The assessment of fishery resources is key to the development of management strategies for exploited stocks. Analysis of specific parameters provides information regarding the state of the stock and indicators of exploitation levels. The aim of the present study was to analyse the growth and mortality parameters, as well as investigate the exploitation status, of Panulirus meripurpuratus caught on the Amazon coast, northern Brazil. Growth parameters and stock assessment were estimated using R with bootstrapping and FISAT II, based on cephalothorax length–distribution frequency. Specimens were collected by the commercial lobster fishery off the coast of the states of Pará and Amapá between 2001 and 2002. The results indicate that the P. meripurpuratus stock assessed is composed of individuals with low growth rates and high estimates of maximum asymptotic length, with relative longevity of 21.37 years. The exploitation rate was operating at near the maximum limit of sustainability in 2001 and 2002. This is the first estimate of the exploitation status of P. meripurpuratus on the Amazon coast. We strongly recommend new monitoring efforts and further studies to support the conservation and management of the spiny lobster stock.

Research on the length distribution and population parameters of scalloped spiny lobster conducted in the Aceh Barat waters during April to November 2013. The aim of this study was to assess lobster fishery status in this waters from the point of view their length size and population parameters. Sampel collected randomly in the lobster landing site. Distribution of carapace length frequency was tabulated and analysed using logistic curve method. Length composition of male lobster was dominated under 72,5 mm midlenght, while female lobster was dominated above 72,5 mm midlength. This study found that the scalloped spiny lobster was caught before their reach the size of maturity (Lc = 65,8 mm < Lm = 76,8 mm). The peak season of spawning was indicated on May and August. Asimtotic length (CL∞) of scalloped spiny lobster was 119,5 mm with the growth rate (K) 0,39/year, total mortality (Z) 1,44/year, natural mortality (M) 0,67/year, and fishing mortality (F) 0,77/year. Exploitation rate was leading to the overfishing condition (E=0,54). Thus, it is needed to manage the lobster fishery in this area to gain the sustainability. We suggest that closing system season should be applied, especially in the peak spawning season.

Several data-poor stock assessment methods have recently been proposed and applied to data-poor fisheries around the world. The Mauritanian pink spiny lobster fishery has a long history of boom and bust dynamics, with large landings, stock collapse, and years-long fishery closures, all happening several times. In this study, we have used catch, fishing efforts, and length-frequency data (LFD) obtained from the fishery in its most recent period of activity, 2015–2019, and historical annual catch records starting in 2006 to fit three data-poor stock assessment methods. These were the length-based Bayesian (LBB) method, which uses LFD exclusively, the Catch-only MSY (CMSY) method, using annual catch data and assumptions about stock resilience, and generalised depletion models in the R package CatDyn combined with Pella-Tomlinson biomass dynamics in a hierarchical inference framework. All three methods presented the stock as overfished. The LBB method produced results that were very pessimistic about stock status but whose reliability was affected by non-constant recruitment. The CMSY method and the hierarchical combination of depletion and Pella-Tomlinson biomass dynamics produced more comparable results, such as similar sustainable harvest rates, but both were affected by large statistical uncertainty. Pella-Tomlinson dynamics in particular demonstrated stock experiencing wide fluctuations in abundance. In spite of uncertain estimates, a clear understanding of the status of the stock as overfished and in need of a biomass rebuilding program emerged as management-useful guidance to steer exploitation of this economically significant resource into sustainability.

The spiny lobsterPanulirus argus(Latreille, 1804) is the most important commercial fishing resource in the western central Atlantic and Brazil. Field studies covering the waters off southwestern Cuba and northern Brazil have improved our understanding of the variations in the reproductive potential (number of eggs), stock recruitment and reproductive efficiency of spiny lobsters according to location, depth and size class. Using the spawner-recruitment model, the reproductive potential index was correlated with the index of subsequent recruitment based on field sampling. Spiny lobster habitats in deeper waters need special attention in order to protect the species from overfishing of the recruitment. Considering the longevity and absence of reproductive senility in spiny lobsters, management strategies should ideally include the creation of spawner sanctuaries (marine protected areas) capable of restoring and maintaining the biomass of the spawning stock and the establishment of a maximum catch size of 135 mm (CL) for both sexes along the entire Brazilian coast. Based on our findings, we propose to establish spiny lobster sanctuaries (50-100 m) on the continental shelf off northern Brazil, from Amapá (5°25′N 51°0′W) to the western reaches of the coast of Pará (1°11′N 46°27′W, 0°42′N 46°45′W), covering a total surface area of 64 230 km2.

Determination of exploitation rate is considered important for both stock assessment and establishment of fishery reference points. From 1992 to 1996, a project was undertaken to evaluate the change-in-ratio technique for estimating exploitation rates for male lobsters off southern Tasmania. Confidence limits of exploitation rate estimates were determined by bootstrap analysis. This showed wide confidence intervals around the estimates for the fishing years from 1992–93 to 1994–95. Bootstrap analysis was used to determine the appropriate sample size (number of pot-lifts) for improved precision in exploitation rate estimates for the 1995–96 fishing year. Results from field estimates confirm the expected decrease in confidence intervals. The level of exploitation had an inverse relationship to the precision of exploitation rate estimates. Relationships can be determined between the level of exploitation in the fishery and the degree of precision achievable for a set number of pot-lifts. Thus, sampling programmes can be designed to minimize cost and provide the degree of precision required for management strategies.

Growth parameters are an important component for the stock assessment of exploited aquatic species. However, it is often difficult to apply direct methods to estimate growth and to analyse the differences between males and females, particularly in tropical areas. The objective of this study was to analyse the inter-cohort growth of three tropical resources and discuss the possible fisheries management implications. A simple method was used to compare individual growth curves obtained from length frequency distribution analysis, illustrated by case studies of three tropical species from different aquatic environments: tilapia (<em>Oreochromis aureus</em>), red octopus (<em>Octopus maya</em>) and the Caribbean spiny lobster (<em>Panulirus argus</em>). The analysis undertaken compared the size distribution of males and females of a given cohort through modal progression analysis. The technique used proved to be useful for highlighting the differences in growth between females and males of a specific cohort. The potential effect of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on the organism’s development as reflected in the size distribution of the cohorts is discussed.

The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, is quite abundant in the Gulf of Gabes, off the south-eastern coast of Tunisia. It is commercially exploited by artisanal gears and trawlers all year round, and by purse seine nets from May to August (bluefish fishery season). Catches of bluefish, in the period 1996–2004 fluctuated between 365.6 t and 1240.1 t with an annual average of 805 t. This fluctuation, partially due to the migratory nature of the species, could be also attributed to the fleet activities that sometimes changed at the mercy of the operators. The analysis of the virtual population of bluefish in the Gulf of Gabes showed that, in 2002, the stock that had just recovered rightly after an excessive fishing in 1996–1997 was again subject to a fishing effort that passed its capacity (E=0.71; E>0.5). The biomass (B) estimated to be ~2178.9 t only tolerated the extraction of 713.4 t (more or less one-third of B). However, the three fleets in use removed 1029.1 t with a yield per recruit (Y/R) of 70.5 g. As a result of this over-fishing, the actual stock of bluefish in the Gulf of Gabes was characterized by individuals having a mean total length of 17.88 cm, a size which is much lower than the one at first sexual maturity (23.5 cm). The turnover (D/B) being of 75.23%, it did not allow the reconstitution of the stock. The total removals (~1639 t) due to both natural mortality (M=0.28) and fishing mortality (F=0.675) had to be compensated especially by individual growth (1534.2 t; 93.6%) because of the low weight of the recruits.

Population dynamics is an important aspect as basic of fisheries management and little information of this aspect for spiny lobster fishery in Pelabuhanratu waters. This research aims to evaluate of growth aspects, recruitment pattern, mortality, and exploitation rate of scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) in Palabuhanratu waters. This research was conducted in June 2015 until May 2016 using census method. The size of P. homarus captured using bottom gill-net with total sample 483 specimen was between 28-100 mm carapace lengths (CL). Linear regression showed that growth pattern was negative allometric. The growth coefficient of male (K = 0.29 per year) was found smaller than female (K = 0.40 per year) based on ELEFAN I (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) method. Recruitment seems to be accrued twice peaks a year (February to May and September to October) and the highest was at February to May. Fishing mortality (F) reached 1.9 to 2.2 times of natural mortality (M). The LcÂLr value showed that female has been caught before reached the average size of bearing eggs or reproductive maturity size. The exploitation rate of spiny lobsters reaches 32-38% above optimum level. This study suggests that the spiny lobster fishery in Palabuhanratu in the state of overexploitation.
