennella incerta sp. nov., are described. Laomedea tottoni Leloup, 1935 is redescribed and reassigned to the genus Clytia Lamouroux, 1812. Its synonymy is broadened upon inclusion of Clytia laxa Fraser, 1937. Hebella venusta (Allman, 1877) is considered valid based on comparison with related species, and its gonotheca is described for the first time. Two sympatric varieties of Sertularella diaphana (Allman, 1885), easily separable morphologically and by their cnidome composition, are discussed. Sertularella ornata Fraser, 1937 is recorded for the second time and is fully redescribed. Its name is actually a junior synonym of S. fusiformis (Hincks, 1861) f. ornata Broch, 1933, and it is here referred to as S. fraseri nom. nov. Sertularia thecocarpa Jarvis, 1922, Sertularella minuscula Billard, 1924, Sertularella parvula Mammen, 1965, and Sertularia stechowi Hirohito, 1995 are placed in the synonymy of Sertularella tongensis Stechow, 1919, the latter being transferred to the genus Sertularia Linnaeus, 1758. Sertularia ephemera nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for Sertularia tongensis Stechow, 1919. Aglaophenia postdentata Billard, 1913 is confidently recorded from the Atlantic for the first time. Dentitheca dendritica (Nutting, 1900) is redescribed, and additional notes on Macrorhynchia clarkei (Nutting, 1900) are provided. All the species discussed herein are new records for the study area. Illustrations are given for each species and data on the nematocyst complement and size of capsules are given when necessary. The number of hydroid species reported from the study area is raised to more than eighty. Hydroids of the Caribbean are moderately well known faunistically, though continuous discovery of new species is likely, the species composition being certainly richer than currently reported.

One genus and four species of Xantholinini are described as new: <em>Kamilaroius</em> <em>serpens</em> gen. n., sp. n. and <em>Andelis</em> <em>australis</em> sp. n. from Australia; <em>Zeteotomus</em> <em>caledonicus</em> sp. n. from New Caledonia, and <em>Wangareiella</em> <em>suborbata</em> sp. n. from New Zealand. The male genitalia of <em>Australinus megacephalus</em> (Lea) are figured for the first time. New records of other species of Xantholinini from the Australasian region are listed.

The previously monotypic genus Tritonus Mulsant is revised. Six new species are described from Madagascar, from which the genus is also recorded for the first time: T. complanatus sp.n., T. crenulatus sp.n., T. madagascarensis sp.n., T. riambavy sp.n., T. riana, sp.n., and T. steineri sp.n. New records for the previously described and Mauritian-endemic species Tritonus cribratus (Mulsant) are given. All known species occur in hygropetric habitats, consistent with the biology of other members of the Oocyclus-genus group of the tribe Laccobiini to which Tritonus belongs. A key to species, aedeagal illustrations, and scanning electron micrographs of diagnostic characters are provided.


Of the 30 000 and more specimens of land invertebrates collected by the expedition, studies on five groups, the Oligochaeta, Isoptera, Dermaptera, Hemiptera-Heteroptera and Rhopalocera, are sufficiently advanced to use them as indications of what may be learnt from the collection as a whole. We increased the number of known species there by from 30 % to over 100 % according to group, this increase being composed of approximately equal numbers of new species and new records. Our recovery of already recorded species was about 50 %. Endemic species make about a third of the total. There are few genera. The rest of the species usually occur in more than one other nearby area. This is very similar to the Samoan and Tongan picture. There is little ‘explosive speciation’ and few unique relationships with Australia and New Caledonia. A series of tables are provided to illustrate these conclusions.

We redescribe and illustrate Halcurias pilatus McMurrich, 1893 and H. mcmurrichi Uchida, 2004 (Endocoelantheae, Halcuriidae) from newly collected specimens from Southern Chile and deep-water reefs off Florida, respectively. Halcurias pilatus was previously considered to have a disjunct distribution until Uchida (2004) described a new species for the material from the Bahamas. However, the description of H. mcmurrichi does not meet modern taxonomic standards. We provide new anatomical and cnidae data for H. pilatus and H. mcmurrichi. Both species differ in the distribution and cnidom of nematocyst batteries in the column, development of microcnemes mesenteries, cnidae and geographical distribution. We find that H. pilatus can have a weak mesogleal marginal sphincter and amend accordingly the diagnoses of the genus Halcurias, family Halcuriidae, and suborder Endocoelantheae. These new records represent the first time both species have been collected since their original descriptions.
