A selective discussion of electron attachment to molecules is presented with emphasis on recent studies of SF6, carried out with a novel laser photoelectron attachment (LPA) method in the energy range 0�1-170 me V with an effective energy resolution around 0�1 me V near threshold.

A new ultrahigh-energy-resolution and wide-energy-range soft X-ray beamline has been designed and is under construction at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The beamline has two branches: one dedicated to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and the other to photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). The two branches share the same plane-grating monochromator, which is equipped with four variable-line-spacing gratings and covers the 20–2000 eV energy range. Two elliptically polarized undulators are employed to provide photons with variable polarization, linear in every inclination and circular. The expected energy resolution is approximately 10 meV at 1000 eV with a flux of more than 3 × 1010 photons s−1at the ARPES sample positions. The refocusing of both branches is based on Kirkpatrick–Baez pairs. The expected spot sizes when using a 10 µm exit slit are 15 µm × 5 µm (horizontal × vertical FWHM) at the ARPES station and 10 µm × 5 µm (horizontal × vertical FWHM) at the PEEM station. The use of plane optical elements upstream of the exit slit, a variable-line-spacing grating and a pre-mirror in the monochromator that allows the influence of the thermal deformation to be eliminated are essential for achieving the ultrahigh-energy resolution.

The discovery and measurement of cosmic X-ray sources has almost invariably been performed with proportional counters which have large window areas. In the energy range from 1 to 50 keV, proportional counters have advantages over other types of detectors; they provide energy resolution and they can be made relatively easily with very large window areas.

The results of two crystal measurements of potassium acid phthalate crystal first order parallel position rocking curves, percent reflections, and reflection coefficients are presented. They cover the 4-24 Ǻ wavelength range and are typical of results with cleaved crystals illuminated over areas of one-half to two square inches. The energy resolution available with these crystals is shown to be nearly constant at about two-thirds of an electron volt over most of the energy range studied and the coefficient of reflection is also nearly constant at about 1 x 10-4 radians. A pronounced line-like reflectivity structure at 23.3 Ǻ is exhibited which is probably associated with oxygen atom K-shell absorption.

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts / ( keV kg yr ) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te > 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 ν β β decay with a resulting half-life of T 1 / 2 2 ν = [ 7.9 ± 0.1 ( stat . ) ± 0.2 ( syst . ) ] × 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

We have designed and tested a focusing X-ray telescope with an angular resolution (FWHM) of 1.0° for the study of extraterrestrial X-ray sources in the energy range 20–140 keV. The telescope's lens is an array of rock salt crystals (each of which is approximately one inch square), mounted on a 6-ft-diameter paraboloidal frame. The lens is located 9.5 ft above a 2-in.-diameter NaI crystal and PM tube (which measures the energy of the incident X ray). X rays passing through the salt crystals undergo a 2θ deflection if the Bragg condition for reflection, nλ = 2d sin θ, is approximately satisfied. Optimum thickness and effective energy bandwidths for such reflections have been determined for energies in the telescope's operating range. The area-efficiency product of the lens is approximately 8 times the NaI crystal area from 20 to 40 keV, giving a real improvement in the signal-to-background ratio. Crystals more nearly perfect than rock salt offer the possibility of increased gain over narrow energy intervals. Polarization measurements of the incident X rays may also be made.

Abstract– The interactions of low-energy electrons (<20 eV) with D-ribose molecules, namely, electron scattering and dissociative attachment, are studied. The results of these studies showed that the fragmentation of D-ribose molecules occurs effectively even at an electron energy close to zero. as well as in the energy range 5.50–9.50 eV. In the total cross section of electron scattering by molecules, resonance features at energies of 5.00–9.00 eV in the region of formation of ionic fragments C3H4O2–, C2H3O2–, OH–, associated with the destruction of molecular heterocycles, were experimentally discovered for the first time. The correlation of the features observed in the scattering and dissociative electron attachment cross sections is analyzed.
