Reproductive cycles of the bivalva molluscs Atactodea striata (Gmelin), Gafarium tumidum Roding and Anadara scapha (L.) in New Caledonia

Monthly samples of the bivalves Atactodea striata, Gafrariurn turnidum and Anadara scapha were collected over 1 year from the littoral zone on the south-western coast of New Caledonia. A. striata and G. turnidum were studied by macroscopic examination of gonads and microscopic examination of gamete smears. For A. scapha, only microscopic examination was used. A. striata and G. turnidum are dioecious, whereas A. scapha is a protandric hermaphrodite. Sexual differentiation begins at a shell length of 20 mm for A. striata and G. turnidum and 22 mm for A. scapha. The three species have an extended or continuous breeding period, although, in all three, sexual activity peaks in the hot season.

Abstract An improved method has been developed for canned whole and cream style corn to replace 40.104. The proposed method is unique because the microscopic and macroscopic examinations can be conducted almost concurrently; in the official method the macroscopic examination is dependent upon completion of the microscopic examination. The proposed method is shorter and it eliminates the use of viscous castor oil by specifying extraction in a percolator with paraffin oil from hot 40% isopropanol. Glassware is easily cleaned up after percolator cycles with isopropanol and water rinses. The proposed method yielded improved recoveries of insect and rodent filth spike elements. The method has been adopted as official first action.

Sarcosporidiosis is a parasitic disease due to the development of cystogenic coccidia of the genus Sarcocystis with dixene evolution and muscular localization, which can cause losses in cattle and generate an intestinal infection in domestic carnivores (dog, cat) and humans. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp on 149 bovine carcasses at the Eucalyptus slaughterhouse in Algiers by macroscopic and microscopic examination and to evaluate the influence of certain risk factors (age, sex, breed and origin). Samples of esophagus and diaphragms were taken from slaughtered cattle and analyzed by enzymatic (pepsin) digestion and histological technique. The macroscopic examination was negative during carcasses inspection while the microscopic examination showed a prevalence of 100% for enzymatic digestion by revealing bradyzoites in the form of bananas and 47.7% at the histology with the detection of thin-walled cysts of S. cruzi (98.6%), of thick-walled cysts of S. hominis (15.5%) which was the zoonotic species and of S. hirsuta (1.39%). The risk factors studied significantly influenced the prevalence of Sarcocystis sp. This study revealed for the first time in the diaphragm a cyst of Sarcocystis hirsuta.

The fauna is composed of 16 species</p><p align="left">and forms of chironomid larvae, comprising 10</p><p align="left">communities. It has been found that the</p><p align="left">communities are characterized by rather poor</p><p align="left">species diversity; Shannon’s index varies from</p><p align="left">0.7 to 2.1 bit. Their distribution is affected by</p><p align="left">hydro-lithodynamic conditions, type of bottom</p><p align="left">sediments and macrophyte development. The</p><p align="left">peak of maximal biomass of chironomid larvae</p><p align="left">on the facies of non-rounded rock debris near</p><p>Berezovy Cape is recorded in spring.</p></span></span>

This study reports on 25 species of hydroids occurring in the collections gathered during KANACONO and KANADEEP expeditions carried out in the SE of New Caledonia in 2016, and off the western coast of the island in 2017, respectively. Of these, 19 have not been dealt with in earlier reports on these collections. Two new genera and four new species are described, viz, Actinopluma mirifica Galea gen. et sp. nov., provisionally assigned to the family Kirchenpaueriidae Stechow, 1921, Schizoplumularia helicoidalis sp. nov., belonging to the Plumulariidae McCrady, 1859, and Corhiza patula Galea sp. nov. and Thamnopteros uniserius Galea gen. et sp. nov., both placed in the family Halopterididae Millard, 1962. The gonotheca and the medusoid gonophore of Plumularia contraria Ansín Agís et al., 2014 are described for the first time, allowing a genus transfer to Dentitheca Stechow, 1919, as D. contraria comb. nov. Plumularia conjuncta Billard, 1913, known earlier from a minute portion of colony, is redescribed based on a complete, though infertile, specimen. Similarly, complete specimens corresponding to the hydroid previously referred to as Antennella megatheca Ansín Agís et al., 2009 are documented, allowing a provisional reallocation to Corhiza Millard, 1962 and a description of its so far unknown gonothecae. Fertile material assignable to the poorly-known Monostaechas fisheri Nutting, 1905 allows the recognition of this hydroid as a valid species, distinct from M. quadridens (McCrady, 1859). Most taxa are illustrated to validate the reliability of their identifications. Finally, phylogenetic reconstructions of the families Aglaopheniidae, Plumulariidae, and Halopterididae, based on the 16S rRNA, allowed a first genetic characterization of some of the species dealt with in this work.

This study aimed to explain the case of ectoparasite infection and the life cycle of parasites in turtledoves (Geopelia striata). Sarcoptes sp. one of the ectoparasites belonging to the phylum Arthropods, the Arachnid class, and the order Acarina.Sarcoptes sp. can infect the skin of the host through direct contact with infected animals and the environment. Sarcoptes sp. infects by forming a lump under the skin and severe infection causes a crust to form on the skin and is accompanied by itching. Physical examination was carried out by means of inspection of the infected skin area. Subsequent examinations were carried out on the dead skin cells mixed with fresh manure macroscopically and microscopically. Macroscopic examination was done by observing the condition of the skin that is discraped. Microscopic examination using native examination. Based on the negative examination, it was found that there were Sarcoptes sp. mites on an objective microscope with a 40x magnification. Geopelia striata can be infected with Sarcoptes sp. through direct contact with sick animals. The incubation period of Sarcoptes sp. after infection from infected animals was 3-6 weeks.

Histomonas meleagridis (Trichomonadida; Moncercomonadidae), an effective protozoan causing the disease known as "Karabaş Hastalığı" in Turkey. This parasite, which has a cosmopolitan spread in the world, is manifesting deaths of up to 100% in young turkeys. It is also found in chickens, partridge, quail, duck, pheasant and Guinea fowl. A cecum of a 60-day old American bronze turkey was sent to our laboratory for examination from a local turkey carer in Van. In the macroscopic examination, ıt was seen that there was engorged cecum. Giemsa stained smears were prepared from these focal and examined microscopically. As a result of the examination, several flagellated form ranging from 8 to 15 µm were detected. Histomoniasis was diagnosed by considering the anemnesis obtained from the owner, engorged detected in the cecum and flagellated forms seen in the microscopic examination.

A revised classification of the Holothyridae is presented. The family is restricted to archipelagoes from Melanesia to the Seychelles, with no known records from any continent. Evolution of holothyrid characters, phylogenetic relationships of the eight holothyrid genera and criteria for taxonomic categories in Holothyridae are discussed.Holothyrus braueri Thon, 1905, from the Seychelle Islands, is selected as the type species of a new genus, Sternothyrus. A new genus, Lindothyrus, is created for L. rubellus, sp. nov., from the western coast of New Caledonia, and L. elongatus, sp. nov., from Lord Howe Island, Australia. Indothyrus greeni, gen. et sp. nov., is described from Sri Lanka. Hammenius (Leiothyrus) Hammen, 1983 is raised to generic rank and Holothyrus nitidissimus Thorell, 1882 from the Fly River, and H. armatus Canestrini from Tamara Island (Aitape), both New Guinea, are included in this genus. The two previously known New Guinean genera, Thonius Lehtinen, 1981 and Hammenius Lehtinen, 1981, are redefined and relimited, and their type species are redescribed. Five new holothyrid taxa are described from New Guinea: Thonius mendi from the Strickland River, T. berlesei from an unknown locality, Hammenius fujuge iora from the Central district, Oro Province, H. grandjeani gressitti from Mt Bosavi, and H. insularis from the Louisiade Archipelago. Holothyrus Gervais, 1842 is restricted to two species from Mauritius only. A new genus, Haplothyrus, is created for the New Caledonian species H. expolitissimus Berlese, 1924 and for H. hyatti, sp. nov., from an unknown locality. Haplothyrus is characterised by the possession of a single female genital valve instead of four valves, as in all other genera of this suborder. The poorly described Seychellian species with no preserved material could not be revised.

ABSTRACT Common in Vanuatu, the Dwarf Sea Krait Laticauda frontalis also is known from five old records (in the 1880s and 1890s) from the Loyalty Islands, between Vanuatu and the main island of New Caledonia. Those records have been interpreted by some authorities as errors, or as reflecting occasional waifs rather than breeding populations. We now report an additional specimen of L. frontalis from the Loyalty Islands island of Maré, and we review distributional data for this species and for the closely allied L. saintgironsi. Sympatry on the western coast of Maré confirms that these two taxa warrant separate species status despite their minimal genetic divergence.

Selecting a name for the gold rush colony of British Columbia, although apparently trivial, embarrassed the government, threatened to become the focus for a groundswell of opposition to the whole idea of establishing a new colony, and offers a curious sidelight on the role of the Crown.On 24 June 1858 Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, the Colonial Secretary in Lord Derby's second ministry, wrote to the Queen to inform her that “in consequence of the recent discovery of Gold in the Neighbourhood of Fraser's River, on the Western Coast of British North America, rendering expedient the immediate establishment of Civil Government,” the government had decided “to erect at once a New Colony there.” Parliament had to authorize this, “& it is desirable that the name of the new Colony shall be inserted in the Bill.” Since the measure was to be introduced within a week, the procedure was slapdash. In asking the Queen to select a name, Lytton informed her that explorers had used the name “New Caledonia,” but did point out that the name had been used elsewhere, most notably for “the chief island of the New Hebrides Group in the South Seas where the French have lately signified their intention to form an establishment.” He added that the names New Cornwall and New Hanover had also been applied to parts of the coast by some mapmakers. While the monarch retained a significant role in mid-nineteenth century government, this hardly extended to, acting as a cartographical research institute for the Colonial Office. On 27 June the Queen informed her minister that she had settled on New Caledonia as the most generally accepted name.

Abstract Global climate models projections indicate no clear future rainfall changes over the Southwestern Pacific islands in response to anthropogenic forcing. Yet, these models have low (~ 100–200 km) spatial resolution and suffer from large systematic biases, such as the trademark “double ITCZ”. Here, 4 km-resolution simulations were used with a nested regional atmospheric model, which resolves the New Caledonian mountainous topography. The resulting present-day rainfall amount, spatial structure, seasonal cycle, and extremes compare much better with observations than at 20 km resolution. We applied projected changes from global climate models under the RCP8.5 scenario at the boundaries, following an approach that corrects both their present-day and projected sea surface temperature biases. Unlike climate models, our refined projections reveal an 18% decrease in annual mean rainfall over New Caledonia by 2080–2100, especially on the leeward side of the island (up to 30%) and during the hot season (that accounts for ~ 80% of the rainfall decrease). This drying is robust without bias correction, and much stronger than at ~ 20 km resolution. It is mainly driven by circulation changes. A weather regime classification further demonstrates that ~ 80% of the hot season drying relates to a strong anti-cyclonic and air subsidence anomalies centred on the north of NC, which reduces moisture convergence over the archipelago. The frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events is also reduced by ~ 20% by 2080–2100. This drastic projected drying would have dramatic impacts on water resources and terrestrial ecosystems, pleading for carefully-planned adaptation policies for New Caledonia.
