Further studies of plankton ecosystems in the eastern Indian Ocean. V. Ecology of the Copepoda

Seasonal changes in 82 species of epiplanktonic copepods along a longitudinal section in the eastern Indian Ocean (meridian 110°) were studied so that the main structural features of the pelagic ecosystem could be identified. Counts were made of 46 species of Eucalanidae, Euchaetidae, and Sapphirinidae, and the presence or absence of the remainder was recorded. This mixture of qualitative and quantitative data was used to identify the major niche complexes ('biocenoses') and habitat complexes (geocenoses') in the study area. Many species were ubiquitous. The greatest proportion of endemic species occurred in a narrow fringe to the south of Java; these included neritic species such as Acartia erythraea and Eucalanus dentatus, upwelling species such as Calanoides carinatus, and other species of less certain origin (e.g. Eucalanus crassus, Euchaeta concinna, and Candacia catula). The best indicator of tropical water was Candacia pachydactyla, and the best indicator of its mixtures with subtropical water was Euchneta wolfendeni. Whereas presence-absence data were sufficient to group many tropical species which had a limited range, numerical data were needed to classify subtropical species such as Eucalanus subtenuis, Euchaeta longicornis, and Copilia mediterranea. Diurnally separate, as well as seasonally separate, biocenoses could be recognized; these were characterized, in particular, by species of the genus Pleuromamma. The agglomerative program MULTCLAS, using quantitative as well as qualitative data, defined plankton geocenoses more clearly than did the simple divisive program DIVINF using qualitative (presence-absence) data alone. Six systems could be recognized. Their latitudinal and seasonal distribution, and their temperature-salinity properties showed that two were tropical, two were subtropical, and two were tropical-subtropical mixtures. The tropical geocenoses were early and late phases of the 'Java Dome', a south-east monsoon upwelling system. The subtropical geocenoses corresponded to the central water mass and the west wind drift transition zone. The tropical-subtropical mixtures were seasonal phases, the south-east monsoon phase being generally richer than its successor, due probably to lateral advection from the north, possibly from coastal upwelling off the north-west Australian shelf. The west wind drift transition zone had unusual biological properties due, apparently, to its characteristic turbulence and deep mixed layer. Using the scaled exponent of the Shannon-Wiener entropy function H, a diversity maximum was located at about 20�S. in the tropical convergence. Eucalanus subtenuis was responsible for diversity minima in the subtropics. A variety of species was responsible for diversity minima in the tropics, in particular Rhincalanus cornutus and Euchaeta russelli, the latter swarming in the upper layers in midsummer and reducing diversity to practically zero.

The part of Belúchistán now under Persian rule is bounded upon the north by Seistán, upon the east by Panjgúr and Kej, upon the south by the Indian Ocean, and upon the west by Núrámshír, Rúdbár, and the Báshákerd mountains.This country enjoys a variety of climates; almost unbearable heat exists on the Mekrán coast, we find a temperate climate on the hill slopes and on the slightly raised plains as at Duzek and Bampúr, and a cool climate in the mountainous districts Serhad and Bazmán. The heat at Jálq is said to be so intense in summer that the gazelles lie down exhausted in the plains, and let themselves be taken by the people without any trouble.

The decision to return from the Moluccas to the west was what turned the expedition to the Spice into the first trip around the world. Returning through the Cape of Good Hope contravened the orders received by the expedition members because they invaded the Portuguese territory established by the Treaty of Tordesillas. The main motivations were three: a) to leave as soon as possible to Seville to report that they had discovered a passage to the South Sea and that it was possible to reach the Moluccas through Castilian territory; b) avoid being captured by the Portuguese, and c) the monsoon that was blowing at that time from the NE, making it difficult for them to return through America and the North Indian Ocean. The return to the west was agreed by all expedition members but Elcano's decision was decisive to return along this route, face the hardships they suffered and go around the world.

Malayalam is the language of the south-west of the Madras Presidency. It is the third most important language of the Presidency, the first and the second being Tamil and Telugu respectively. It is spoken in Malabar, Cochin, and Travancore. Out of a total of 5,932,207 inhabitants of these parts, 5,409,350 persons are those who speak Malayalam. These countries, taken as a whole, are bounded on the north, by South Canara, on the east by the far-famed Malaya range of mountains, on the south by the Indian Ocean, and on the west by the Arabian Sea.

Geopotential topographies of the surface and several subsurface depths are drawn from the observations on three cruises of H.M.A.S. Diamantina in the waters to the west and south of Australia in 1959 and 1960. The associated circulation is discussed. Surface circulation is found to be in general agreement with the observed surface currents. The subsurface flow between 300 and 1200 m depth indicates an entry of water from the south across 32� S. which turns to the west south of 20� S. Transports in certain current systems and eddies are calculated. The importance of internal waves in the south-west of the region, having amplitudes of more than 100 m, is discussed.

Gitksan (git) is an Interior Tsimshianic language spoken in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is closely related to Nisga'a, and more distantly related to Coast Tsimshian and Southern Tsimshian. The specific dialect of Gitksan presented here is what can be called Eastern Gitksan, spoken in the villages of Kispiox (Ansbayaxw), Glen Vowell (Sigit'ox), and Hazelton (Git-an'maaxs), which contrasts with the Western dialects, spoken in the villages of Kitwanga (Gitwingax), Gitanyow (Git-anyaaw), and Kitseguecla (Gijigyukwhla). The primary phonological differences between the dialects are a lexical shift in vowels and the presence of stop lenition in the Eastern dialects. While there exists a dialect continuum, the primary cultural and political distinction drawn is between Eastern and Western Gitksan. For reference, Gitksan is bordered on the west by Nisga'a, in the south by Coast Tsimshian and Witsuwit'en, in the east by Dakelh and Sekani, and in the north by Tahltan (the latter four of these being Athabaskan languages).

Till 1948 the coherent record of farming in Northern Europe began with the neolithic culture represented in the Danish dysser (‘dolmens’) and most readily defined by the funnel-necked beakers, collared flasks and ‘amphorae’ found therein. As early as 1910 Gustav Kossinna had remarked that these distinctive ceramic types, and accordingly the culture they defined, were not confined to the West Baltic coastlands, but recurred in the valleys of the Upper Vistula and Oder to the east, to the south as far as the Upper Elbe and in northwest Germany and Holland too. He saw in this distribution evidence for the first expansion of Urindogermanen from their cradle in the Cimbrian peninsula. In the sequel Åberg filled in the documentation of this expansion with fresh spots on the distribution map and Kossinna himself distinguished typologically four main provinces or geographical groups—the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western. Finally Jazdrzewski gave a standard account of the whole content of what had come to be called Kultura puharów lejkowatych, Trichterbecherkultur, or Tragtbaegerkulturen. As ‘Funnel-necked-beaker culture’ is a clumsy expression and English terminology is already overloaded with ‘beakers’, I shall use the term ‘First Northern’.The orgin of this vigorous and expansive group of cultivators and herdsmen has always been an enigma. Not even Kossinna imagined that the savages of the Ertebølle shell-mounds spontaneously began cultivating cereals and breeding sheep in Denmark. As dysser were regarded as megalithic tombs and as megaliths are Atlantic phenomena, he supposed that the bases of the neolithic economy were introduced from the West together with the ‘megalithic idea’. But the First Northern Farmers of the South and East groups did not build megalithic tombs. Moreover, in the last ten years an extension of the North group across southern Sweden as far as Södermannland has come to light, and these farmers too, though they used collared flasks and funnel-necked beakers, built no dolmens either. In any case there was nothing Western about the pottery from the Danish dysser, and Western types of arrow-head are conspicuously rare in Denmark.

Portuguese Nyasaland is the name given to the most northern part of Portuguese East Africa, lying between Lake Nyasa and the Indian Ocean. It is separated from the Tanganyika territory in the north by the River Rovuma and from the Portuguese province of Mozambique in the south by the River Lurio. The territory measures about 400 miles from east to west and 200 miles from north to south and has an area of nearly 90,000 square miles. This territory is now perhaps the least known part of the once Dark Continent, but while the writer was actually engaged in the exploration of this country in 1920–1, the Naval Intelligence Division of the British Admiralty published two handbooks, the Manual of Portuguese East Africa and the Handbook of Portuguese Nyasaland, which with their extensive bibliographies contained practically everything that was known of that country up to that date (1920). These handbooks make it unnecessary in this paper to give detailed accounts of the work of previous explorers.

The distribution of Mesolithic sites in Wales is controlled to a great extent by the terrain, for physiographically, Wales is a highland block defined on three sides by the sea and for the greater part of the fourth side by a sharp break of slope. Geologically the Principality is composed almost entirely of Palaeozoic rocks, of which the 600-foot contour encloses more than three quarters of the total area. There are extensive regions above 1,500 feet and 2,000 feet and in the north the peaks of Snowdonia and Cader Idris rise to 3,560 feet and 2,929 feet respectively. Indeed North Wales consists of an inhospitable highland massif, skirted by a lowland plateau and cut deeply by river valleys, providing only limited areas for settlement. The hills and mountains of Snowdonia with their extension at lower altitudes into the Lleyn Peninsula, and the ranges of Moelwyn, Manod Mawr, Arenig Fach and Cader Idris, are discouraging obstacles to penetration, save for a short distance along the river valleys. To the east of these peaks are extensive tracts of upland plateau dissected by rivers, bounded on the west by the vale of the river Conway and cleft by the Vale of Clwyd. To the east of this valley lies the Clwydian Range and further again to the east these uplands descend with milder contours to the Cheshire and Shropshire plains.To the south the district merges into the uplands of Central Wales, which are continuous until they are replaced by the lowland belt of South Wales.

In view of the importance of a pure milk supply, we considered that it might be of interest to examine chemically, microscopically, and bacteriologically, a number of specimens of milk coming into the Metropolis for which purpose we decided to select samples from the various counties, the milk of which is consigned to London. We found that milk so consigned comes from about twenty-six counties extending from Derby in the North, to Hampshire and Devonshire in the South and South-West, and from Hereford in the West, to Norfolk in the East.
